...how dumb teachers can be

This should hit the Drudge

NC Teacher Screams at Student: It’s Criminal to Criticize Obama

A YouTube video uploaded on Monday afternoon apparently shows a schoolteacher from the Rowan-Salisbury school district in North Carolina informing a student that failing to be respectful of President Obama is a criminal offense. Breitbart News has uncovered that the student is a high school junior.

The video shows a classroom discussion about the Washington Post hit piece about Mitt Romney bullying a kid some five decades ago. One student says, “Didn’t Obama bully someone though?” The teacher says: “Not to my knowledge.” The student then cites the fact that Obama, in Dreams from My Father, admits to shoving a little girl. “Stop, no, because there is no comparison,” screams the teacher. Romney is “running for president. Obama is the president.”

The student responds that both are “just men.”

The teacher yells -- literally yells -- that Obama is “due the respect that every other president is due … Listen,” she continues, “let me tell you something, you will not disrespect the president of the United States in this classroom.” She yells over the student repeatedly, and yells at him that it's disrespect for him to even debate about Romney and Obama.

The student says that he can say what he wants.

“Not about him, you won’t,” says the teacher.

The teacher then tells the student – wrongly – that it is a criminal offense to say bad things about a president. “Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush? Do you realize you are not supposed to slander the president?”

The student says that it would violate First Amendment rights to jail someone for such sentiments. “You would have to say some pretty f’d up crap about him to be arrested,” says the student. “They cannot take away your right to have your opinion … They can’t take that away unless you threaten the president.”

Clearly, the student should be teaching the class, and the teacher should be reading the Constitution more often.

The school district classified the exchange – which is obviously just another case of a pro-Obama teacher shoveling her views down students’ throats – a “learning experience.” It isn’t. It’s political intimidation, and it’s just another example of how the American public school system has become an indoctrination tool for the left. This teacher should be suspended or fired forthwith, if only for incompetence.

UPDATE: Breitbart News has received information that the YouTube video was shot by a friend of the bullied student. According to our source, the student had asked his friend to record the discussion to "prove to his parents what he has been trying to tell them for some time. The teacher in this video has a long history of pushing a liberal agenda, by shouting down students. She is very intolerant of other points of view that she does not share. The atmosphere at this school is not very conducive to opposing views."

The source continues, "The student's parents have since taken him out of school and had him registered at another nearby school."

This kid wanted OUT OF THAT SCHOOL ..away from the leftists!

A local article on it...

Video stirs debate on teacher's actions in North class

After reviewing a video in which a North Rowan High School teacher tells a student he can be arrested for speaking ill of President Barack Obama, the Rowan-Salisbury School System said it can be a learning experience.

Meanwhile, an expert on politics at Catawba College says the social studies teacher just doesn’t have her facts straight when she insists speaking your mind about a president can get you charged with a criminal offense.

Although two students provided the name of the teacher, the Post is not publishing it because officials within the school system would not confirm her identity and she could not be reached for comment.
[How long will that secret last?]

The video captures audio of the dispute but does not show the teacher or anyone else. It appears to have been shot with a phone or other device as the camera pointed at the ceiling the entire time.

Rowan-Salisbury spokeswoman Rita Foil confirmed the teacher is still employed with the district and has not been suspended for disciplinary reasons. Foil emailed this statement to a Post reporter Friday on behalf of the school system:

“The Rowan-Salisbury School System expects all students and employees to be respectful in the school environment and for all teachers to maintain their professionalism in the classroom. This incident should serve as an education for all teachers to stop and reflect on their interaction with students.

“Due to personnel and student confidentiality, we cannot discuss the matter publicly.”

The nearly 10-minute video, shot by a student and uploaded to YouTube on Monday, had been viewed more than 1,000 times by Friday afternoon.

It begins with a classroom conversation about a recent news story detailing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney allegedly bullying a classmate in prep school. It turns into a heated, sometimes confrontational debate.

One student asks, “Didn’t Obama bully someone though?”

The teacher responds: “Not to my knowledge.”

In response to the Romney story, conservatives have recently been pointing to a passage in Obama’s book, “Dreams from My Father,” in which the president writes that while in grade school he shoved a little girl, the only other black student in his grade, after other students called him her boyfriend.

When the student tells the teacher that Obama admitted to bullying a girl in school, the teacher goes on the defensive.

“Stop, no, because there is no comparison,” she says. Romney, she says, is “running for president. Obama is the president.”

When the student says they’re both “just men,” the teacher continues to argue that Romney, as a candidate for president, is not to be afforded the same respect as the president.

The teacher tells the class Obama is “due the respect that every other president is due.”

“Listen, let me tell you something, you will not disrespect the president of the United States in this classroom,” she says.

The student replies that he’ll say what he wants.

“Not about him you won’t,” the teacher says.

Later in the conversation, the teacher tells the class it’s criminal to slander a president.

“Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush?” she says of former President Bush. “Do you realize you are not supposed to slander the president?”

The student responds by saying being arrested for talking badly about the president would violate the right to free speech.

“You would have to say some pretty f’d up crap about him to be arrested,” he says. “They cannot take away your right to have your opinion. ... They can’t take that away unless you threaten the president.”

Principal Darrel McDowell referred questions about the video to Foil.

Michael Bitzer, a political science professor at Catawba College and a widely known political analyst, weighed in on the video.

“I think what this broke down to was a perceived personal slight by an instructor against someone she sees in a positive view, and things just went out of control from there,” Bitzer said in an email to the Post.

Bitzer said he thinks the teacher did go a “bit overboard in being rude towards the student.”

“I think the student was also trying to pick a fight, honestly,” he said.

Bitzer said it appears the teacher’s attempt to make a point about showing respect for the office of the president gets overshadowed by her personal feelings for Obama.

“Her point about not being able to say anything ‘disrespectful’ about the president does fly in the face of the First Amendment, and while she may wish to enforce that edict about ‘respecting’ the president, the issue seems to have gotten personal on her part,” Bitzer wrote.

“Granted, she apparently tried to ensure that a respectful conversation was had about the president, but she seems to have taken things a bit too personally — and it appears the student was set on making a confrontation in the guise of raising a question about ‘who bullied who — both Romney and Obama?’ ”

Referencing former president George W. Bush, Richard Nixon and Abraham Lincoln, Bitzer said the fact that there are a lot of “mean, derogatory things said about our elected officials” is part of American history.

Bitzer said he has “no idea” what the teacher is talking about when she claims people were arrested for saying bad things about Bush.

“I have never heard of anyone arrested for saying derogatory things about George W. Bush , which I am assuming she is referring to,” he said. “Her belief that if one slanders the president is not very accurate — if you ‘threaten’ the president, that is another story, and that is a criminal offense.”

Searches on YouTube don’t bring up the video because it is classified as unlisted

That's what I'm talking about.

The Teachers hated on Bush at my kids' school - and then a wave of Patriotism hit and no one was allowed to say or write anything the least bit critical of Obama.

There were crowds of black kids wearing T-shirts that said - "My Black President" on them at school when I picked up my kids.

No one is going to tell me this woman is the exception.

What does this tell you about the public school system in NC, it tells me they have incompetant teachers, when students seem to be smarter then the teacher. This teacher lost total control of herself and the class, she is probably an affirmative action hire. IMHO, she needs to be tested on her proficiency in teaching social studies. Everyday people critisize the POTUS, politicians, talk show host, television guests. Does she think they should all be arrested? The left even made a movie about killing a president whe Bush was president, no one got arrested, did she even know that. I really have to wonder how much students really learn in her class?

Though, I hope the thread title shall be changed .....(perhaps, kbp?)

And, hope DRUDGE will pick this up .....
Why is anyone allowed to be a teacher while
spouting proven falsehoods.

Are most students capable of understanding basic civics and governmental policies? YES
Do students at this school need 'special assistance' to be able to form their own opinions? NO
Should students be encouraged to form their own opinion? YES
Is this 'teacher' supporting and assisting in the the education of students? NO

Rowan-Salisbury is NOT in an area targeted for "extra special attention / funds.
Sadly, this teacher proves, yet again, that incompetence is ingrained in the NEA (or whatever the non-union in NC is called) and many public school authorities.

The underlying message from this so-called educator is, sadly, much too true.
Just curious ..... where did this person receive a college degree?

The title was put up in humor, using what others had posted and adding a question mark to not tie the act to NC only ...though it did happen there.

I am certainly open to changing the title. It's no biggie to me, the articles and audio are what were important.

Any suggestions?

Don't change the title. This is the state the DNC opted to host the second coronation of Obama as the Sun King of the United States. In the meantime, we have seen the John Edwards trial play out, a scandal erupt in the State Dem. Party, the voters turn their back on same sex marriage all the while Ms. Uneducated, Know it All in Salisbury uses her race to have an idiot eruption about what is and is not appropriate language when addressing the qualifications of a sitting President. I am hoping this convention comes back to bite every DNC member in the State who thought NC was going to be on the right side of this election.

I do not think changing the title is a big deal. There are probably many better ways to title it, we just need a suggestion from one better than I at it. I never have been good at starting or naming threads!

...only in Norf Ca'lina???????

Why not change it to something like "how dumb teachers can be". And the reason I say this is because it can happen anywhere. And for those of us who live here in north Carolina, we know that the school systems are better than this particular teacher exemplifies as to what happens ...only in Norf' Ca'lina???????

Just my opinion.

Many of the reader comments that follow the first article to which kbp provides a link above are most amusing.. To a poster who writes that the ignorant teacher needs to be "spoon fed" the Constitution, another poster responds, "You'll find it under Obama's feet, maybe it can be fed to her while she's down there licking his shoes."

These "episodes" ought to revive a distinction that teachers unions have rarely smiled upon: getting schooled should never be mistaken for getting educated.

The parents and the student were interviewed on the local 106.1 fm radio station (covers most of the state) this morning. The parents were well aware of this teachers bias and racism in the classroom. They were well aware of the continuous degradation of the student and a few of his "conservative" friends in the class. The kid decided to record the class activities to make sure that his father knew he was not making this stuff up. The mother indicate it was not disrespect or racial but just a kid asking a question that the biased and progressive teacher did not want to answer without starting to yell at the questioner (just like all people who cannot defend their biases). The father did discuss this with the principal and felt satisfied with that discussion. The father, by the way, said that he did not graduate high school but did get his GED. The student, whose name is Hunter, has been withdrawn from that school and will finish up his high school career at the local community college. No word on what the discipline will be for this teacher. There will be no discipline for the student....he was just asking a question.

We have seen these teachers act this way all over the country, not just in NC. If one wishes to straighten this out, parents need to organize to convince the local school boards to convince these teachers that all students opinions will be respected in the classroom.
