Had the fire been much worse, I doubt that Chevron would rebuild in California ...if the state would even let them.

Had the fire been much worse, I doubt that Chevron would rebuild in California ...if the state would even let them.
This plant was first constructed in the early 1900's. It has had numerous upgrades, fires, modernizations, and expansions. It is one of 26 refineries in the west coast & third largest in California. It is critical for delivery of products throughout the west coast. Chevron is also California's largest private employer with 10,000 people.

The Chevron Richmond Refinery is a 2,900-acre (12 km2) petroleum refinery in Richmond, California, on San Francisco Bay. It is owned and operated by Chevron Corporation and employs more than 1,200 workers, making it the city's largest employer. The refinery processes approximately 240,000 barrels (38,000 m3) of crude oil a day in the manufacture of petroleum products and other chemicals. The refinery's primary products are motor gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel and lubricants..snipped

California has long fought efforts to build new refineries. So when times like this happen they suffer the consequences. Now commenters are complaining that gas prices are going to go up and that's not fair.

But that's life in Marxist California, besides Chevron "didn't build it."

Refinery fire could boost gas prices nationwide

Motorists in West Coast states are about to see a big spike in gas prices, the fallout from a fire that cut production at one of the region's largest oil refineries.

Gasoline prices, now averaging $3.87 a gallon in California, $3.72 in Washington and $3.69 in Oregon, are expected to spike to $4.15 to $4.25 a gallon over the next week to 10 days following Monday's partial shutdown of a Chevron refinery in Richmond, Calif.

Nationally, gasoline prices have climbed 27 cents a gallon in the past month. While the refinery fire will drive prices along the West Coast, it will also lift the national average above year-ago levels.

"August looks like a very touch-and-go month for the entire country," says Oil Price Information Service energy analyst Tom Kloza, who expects price relief after Labor Day. For the year to date, gasoline has averaged $3.61 a gallon — 10 cents more than the average for all 2011, the most expensive year ever, he says.

Patrick DeHaan, senior oil analyst for gasbuddy.com, expects California, Oregon and western Washington state to experience price spikes like the ones that hit major parts of the Midwest in June, when an Illinois refinery shut down and three others in the state cut production.

"The West Coast is on the launch pad waiting for takeoff," DeHaan says. "We're talking over $4 a gallon, easily. It's not going to be good for motorists."...snipped

NC gas prices rise 45 cents a gallon in a month
Posted: 11:26 a.m. yesterday
Updated: 6:29 a.m. today

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The break North Carolina drivers got on gas prices earlier this summer is gone.

AAA Carolinas said Wednesday that for the first time this summer motorists are paying more for a gallon of gas than they did on the same day a year ago.

The price Wednesday was $3.63 a gallon, two cents more than it was on Aug. 15 last year. Gas prices are also up from $3.18 a gallon on July 4, the lowest price in North Carolina this year.

The motor club says the increase has been fueled by the expanding economy increasing demand, predictions of more hurricanes than average and uncertainty over oil supplies in the Middle East.

Notice the AP story out yesterday blaming it all on Isaac. Such BS. Prices have been increasing for months now.

Isaac is a small contributor. There are some large refineries not producing around the world. That is why gas has been going up, up up and up.

Gas prices climb past $4 mark, break Labor Day record
Posted: 9:53 p.m. yesterday
Updated: 11:09 p.m. yesterday

Mebane, N.C. — Gas prices at several Mebane fuel stations climbed past the $4 mark Sunday, while pump prices nationwide broke the all-time record for Labor Day weekend.

Hurricane Isaac is one reason for the price increase, which has crept up about one penny each day since the Fourth of July, according to AAA Carolinas.

In the Triangle, prices are up about 19 cents over Labor Day weekend last year.

Edith Perry said many drivers have no choice but to pay extra.

"Gas prices go up at the most inappropriate times," she said. "Times when you know people are traveling quite a bit and, with the economy as it is, people are traveling more within 300 or 400 miles, you know, locally."

Less than one mile away from a Mebane BP with unleaded gas for $4.07, WRAL News spotted stations selling gas for around $3.70. That's why drivers should do some research before just filling up at the nearest pump.

Fuel Tracker lists where to find the least expensive gas in the area.

Prices are expected to drop once peak summer driving season winds down. In the meantime, Tim Crutchfield said he's staying home.
