http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/09/15/jobless-claims-rise-again-428k-weekly-first-time-benefits-requests/ Jobless Claims Rise Again -- 428K Weekly First-Time Benefits Requests Published September 15, 2011 WASHINGTON -- The number of people applying for unemployment benefits last week jumped to the highest level in three months, a sign that layoffs could be increasing. The Labor Department says weekly applications rose by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 428,000. The week included the Labor Day holiday. Applications typically drop during short work weeks. In this case, applications didn't drop as much as the department expected, so the seasonally adjusted value rose. A Labor spokesman says the total wasn't affected by Hurricane Irene. Still, applications appear to be trending up. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose for the fourth straight week to 419,500. Applications need to fall below 375,000 to indicate that hiring is increasing enough to lower the unemployment rate. |

http://www.wral.com/business/story/10134706/ NC high-tech job openings drop another 6.5% in August Posted: 6:56 a.m. today Research Triangle Park, N.C. — Information technology job openings across North Carolina fell another 6.5 percent in August, and the conclusion is not good for job seekers. The losing streak of advertised positions has reached five months – “a clear sign that the IT economy is going into the wrong direction.” So concludes the latest “IT Job Trends” report from the North Carolina Technology Association and two talent management firms, TEK Systems and SkillPROOF. The bottom line: North Carolina's high-tech job sector isn't going to be giving any kind of real boost to the state's economy - at least this year. In fact, the number of jobs available has now dropped below those of a year ago for two consecutive months. The “summer of recovery” as proclaimed by politicians a year ago has disappeared in maybe what we should call “summer of reality” in 2011. Job openings fell to 3,440 last month, down from 3,680 in July. A year ago, IT openings stood at 4,560. snip..... |

I wouldn't call it good news, or cheer that Obama failed ...that's my complaint! I suppose the good news is it should be more obvious that robbing Peter to pay Paul does not work. ADD: a re-read cleared me up on what you meant! I didn't sleep well last night!

It appears what was suspected is true, the economy turn downward in July & August. No it isn't good news for any of us. The misery index is sure to rise. Yesterday I had lunch with a retired engineer from a city of 50,000. He said the City has layoff or retired over half of their employees. They don't have the revenue. Worse they are saddled with a decade of debt on capital improvements and pension & medical costs which continue to rise due to existing contracts and include retired employees. This is being replayed in more & more California cities. School Districts are in the same boat. There are some districts which over-expanded and new schools are sitting empty, but not the bond payments. I have come to understand LTC's biting humor. I think he has taken on a bit of a political satirist role here, quite well! Edited by Baldo, Sep 15 2011, 09:23 AM.

http://www.wral.com/business/story/10141598/ NC unemployment rate hits 10.4 percent - highest in over a year Posted: 10:33 a.m. today Updated: 37 minutes ago Raleigh, N.C. — North Carolina’s unemployment rate increased to 10.4 percent in August, the highest rate in more than a year. The state’s Employment Service Commission reported Friday that the number of non-farm jobs increased by 16,500. However, the ranks of the unemployed still grew by 11,747 to 468,140. The jobless rate is the highest since 10.5 percent in June 2010. The rate in July was 10.1 percent. Nationally, unemployment stands at 9.1 percent. Most of the net job increase came in the government sector at 13,600 as many school districts opened for a new academic year. “We are seeing gains in employment,” said Larry Parker, spokesperson for the ESC. “They are not large gains, but we have added more than 31,000 jobs since January.” The growth in government payrolls came despite state budget cuts that took effect in July. Parker said the surge in government payrolls was “similar but somewhat smaller” than in the past. Overall government payrolls are down 15,000 from August of last year. The growth in government payrolls came despite state budget cuts that took effect in July. The size of the state’s labor force also decreased by nearly 2,700 as more people dropped out of the work force, no longer seeking employment. Based on a household survey that counts self-employed and other workers, the number of people holding jobs fell to 4.03 million from 4.045 million in July. |

Let me remind you that the Obama & the DNC chose Charlotte, NC as the site of the Democratic National Convention and Obama's re-coronation It is scheduled to be held during the week of September 3, 2012 I expect Obama to pass out our money to try to lower the unemployment in Charlotte, but I doubt they expected it to be this bad. Good point there! You know every department has a few dollars in the slush fund to push around, along with the authority to redirect other funds by delaying a project or two elsewhere. |

California unemployment rate rises to 12.1% in August California's unemployment rate ticked up a notch in August, to 12.1% from 12% the month before, according to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employers shed 8,400 jobs from payrolls. The numbers were little surprise to economists, who had anticipated no growth after national data showed that employers added no jobs nationally in August, when the U.S. unemployment rate stayed steady at 9.1%. "Businesses are very reluctant to hire people," said Sung Won Sohn, an economist at Cal State Channel Islands in Camarillo. "The last thing they want to do is hire people and then fire them again a few months later." California has the second-highest unemployment rate in the nation, after Nevada, where 13.4% of the people in the labor force are out of work....snipped http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/money_co/2011/09/california-unemployment.html |
