That Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC this evening is awful...and I have only seen bits of it between channel changes...

I'm not sure what to make of the title of this article
BUT, of course, CNN went out of its way to find a Muslim
family who lost someone on 9/11.

For Muslim family, faith complicates grief

The terrorist attack stole Baraheen Ashrafi's husband, robbed her children of their father and perverted the way some see the family's religion. As they grieve, they are also determined to show America the true face of Islam.

Edmond, Oklahoma (CNN) -- His smiling image has been cut out of a snapshot and carefully added to a photo of his father, so it looks as if the boy is standing beside the man. It smacks of a bad Photoshop job, but it gives the two a shared moment, even though they never met.
The boy's sister, Fahina, created the montage. She is 15 and clings to scant memories and aging photographs. But Farqad, almost 10, has nothing.

She remembers sitting beside their father on amusement park rides, his words -- "Look at my daughter; she's so brave" -- soothing her nerves; she still thinks of him whenever she's on a rollercoaster. She leaned on his legs when he watched basketball on TV and imagined him cheering her on when she played the sport after he was gone. She recalls being driven to see Harvard University, before she even started elementary school, and dreams of attending an Ivy League school to make him proud.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, she woke up extra early on her own. After her father and mother finished saying morning prayers, the young girl took his face in her small hands and enlisted the promise of a Chuck E. Cheese visit. Father and daughter then kissed and said goodbye.
Farqad was born two days later, after terrorists hijacked planes and killed nearly 3,000 -- including 38-year-old Mohammad Salahuddin Chowdhury, who worked atop the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

The Windows on the World banquet server was a degreed physicist in his native Bangladesh and a U.S. citizen who aspired to do so much more in his adopted country. He kept a pager at hand that fateful morning, just in case his wife went into labor.

"I can't imagine not having any memories," said his firstborn, Fahina, unable to hold back her sobs. "Someday, Farqad's going to search online and see everything. I have to help him understand."

This teen's uber-sense of responsibility extends beyond what she believes she owes her brother. As a young woman whose father was killed by men who dared to say they shared her Islamic faith, Fahina feels an obligation to speak up, to be the face of her often-misunderstood religion -- even if she'd prefer not to be known for what she lost and how she lost it.

I remember what I was thinking about on September 12.

We learned that normally there were about 50,000 people who worked in the Twin Towers.  But because it was a primary election day and also it was the first day of school for the area, many people intended to come to work much later than they normally did.  I give thanks for that.

I also give thanks for the unheralded work of the designing engineers who built such strong buildings that they didn't immediately fall and so many people were able to escape.  I believe the intention was for the buildings to fail soon after impact and to kill all of the people who normally would have been in the Twin Towers.  3,000 dead is horrendous but 50,000 would be just hideous.

The portion of the Pentagon that was plowed into by the third plane was the portion that has just been renovated.  The windows and walls there had been greatly strengthened.  If the plane had hit in a different area, it might very well have destroyed so much more of the building and the casualties would have been so much higher.

It was the bravery of the passengers on the fourth plane that prevented it from traveling to Washington and hitting either the White House or the Capitol building.  I can't even imagine the horror if that had happened.

So, amid the intense feelings of sadness, grief and anger that we all share,  there is still much for which we can be thankful.

On this Sunday morning, ten years after the evil attack upon the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the people aboard Flight 93, I offer this simple prayer.

Almighty God, continue to hold close those who died or were injured when the planes struck, as well as those who sacrificed themselves helping others. Bless those who lost a husband or a wife, a son or a daughter, a father or a mother, a brother or a sister, a close friend or just a fellow citizen. Make us vigilant in the defense of freedom, thankful for the opportunities we enjoy, and eager to meet the many challenges that we face as a free people.

I hope you always jump in rain puddles.

A tragic event like 9/11 leaves me curious about what benefit we’ve gained from it. It's difficult to get enthusiastic over what I classify as excessive security measures, though some may have prevented another tragic loss. Is the trade off worth it?

Up until we saw the bowing and Arab Spring, I felt the attention on the Mideast source of the attacks was helpful. Now I’m not clear on where we’re headed there.

Maybe the best result was in how it pulled us all together to face the reality of what could happen. What am I missing?

I saw what they were doing for security in NYC and I could only shake my head in wonder...what in the world?

Watching President Bush greet family members at the WTC, I am reminded of the poignant moment when President Regan embraced an astronaut's daughter in Houston.

She collapsed in his arms in grief and he held her tightly. That was another moment I will never forget in my lifetime.

I watched a TLC Program last night

Heroes of the 88th Floor, “an extraordinary tale of bravery and survival inside the World Trade Center after Flight 11 struck the North Tower on September 11, 2001.”

“Frank DeMartini and Pablo Ortiz — we hear the extraordinary story of how their remarkable acts of heroism, selflessness, and courage saved the lives of over 75 people and touched many more. We also hear from the survivors themselves, their first-hand accounts of what it was like to be at the centre of this tragic day — and through archived footage and dramatic recreations — we relive their chilling moments of being stranded on the upper floors of the North Tower and their race against time to survive."
\

These two men lost their lives because they continued to look for survivors and actually broke down walls going up the stairwells to free people. They were personally responsible for saving over 75 people. The program also showed how this great act of courage inspired those survivors on that day to help others and continues to change lives today.

Here's to

Frank DeMartini and Pablo Ortiz

I am watching the ceremonies as broadcast on NBC. Laura Bush and former President Bush are very visibly overcome. Mrs. Bush holding either the arm or hand of her husband - wiping away tears. Bush is only with great difficulty holding tears in check.

It is hard to read the Obamas.

The Years of Shame

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?

Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.

What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. Te atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.

A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?

The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.

I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons.

Krugman is a hateful, hateful monk of the Progressive Church. His bile is what infects Academia and the Left Wing of our politics. His pomposity, his arrogance, his ignorance is exactly what is leading us into the abyss ...as he and his ilk follow the Buffoon Piper of Academia as he undermines everything that made this country great....leaving destruction as the fruit of everything they touch.

This will be widely read and outrage will cement the division between us. So Krugman, on a practical level, helps to defeat his already pathetic losing cause...and credibility.

So true. Isn't it interesting that he will not allow any comments? What does that say - he is so intellectually dihonest that he will not even engage in dialogue (to use the phrase that pseudo-intellectuals like Krugman are found of spouting) with those either agree or disagree - the vast majority of the US - with his point of view.
