President Barack Obama has been promising a major address on the nation's persistently high unemployment rate to follow Labor Day, and today he announced the schedule with an extra dig at political opponents: He wants a joint session of Congress to hear the speech, and has set it for 8 p.m. next Wednesday -- the exact time as the Republican presidential debate. As The New York Times points out, " it is remarkable that he would choose to [make the speech] in such an elevated setting, and at the same time that Republican candidates for president will be laying out their own vision for how to get the country out of the economic doldrums — a gesture of challenge from a president who appears set on laying out as stark a contrast as he can between where he would like to take the country and where the opposition would go." Obama made the scheduling announcement in a letter to the leaders of both parties, in which he said it was his "intention to lay out a series of bipartisan proposals that the Congress can take immediately to continue to rebuild the American economy by strengthening small businesses, helping Americans get back to work, and putting more money in the paychecks of the middle class and working American." http://news.yahoo.com/obama-puts-joint-session-jobs-speech-against-republican-172200829.html He takes off for vacation at Martha's Vineyard promising a speech s on Sept 5, then schedules it exactly when the Republican debate is to occurred If anyone has any doubts how vindictive & mean this man will get it has now been disclosed for all to see. If I was the Republican Leader in the House & Senate I would tell him, "Nuts!" What an AZZ! Edited by Baldo, Aug 31 2011, 12:52 PM.

I'd rather watch the debate but the network covering it might postpone the debate to cover Obama's speech. It is rather peevish and petulant for Obama to schedule a joint session of Congress and at the same time as the Republican debate. Hopefully, he won't call out members of Congress as he did with the Supreme Court (during his state of the Union address). |

The simple solution could beVERY beneficial to the candidates. Reschedule the debate for the day following Obama's "speech" and open that debate up to responses to that "speech". I see this as opportunity that starts off with Obama looking like the azzhat and ends up making HIM the target. |

If this was a accident by 0bama he should just ask for a different day. If 0bama doesn't request a new day soon Boehner should tell him all the other days that are open. And if 0bama doesn't want one of those days to stick it up his..............................

Okay, Obama really is dumb. What were they thinking with this move? Obviously, he needs bi-partisan support...so he starts out with this obnoxious power move. No way is that lost on the general public. Ask any woman ANYWHERE...when you are trying to make friends, you don't throw a competing party. Now, if he refuses to move the speech...he looks the Arrogant Buffoon he is...only interested in political gamesmanship. If he moves it...he looks wimpy. Obama is in a lose-lose. These geniuses have no common sense. Dopes. Edited by Joan Foster, Aug 31 2011, 05:08 PM.

Joan: "Now, if he refuses to move the speech..." Technically, he does not control the decision on whether or not he can give a speech to Congress in their House. He could have a press conference just about any place else he wants. I was wrong on the night after idea, hadn't considered the football game. It's hard to believe Obama's objective was to belittle GOP Congressional members for not rescheduling to fit his schedule. Maybe Obama hasn't completed his homework and is using this to buy more time. It's becoming obvious I can't figure out why Obama did that. |

It's a stupid move because it looks petty and arrogant. No matter how it's resolved Obama is strengthening the growing perception that he is petty, arrogant, and hyper-partisan. It is just plain DUMB to give a speech asking for "bi-partisan" support after a heavy-handed partisan move like this. The debate is being sponsored in part by lefty blog Politico....and they might put a nice face on it, but they cannot be happy. Before Obama has even GIVEN the speech, he's provided the means by which it will be remembered...partisan arrogance and petty political gamesmanship. Dumb, dumb, dumb. |
