Bill Bowen was the president of my university in the late '70s and was well known for his dismissive views of mainstream college athletics. He was hired because of his prejudices. It was simply known that his report would be critical of the team. That was his bent. It's like hiring Ahmadinejad to head up a commission studying the history of the the Shoah. He did no independent study of the facts, and therefore got them all wrong. He was rarely (in my opinion) right about anything during my tenure at his university, or if he was, it was by accident.

"the underestimation of the seriousness of the charges" was the problem.

They must have been informed up to that point, that there was great doubt as to the veracity and the actual lack of actual physical evidence of a beat-down/gang rape.

Hence DU's surprise at the "seriousness of the charges" - there was no evidence up to this point except hearsay about a crying hysterical drug-seeking possum-playing actress.

If you want drugs and are in physical withdrawal, how easy is it to cry and scream to get attention, and to make the present morning hospital employees feel uncomfortable.
Remember, basically the overnight shift effectively sedated CGM and had her "sleep it off" - right?

While West has merely invited reporters to come to him, Victoria Peterson, a woman who has long aspired to be a Durham political player, has charged into the fray, appointing herself a spokeswoman and defender.

When cameras gather, Peterson is there, sharply attired in a summer dress and matching hat. Whether anyone with a press pass wants to listen, Peterson is heard.

"Excuse me, we would like to do a press conference if anybody would like to listen to what some of the African-American women of this community have to say," Peterson said as reporters and TV cameras turned to follow a lawyer downstairs after a June hearing.

Three reporters finally stopped and took notes as Peterson talked about rape statistics in Durham.

Peterson, 52, said she is a watchdog, not a publicity hound. On Friday, when Nifong held a news conference, Peterson was the only nonreporter to ask a question. Before asking Nifong about how he would handle other rape cases in Durham, Peterson introduced herself to the room.

"When you're dealing with a rape situation, it's very hard for a woman to be treated with dignity and respect," she said while waiting in the front row for a recent hearing to start. "I believe she's entitled to her day in court. That's what I want to see and make sure this happens."

University rape highlights racial divisions in South

A racially charged sex scandal at one of America's most prestigious universities could have sprung straight from the pen of Tom Wolfe, the unflinching chronicler of colour and class in contemporary America.

The setting is Duke University, an expensive private academy with a predominantly white student population located in the racially divided North Carolina town of Durham.

Duke has been rocked by the claim by a young black woman that she was beaten, raped and subjected to racial abuse by three white men from Duke's highly rated Blue Devils lacrosse team after being hired as a stripper for a sports club party. The athletes deny the allegations.

The frictions are exacerbated by the fact that the alleged victim, who has not been named, is a student at the city's other university, North Carolina Central, which is mainly black.

Lacrosse is traditionally the preserve of affluent, young whites, and the Blue Devils, losing finalists in last year's national college title game, are no exception.

Just one of the 47 members of the college team is black - and he was the only one not to be required to take a DNA test after the young woman specified the skin colour of her alleged assailants.
The furore has highlighted racial and social divisions in a city where the charged history of the South remains fresh in many minds.

It has also caught the interest of Wolfe, who has drawn on such themes in his three best-sellers: Bonfire of the Vanities, A Man in Full and - most recently - I Am Charlotte Simmons, his 2004 account of life at a hard-partying university located next to a slum.

"It really doesn't take very much to create a flashpoint between different racial groups in this country these days," the author told the Sunday Telegraph. "People might not like to admit it, but race in America is one of the keynote issues of our age."

I Am Charlotte Simmons even features the drink-fuelled, sexist and racist exploits of rich young lacrosse players.
"As basketball and [American] football are dominated by black athletes on campuses nowadays, lacrosse is pretty much the last chance for white kids to show off their machismo in college sports," Wolfe said.
"They are noted on college as the hardest-partying and in my book they are badly behaved."

He said his fictional Dupont University was the amalgam of various real-life colleges, though many at Duke - from where his daughter graduated in 2002 - are convinced that their campus is the inspiration for the book.

Writing about the novel in the Durham Herald-Sun, Stuart Rojstaczer, a Duke academic, observed: "The central thesis in this book about college life at Duke is that sex so dominates undergraduate culture that there is room for little else… [It] is a dead-on accurate description of one-third of the student population."

The town-and-gown divide between Durham and Duke is striking. A year's undergraduate fees at the university come to $41,239 (£23,632) while the average household income in the surrounding district is $43,337. Eleven per cent of Duke's students are black, compared with 44 per cent in the town.

Some locals refer to the college as "the evil empire" and claim that the students feel that they can behave with impunity. The assault claims have sparked protests on campus by some students against what they claim is a culture of privilege that protects the wealthy.

Lawyers for the lacrosse players claimed last week that there were glaring inconsistencies in the account of the woman. They said that no crime had occurred and that the DNA samples would clear their clients, who were victims of a "lynch mob mentality".

But Michael Nifong, the district attorney, said that evidence indicated the woman was assaulted. He claimed that the athletes were not co-operating.

"There's been a feeling in the past that Duke students are treated differently by the courts," he said. "There was a feeling that Duke students' daddies could buy them expensive lawyers and that they knew the right people."

Great one, Concerned.

A news release from Durham CrimeStoppers has been amended several times since the original release:

In an April 3 news release offering cash rewards for information, CrimeStoppers coordinator Cpl. David Addison wrote, "The victim was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed. This horrific crime sent shock waves throughout our community."

Tuesday at 11:16 a.m., Addison e-mailed the same release, but modified the first sentence to read: "The victim alleges that she was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed." The second sentence calling the incident a "horrific crime" was deleted.

Eighteen minutes later, an amended CrimeStoppers release was sent. The only change was that "the victim" was now referred to as "the complainant."

Addison did not return calls inquiring about the change.

I would like to see the accrediting authority for NCCU do a complete audit of Crystal's records at the school. How does this school graduate her with highest honors and have any academic credibility?
Yes! Joe Cheshire said that they were not able to confirm that she
was an enrolled student at NCCU in the Spring of 2006.

The N&O article below, dated 13 April 2007, indicates that she had dropped out of NCCU:
http://www.newsobserver.com/2007/04/13/44070/mangums-life-conflict-contradictions.html

And, on the day of AG Cooper's Declaration of Innocence, Himan's notes
indicates that he asked Mangum "Do you think about going back to school?"
which further confirms that in Spring 2007, she was not a student at NCCU.

And, yet, she graduated one year later in May 2008 with honors?

The DNA will talk'

In the grassy quad outside his office, students took turns stepping before a microphone. Some shook with anger and teared up as they spoke.

"If you see them in class, ask them who did this," said Serena Sebring, a graduate student.

Some students sported T-shirts that said, "Men's Lax, Come Clean." A poster said, "The DNA will talk, even if the cowards of men's lacrosse won't."

Students urged Duke officials to do more to pressure players into cooperating with police.

"Being a Duke athlete is a privilege, and that can be revoked," said Brianne Ehrlich, a senior from Denver.

Durham Mayor Bill Bell, who spoke with Brodhead by phone Sunday, said in a telephone interview Monday that he realizes that officials are dealing with allegations and that police have not completed their investigation. Still, he said, "I'm concerned about the code of silence that continues to prevail."

While lauding athletics officials for forfeiting two lacrosse games, Bell urged them to go further. "I think it would send a strong message to the community if they canceled the whole season."

Vigils and protests over the incident started over the weekend.

Sage Amelia Asmus of Durham said she joined the campus protest Monday because she felt for the alleged victim.

"That is not OK -- anywhere," Asmus said. "I don't care how much money you have and what [expletive] sports team you're on."

Lee Coggins, who lives near the house where the alleged attack occurred, expressed solidarity with the victim.

"The community has got your back," Coggins said. "We will not let this be swept under the rug. Duke cannot run away from this."

This year, Haynie served on seven committees, including the panel that examined the culture of the lacrosse program. He directs graduate studies in political science and co-directs the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Gender in the Social Sciences.

He agrees with the conclusions in a recent report that said Duke President Richard Brodhead was advised about lacrosse early on by five white men on the senior leadership team -- which may have led to a lack of awareness of racial issues. When asked about that by reporters, Brodhead said diversity was important but added that he would hire only the best person for any given position.

Haynie fired off an e-mail message to Brodhead. "I thought that was an unfortunate comment," Haynie said.

My point was that, whatever comes of the rape allegations, the lacrosse team was widely known to be out of control long before those allegations were ever made.

Instead of stabilizing neighborhoods, Duke might want to first stabilize its student-athletes; you know, the ones who are supposed to be role models?

Upholding Duke's standards, Burness said, was lacrosse coach Mike Pressler's responsibility.

So dump him.

An interesting tidbit on Wiki about NCCU:

"Issues concerning degree accreditation -

In 2008, it was disclosed that the university had, since 2004, been operating a small satellite campus at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia, whose pastor, Bishop Eddie L. Long, is a member of the University Board of Trustees. The accreditor refused to recognize the degrees awarded to the 25 students who attended the program."

IIRC, that was posted on LS when it happened. It rings a bell (Bill Bell?) with me.

They will, however, recognize a degree of a drug addled false accuser who ostensibly graduated with honors.

The media investigated the "culture"...remember, Abb, Melanie said it had societal importance to "understand the culture"...,well, why is none in the media interested in the culture wherein Mangum operates. The culture of escort services, strip clubs, MAGNA CUM LAUDE degrees, mysterious jobs, mysterious means of support.

A man is dead...is his life less "meaningful" than Mangum's was in the Hoax?
