Dulcinea

Cervantes “Don Quixote” has been called by some “the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age in the Spanish literary canon.” Certainly it is the most influential work of literature today...in the city of Durham, North Carolina. Durham...wherein, we have witnessed an amazing replication of the well-known story-line, continuing now for over five years...of the elevation and canonization of a local prostitute with a stubborn determination that defies all reality.

Dulcinea.

Crystal Mangum.

In the stage version of the story, the local priest sings a song called "To Each His Dulcinea", in which he reflects that although Dulcinea does not exist, the idea of her is what keeps Don Quixote alive and on his quest.

Yeah, no kidding.

Even Cervantes could not have fathomed the height and breadth, and vampire like un-death of the fantastical Quest still underway at Duke and in Durham. It would be hilarious if it had not become dangerous and truly despicable in its recklessness.

We have seen the elevation of the sex-worker Mangum to become the archetypal Perfect Heroine-Victim, played out in Durham in real time...in serial false accusations, fire and knife-play. We have long ago twigged to what keeps most of these Hoaxers on their horses: the QUEST, the NEED to prove that Crystal Mangum is a “good mother”, a serious student, Sister Survivor, the heart-wrenching Perfect Victim.

She has to be.

Why? To PROVE that all those historic injustices of the past... that are paying off so well for SOME...STILL exist IN FULL MEASURE today. Because, only if these injustices exist with certain impunity and in full measure today... can the Victim Status that reaps power, provides paydays, and Special Perks...FOR SOME...remain. For this, three Lacrosse players, any three, needed to sacrifice their lifetimes.

"You owe me" plays well and pays well in politics and in the professorial domain of academia. It's not about the truth.

Let me be clear...the past should not be forgotten, I agree. But there will always be people who do not like people. However, we have now, as reparation for our history, institutionalized punishment for not liking... but to the benefit of just ONE set of people. The favored skin hue can not be charged for intimidating voters, can not be pursued for beating a victim in the name of race, and a disgruntled card-carrying member understands she can cause legal holy hell if a “noose” is found in her workplace. (You can, however, write "WOP" on any wall you please.)

How far will this special status in the law be expanded? How many lifetimes will it endure?

As long as the occasional Dulcinea appears...the concept has long legs. It’s a heady new power, condoned and followed by our DOJ today. Even Judge Beaty reminded us that the Duke lacrosse players were not entitled to the special victim status that would apply to other skin hues.

This kind of “favoritism” before the law would be a darn shame to lose. So on a regular basis, those in the Favored Victim Status Program feel they need to seek out Dulcinea to...re-qualify.

“Dulcinea...Dulcinea...we have seen thee, sought thee, sung thee...Dulcinea”

It is understood moreover...that even those who lack Victim Creds can advance if they can saddle up and join the Quest.

And so,it came to pass, in an election season (of course)...as if on cue, Mike Nifong..the Durham courthouse’s mix of the Man of La Mancha and Dog, the Bounty Hunter...to the trumpets of the media...produced his “find.”

Dulcinea.

Crystal Mangum.

The swooning began.

And the Questers knew what she needed to be. She had to be a heart-wrench-er...and so they created that aura. She had to be pure. She had to be worthy. She had to symbolize, in her short life, all the ills of society that still existed

For example, Kathy Davidson, a spokesman for the 88 Listeners ( a evangelical faction of the Questers) explained that Mangum was only working in the sex industry to pay her way through "an historic Black college."

Oh. As long as it was "historic."

Therefore it follows that Mangum had no problems that a full scholarship would not remedy. This then, enforces the Listeners goal on allocation of scholarship money. There MUST be more free rides at Duke allocated for other “Crystals” of their neighborhood Platinum Clubs...making others unavailable then... to, say, some coal-miner’s daughter working at Walmart. The fact that the coal-miners daughter might not major in the classes that support Quester jobs and their advancement...just...ummm..coincidental. (If you couch self-interest in faux empathy, hardly anyone confronts it.)

Davidson reminded us that the Listening Ad was written because the Duke campus was inundated with anger and hostility and "Castrate!" signs in the aftermath directed toward ...MINORITY students. Astounding whopper, but again unchallenged in our PC culture. But this is the back-drop needed for Dulcinea to appear. Mangum was to float above the Quad in her Perfect Victimhood...Sister Survivor...and behold, from her sacrifice ,would flood more grants and goodies to perpetuate Victim studies...pump up Quest-er power.

Off the Quad, in Durham, Dulcinea would be a “cash-cow” for local projects...a cross with which to beat the Supplicant Brodhead into any juicy concession they wanted.

Yes, Dulcinea had many practical aspects for those who purported to be moved by sympathetic nobility alone...one hand, wiping tears, the other stuck out to take whatever Mangum could get for them.

How they all used her.

But, now, here’s the trouble.

“There is no Dulcinea.
She’s made of flame and air.”

Actually, Mangum, their anointed one...is made of flame and unidentified multiple male DNA..

She is the fire-setting, chest-stabbing, motel-vibrating local sex-worker that five mortifying and myth-busting years later...the Quest-ers are STILL hell-bent to portray as Durham’s Mother-of-the-year and Local Genius...hell-bent whether it kills HER or more likely, one of her “boyfriends”...or God Forbid..a child.

Mangum is escalating. For all of those at Duke and in Durham, who have pimped out Mangum to advance their OWN agendas, for God’s sake..get the woman help. Get her children into a safe environment. You have been advanced at Duke...retained in your jobs in Durham...you have wrung everything out of her madness that you can.

We have seen her cleaned up, primped up, and propped up at microphones....passed off a racial icon..the Rosa Parks of the Platinum Club... in college classrooms. We have seen her granted “magna cum laude” degrees...but somehow unable to magna-cum-WORK at any job in a reputable field.

Mangum’s public madness, if it were covered as it should be...would show that her welfare as a human being means no more to any of you than the 30 years of Collin, Reade and Dave’s lives that you were prepared to barter....for your own ends. Sister Survivor...may not survive YOU.

In the stage play, Aldonza the prostitute, confronts Don Quixote with what the burden of his fantasies have done to her:

“Of all the cruel devils who badgered and battered me...YOU are the cruelest of all.”

AMEN, Sister, AMEN.

Absolutely right on. Joan's writing hits the nail on the head. Crystal, as portrayed by the illusionists, is a construct-- a figure for the benefit of a select group (s).

Great piece, Joan and so true of our entire society today. The same can be said for much of the Obama myth.

Everything you wrote is absolutely and unequivocally true.

If anyone had any doubt, just look at the fact that Wagstaff and others
were in court again this morning to show their support for Mangum, and to
get her back out onto the streets AFTER she reportedly stabbed someone 7 times!

It's all because she never got her day in court (in the LAX case) ... :bump: :bump: :bump:
