Bear in mind that most if not all of these convictions were pled down from felony charges. |

Not according to the Durham County Current Inmate Population list, abb, which admittedly has some lag. You can also sign up w/ VINE to get a msg via phone or email when an inmate is released, again, with some lag. RD would be quite foolish to depend on that notification to know when he needs to unhook the IV and beat feet. Since there were some questions about bail earlier (securded v cash, etc), here's a very basic primer (for others, not you, abb ;): 1) - 'Cash bond' means that the inmate has to come up with actual cash or otherwise suitable collateral (deed to real property, usually). A bail bondsman is not directly financially involved in this type of transaction, although most jurisdictions contract with bondsmen to do the due diligence on the collateral. 2) - 'Secured bond' means that the Court will accept a surety from an approved bail bondsman. The bondsman is bonded by the State, as an indication that they have the financial wherewithal to make good on the bail should an offender skip. The 10-15% fee paid by an offender is simply a transaction between the offender & the bail bond company for the company's assuming the financial risk of flight - the 'transaction' between the bondsman & the County consists of adding the offender to the list of persons that the bondsman is accepting responsibilty for. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ So, in Crystal's previous arson case, no real $$ changed hands - the bonding company (apparently) simply agreed to add Crystal to their bond without charging her or supporters a fee. But that was for a somewhat-less-serious charge, in the scheme of things, perhaps one that the bonding company was willing to accept the flight risk for no fee. Actually burying a blade in a guy's torso, multiple times, is a whole 'nuther situation entirely. At least in places other than Wonderland. |

Mangum will star in a sequel to the 1971 Clint Eastwood psychotic thriller: http://www.filmsite.org/playm.html The sequel will be called: "Play Crusty for Me." Mangum will have no problem recreating these various scenes from the original "Play Misty for Me": "Evelyn becomes angry and jealous, and knifes his (Eastwood's) cleaning woman and destroys his possessions." "A police sergeant, McCallum, sent to protect her (Evelyn), is stabbed to death with a pair of scissors." "In a truly scary, knife-wielding confrontation, he (Eastwood) is again attacked and badly wounded by Evelyn. After being slashed many times, he punches her in the jaw, sending her through the balcony to the ocean below." Edited by MikeZPU, Apr 6 2011, 06:24 PM.

Wonder what kind of heat the Power Structure is putting on the area bail bondsmen to spring her or keep her in jail? Anyone hear how the victim's doing? I would guess since he's made it through the first 72 hours without dying, that's good news. |

abb: Haha! That reminded me of that line from "Sleepless in Seattle" when Tom Hanks' son wants him to go meet some woman he doesn't know anything about. "Didn't you see 'Fatal Attraction'?" The son: "No, you wouldn't let me." Hanks: "Well, I did. And it scared the hell out of me. It scared the hell out of every man in this country." The question is: did Reginald Daye Wilson see "Fatal Attraction" ? |

All she needs is someone with $300,000 or so in collateral and just a little under $50 grand for the fee! The IRS lien leaves Reade out! Edited by kbp, Apr 6 2011, 07:40 PM.

More signs please. And somebody to make them. And some courageous people to carry them Here's one.... to be carried by a real gutsy Durhamite: Crystal Gayle Mangum's Cost to the Durham Country Taxpayer over the past 5 years $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Or Why won't the Durham County Authorities Assist Crystal To Get the Help She Needs to Get Her Life Together? Or "Would somebody please define "Habitual Criminal" for me?" or Does ANYBODY care about her children???? |

Not so fast my friend. Bail bondsmen charge a fee for their services. Usually it's 10% of the bond plus the surety, the person putting up the bond, has to pledge assets equal to the amount of the bond. It's something of a racket as 95+ percent (numbers I recall from my time as a PD in Cleveland, Durham appearance rates may be different) of all defendants show up for court. Even when the defendant fails to appear, it is rare that the bonding company has to pay off on a bond. Usually the court just puts them on a list of absconders and hopefully an alert traffic cop will pick them up on an unrelated traffic violation. There are a few bounty hunters, but honestly they are rare and mostly show up on reality TV programs. For Crystal's arson charge last year, she or one of her pals had to post up 10% to a bail bondsman who then got her out of jail. That money never gets refunded to the customer. That's just the way the bondsman makes his living. And a darn good living at that. Walt-in-Durham |
