Crystal Mangum Arrested Overnight - 4/3/11; Who didn't see this coming?

The woman was charged with driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, felony speeding to elude arrest, felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, and felony larceny of a motor vehicle. Court documents and her criminal and driving records show that her driver's license had been revoked before the incident, but they do not indicate why.

Under a deal with prosecutors, she pleaded guilty to four misdemeanors in the car chase: larceny, speeding to elude arrest, assault on a government official and DWI, according to court records.

She was required to serve three consecutive weekends in jail and was placed on two years' probation. She paid restitution and court costs, and completed her probation.

There are those in the AA community in Durham who routinely complain that
poor minorities are treated unfairly by the judicial system, relative to the wealthy.

However, people in rural areas could make the same complaint relative to
peopl who live in dense urban areas. In a rural area, you do what Mangum did
relative to stealing a car, speeding while being chased by police, and then running
down a police officer, you are going to do some hard jail time for multiple years with
near 100% certainty. Justice is certainly not meted out evenly across this country.

Joan:

I think you are right about Nifong being the most incompetent lazy prosecutor. It would not surprise me to find that Cy Gurney plays a role somewhere in all of this.

Just a question. Gurney is his second wife. I wonder what happened in his first marriage for it to go south.
You are correct she is his second wife. They have a son who is a pure gentleman ( I really mean that) and I admire his courage to withstand all of this.

He has a daughter Sarah, by his first wife.

Cy was married to a now Judge the first time.

Someone (reporter?)wrote a little about this at some point during the frame. iirc
Yeah, Cy really traded up.

Dissension among the Troika

Over the last few months, as ally after ally abandoned Mike Nifong, his sole remaining advisors became the Troika: wife Cy Gurney, “investigator” Linwood Wilson, and “activist” Victoria Peterson. These three appear to have come up with the idea to send Wilson to “interrogate” the accuser on December 21. Wilson's “report” set into motion the chain of events culminating in yesterday’s recusal.

Members of the Troika, however, made clear their disapproval of the move. In one of the case’s most bizarre lines, John Stevenson reported that Nifong’s “wife, Cy Gurney, said he had not mentioned his request to her.” He didn’t mention it?

Peterson, meanwhile, descended to the steps of the county courthouse, where she convened a 4pm “rally for justice” yesterday. The event, which was captured by ABC-11’s cameras, attracted a total of two people. (Truth is stranger than fiction.) Peterson lashed out, “There is no reason [for the recusal]. We have a district attorney who is well able, qualified, to do his job.”

While Gurney and Peterson will live to fight another day, Wilson’s fate seems darker. The only Troika member not to issue a public reaction to the recusal will have his work thoroughly examined over the next several weeks. Uninvolved investigators from the AG’s office surely will ask hard questions as to the origins of and motives for the December 21 “interrogation” and “report.”

At this stage, it’s hard to muster much sympathy for any of the Troika.

Crystal, a Moocher or a Looter?

A moocher is someone who begs or demands handouts or values. A looter is someone who uses force to expropriate values.
Not to be confused with Moochelle or Looterman :P

Cy really plays high stakes politics, doesn't she. Really, if you can't muster up better than Wilson and Peterson for your War Room, you have hit skid row.

TD - this is so true......but this begins at an early age. Children in school cannot be disciplined (I am not talking about spanking, I am just talking about having some sort of consequence - losing recess, sitting at lunch in silence, etc) when they misbehave becuase it would make them feel badly about themselves. They soon learn that anything goes. Hence you have outright chaos in a number of classrooms. This attitude pervades society. There is always an excuse for someone's bad behavior that excuses what he/she has done. It's the "my bad" syndrome.

It is the reason why I wake up at nights worried about where this nation is headed.
That taking away recess, or sitting at lunch reminds me of boot camp. We had screwed up drill one day and the drill instructor said, since you can't seem to get your act together, we will go back to the barracks and do nothing, most thought that was a good idea, because it was about 100 degrees on the drill field. When we got back to the barracks we did nothing, we had to stand at attention, in the barracks for three hours. Does anyone realize how long three hours are when you are standing at attention and staring at a wall?
Three hours is an eternity.

I serve as the detention monitor at my school (Queen of Detention). Students who find themselves as part of my posse (the frequent attendees will often stop by and tell me that they will be spending some quality time with me)spend an hour sitting straight up in the school desk with hands folded on the desk, feet flat on the floor, looking straight ahead - and of course, there is no talking. (JUG - justice under God). It is a long time for them....you would think that one time would suffice but there are some who I see so often that they have their own special seat in detention.

Just imagine if you can none of this would have happened if the call tot he stripper business sent what was asked for. So why did they send crystal? She was not close to anything asked for. Besides, crystal already had set up a pretty full night. Wasn't she in raleigh earlier that day trickin?

So how or why did crystal get the business with so many other strippers available?

Just imagine if the guys request was fulfilled for white or hispanic dancer strippers.

One person for whom I have a great deal of sympathy is Nifong's children. I would have to very difficult for them. Their father has become a laughingstock - his name forever associated with a drug/alcohol crazed hooker - it would be very hard to have respect for him.

Interesting....why would Duff Wilson be a facebook friend?

What does that say about his objectivity? Wonder when they became "friends"?

Something else just occured to me........regarding the status of Duff Wilson's on-line friendship with Cy....perhaps she was the source of the claim that was in the August NY TImes article in which it was stated (I think by Duff Wilson" that the Times had been shown (or told I can't remember the exact wording) that it (the NYT) had been shown information that gave credence to the charges against RCD.

In addition to perhaps Cy and friends, I have always believed that Crystal and the entire hoax was supported by Mayor Bell. Some locals may disagree, but I believe he has a yet to be discovered relationship with Crystal.

On another note. Since Jackie Wagstaff is a member of both the School Board and the City Council, shouldn't she have been sanctioned for her conduct in the Mangum trial last December. I can't imagine that the City could just ignore a 10 day sentence for contempt of court for a public servant. By the way, what was the reasoning behind Jackie getting out of jail earlier?

I've finally found Crystal's arrest records.

It's three pages long. I got them during the lax case so her two most recent arrests aren't on it.
