Obama to announce new steps to help housing woes
Posted: 41 minutes ago
Updated: 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — Seeking to circumvent congressional opposition, President Barack Obama will announce a series of executive branch steps aimed at jumpstarting the economy this week, beginning with new rules to make it easier for homeowners to refinance their mortgages.

An administration official said the housing initiative will help homeowners with little or no equity in their homes refinance by cutting the cost of doing so and removing caps for deeply underwater borrowers. The new rules apply to homeowners with federally guaranteed mortgages who are current on their payments.

Obama will announce the initiative Monday in Las Vegas, a city hard hit by foreclosures and sagging home prices.

With the president's jobs bill struggling in Congress, the White House is refocusing its efforts on steps Obama can take to address the nation's economic woes without getting lawmakers' approval. During his three-day trip to the West Coast this week, Obama will use a new catchphrase to try to push Republicans into action: "We can't wait."

It's his latest in a string of slogans aimed at placing blame on Republicans for lack of action on the economy.

The housing program Obama will announce Monday will be implemented by the independent Federal Housing Finance Agency. At its core, the initiative will relax eligibility standards for a federal refinancing program, allowing those who owe more on their house than it is worth to take advantage of loans with lower interest rates.

The administration official had no estimate for how many homeowners could be helped by relaxed rules. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the housing program ahead of the president.

Following his events in Las Vegas, the president will travel to Los Angeles for three fundraisers for his re-election campaign, including one at the home of movie stars Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Obama will also make stops this week in San Francisco and Denver.

Obama’s Foreign Policy: Manchurian Candidate or Keystone Kop?

http://pajamasmedia.com/barryrubin/2011/10/24/obamas-foreign-policy-manchurian-candidate-or-keystone-kop/2/

snip
In my opinion, the worst single blunder of Obama in the Middle East was his Cairo speech telling people in the region that they should perceive their primary identity as Muslim rather than in national terms. The idea that political Islam could be some asset for the United States — rather than an enemy being held back largely by nationalism — was like putting a big bomb next to a fragile dam. Yet Obama thought it was some act of far-sighted genius on his part because he could tame political Islam.

Second, Obama is a narrow-minded and arrogant man who understands little about international affairs or the profound differences of other cultures. He neither listens to ideas outside his own conception nor heeds proof that he has failed. A clever evil genius adjusts himself to circumstances, determined he will always look good. Obama is merely wrong and incompetent, openly displaying ignorance.

snip

This is all wrong and disastrous. But as George Orwell — who understood these things — once said, some ideas are so stupid that only an intellectual will believe them.

None of these points makes the current leadership and policy more acceptable or good. Having Gomer Pyle and Forrest Gump in power (without their humility and moral compass) is not better than having a James Bond villain or Dr. Evil running things.

How much does this debate over motives matter? Not a lot. The motive for having terrible policies is far less important than the fact that the policies are terrible. Moreover, one can prove what’s happening is a disaster but can never irrefutably prove why it is happening. The administration is now telling us that it only spent a couple billion dollars of U.S. taxpayer money to get rid of Muamma al-Qadhafi. What’s imortant is not why they did it but the fact that they might well have given us a radical anti-American Islamist dictatorship in his place.

A fool is worse than a traitor if only because more people will vote for him.

Oh, there is one more thing: If you don’t understand the ideas that a bad policy is based on, than you can’t refute it and explain to people why it is so counterproductive and must be changed as soon as possible.

Shell Gets Permits for Arctic Drilling: 'A Genuine Long-Term Stimulus Plan’

Obama may actually have something in the way of "stimulus" to brag about ...unless he changes his mind no matter what the election outcome is.

Math Fun with President Obama

October 25, 2011 4:08 P.M.

By Peter Kirsanow

With math skills like this, no wonder the federal deficit is $1.3 trillion:

The Washington Examiner reports that at a fundraiser in Las Vegas, the president said the following about his jobs bill:

But last week, we had a separate vote on a part of the jobs bill that would put 400,000 teachers, firefighters and police officers back on the job, paid for by asking people who make more than $1 million to pay one-half of 1 percent in additional taxes. For somebody making $1.1 million a year, that’s an extra $500. Five hundred bucks. And with that, we could have saved 400,000 jobs.

Most people making more than $1 million, if you talk to them, they’ll say, I’m willing to pay $500 extra to help the county. They’re patriots. They believe we’re all in this thing together. But all the Republicans in the Senate said no.
(Emphasis added).

As every Corner reader who graduated from 4th grade determined immediately upon reading the above quote, one half of 1 percent of $1.1 million is $5,500, not $500. But, hey, even though he said it three times, cut the president some slack — he’s off only by about factor of ten.

But even if the president meant to say $5,500, his math continues to pose some challenges. According to the IRS, a total of 235,413 taxpayers earned more than $1 million last year. If each “was willing to pay $[5,]500 extra to help the country,” that would generate only $1.3 billion in revenue — approximately what the federal government spends every three hours. Wouldn’t it be just as patriotic for President Obama to turn off the federal spigot for three hours and dedicate the savings to funding those 400,000 jobs?

The president at least deserves credit for finally bringing down the cost of all those jobs his administration “saves or creates.” Saving 400,000 jobs at a cost of $1.3 billion comes to just $3,250 per job — far less than the $250,000 per each job allegedly created by the 2009 stimulus bill.

But wait, that means that each of the 400,000 jobs will only pay $ 1.60 an hour — far below the lawful minimum wage. And that’s without benefits. Aren’t those the kind of jobs Americans won’t do?

Even if the president were to politely “ask” all of those willing millionaire patriots to pay an extra one half of 1 percent of their total aggregate income for 2010, the added revenue would be only about $3.6 billion. But that still comes to only around $4.50 an hour, again without benefits. Not sure how many cops, firefighters, and teachers would be willing to work at that rate — even if the Department of Labor permitted it.

Maybe the president should just ask the 47 percent of American filers who pay no federal income taxes if they’re willing to pony up anything for those shovel-ready jobs. Surely the president doesn’t think millionaires are the only patriots in this country.

I had seen clips of news reports on this a couple days ago, but not much in the MSM top headlines.

Tax on Wealthy Isn’t Enough to Curb Deficit, Gates Says on ABC

Raising taxes on the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans wouldn’t be enough to close the U.S. federal deficit gap, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“I’m generally in favor of the idea that the rich should pay somewhat more,” Gates said. “To really deal with the deficit gap we’re talking about, that alone just numerically is not going to be enough.”

Doesn't fit well with Barry's cure-all plan.

We may soon see his brilliance at work!

Obama: I'll make the call on Keystone XL project

Not sure why he dropped this call into his own lap, the outcome only determines how much he loses.

Approval will have the climate and eco groups whining, and

...disapproval will bury him deeper with the unemployed and keep money flowing to countries outside of our continent.

Assigning himself this task creates a mystery I'm not smart enough to solve.

From MSNBC...

Obama the root of America's jobs problem

By Staff Writer - PhillyBurbs.com

Once again, President Obama was demanding prompt passage of another bill to squander more borrowed money in an attempt to create new jobs. Fortunately, it didn’t pass.

What Obama and his supporters won’t admit is that America’s jobs problem is the result of Obama’s policies. The health care bill, green crusade and socialist tilt all scare businesses.

The president’s socialistic mindset and cabal of appointed czars, plus other appointees, appear determined to destroy America’s oil and coal industries. He refuses to allow drilling, and his EPA is shutting down coal-plants. Even unions are now objecting to the impending plant closures.

Before Obama was elected, he said that we would reform our existing energy sector and make energy prices skyrocket. He was elected and is now trying to do exactly that. Happy?

Obama has just squandered a half-billion dollars on a failed green jobs company that was a campaign contributor. The taxpayers will be stuck with paying the bill.

Obama’s EPA is using a ploy to attack the Gibson Guitar Co. because it is a nonunion company. His NLRB is trying to prevent Boeing from creating thousands of good jobs in South Carolina.

Obama’s redistributional mindset, ill-conceived health care bill and determination to create impractical green jobs at the expense of good existing jobs — these reasons are at the root of our jobs problems.

America will not be able to restore its workforce until after Obama and his cabal are replaced. Until then, we can only hope for change. Once Obama is gone, industry will be able to restore America’s lost jobs. There will be no need to create new jobs, since most workers will probably be able to get their good old jobs back.

That will be a welcome change.

Congressman: Science 'czar' giving China U.S. technology

'Following law not voluntary for administration officials'

John Holdren

A congressman says he's alarmed that President Obama's science "czar," John Holdren, apparently has been collaborating with the Chinese even though Congress specifically prohibited that activity in a bill signed into law by his boss, Obama.

The accusations from U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf. R-Va., came this week in a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

What's wrong with Washington? Read all about it, in "Capitol Punishment" -Autographed copy.

The committee was listening to testimony about China's espionage in the United States and "the violation of the law by the director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy."

Wolf noted he opposed the idea that the U.S. should work with China in any way regarding that nation's space program.

"The Chinese space program is being led by the People's Liberation Army, and to state the obvious, the PLA is not our friend as evidenced by their recent military posture and aggressive espionage against U.S. agencies and firms," Wolf said.

His concern was raised because NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden had scheduled a trip to China to talk about cooperation between NASA and the Chinese army, and Holdren made multiple trips to China for weeks of meetings.

Holdren's viewpoints have been far afield from traditional American perspectives, with his suggestion that America should surrender to a "planetary regime" and his petitioning for a deliberate reduction in the stocks of U.S. weapons-grade plutonium.

"I was … concerned to learn that Dr. John Holdren, head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), had spent 21 days in China on three separate trips in one year – more than any other country. Very little information about these cooperative agreements with China were being provided to Congress and the American people," Wolf said.

"So, I included language in Section 1340 of the Fiscal Year 2011 Continuing Resolution preventing NASA and OSTP from using federal funds 'to develop, design, plan, promulgate, implement or execute a bilateral policy, program, order, or contract of any kind to participate, collaborate, or coordinate bilaterally in any way with China or any Chinese-owned company," he continued.

Report: Sarkozy calls Netanyahu 'liar'

Microphones accidently left on after G20 meeting pick up private conversation between US, French presidents. Sarkozy admits he 'can't stand' Israeli premier. Obama: You're fed up with him? I have to deal with him every day!

(Ynet) — French President Nicolas Sarkozy reportedly told US President Barack Obama that he could not “stand” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and that he thinks the Israeli premier “is a liar.”

According to a Monday report in the French website “Arret sur Images,” after facing reporters for a G20 press conference on Thursday, the two presidents retired to a private room, to further discuss the matters of the day.

The conversation apparently began with President Obama criticizing Sarkozy for not having warned him that France would be voting in favor of the Palestinian membership bid in UNESCO despite Washington’s strong objection to the move.

The conversation then drifted to Netanyahu, at which time Sarkozy declared: “I cannot stand him. He is a liar.” According to the report, Obama replied: “You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him every day!”

The remark was naturally meant to be said in confidence, but the two leaders’ microphones were accidently left on, making the would-be private comment embarrassingly public...snipped

Obama chief of staff Bill Daley gives up some management duties

Ahead of what is expected to be a bruising re-election fight, President Obama is shaking up his White House staff—again.

Bill Daley, who was hired as Obama's chief of staff less than a year ago, is ceding some of his management duties to Pete Rouse, a longtime Obama adviser who initially filled in as interim chief of staff when Rahm Emanuel exited the post in October 2010.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the management shuffle, cast the move as something of a demotion for Daley, who has drawn ire from both Democrats and Republicans in recent months over the administration's handling of budget negotiations and other contentious legislative issues.

Sources tell the Journal that Rouse will serve as "the president's inside manager," while Daley will focus on "managing relations with influential outsiders."

White House officials are pushing back on the notion that this is a rebuke to Daley. One unnamed official told the Washington Post Daley initiated the shuffle himself in order to make the White House as "effective and efficient as possible" ahead of the 2012 campaign...snipped
