The Democratic National Committee announced Tuesday that Charlotte, and not St. Louis, will be the site of its 2012 convention,
ending with a thud an all-out effort by city officials here [St. Louis] to land the event, and the thousands of visitors and national attention that comes with it.

St. Louis and Charlotte were the top contenders among four finalists, a list that also included Cleveland and Minneapolis.

In the end, the decision may have come down to politics. While St. Louis showcased its facilities and civic ardor, North Carolina is viewed as key to Obama's chances to return to the White House.

Rainford said the DNC’s choice to go to Charlotte came down to where Obama could get the biggest campaign boost. Missouri, which will lose a delegate in the next electoral college, could not offer the same electoral advantage as convening in North Carolina.

“This wasn’t a defeat for St. Louis,” Rainford said. “There were considerations out of our control.”

The reasons for picking Charlotte were outlined Tuesday in a letter from First Lady Michelle Obama to supporters in North Carolina.

"Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an 'up by the bootstraps' mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South," the First Lady wrote. "Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds."

"And," she wrote,"great barbecue."

Dan Ponder, professor of political science at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., said holding the convention in Charlotte makes sense for Democrats trying to establish a foothold in new electoral territory. Obama was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win North Carolina since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

“To me, that’s the main focus of Charlotte’s appeal,” Ponder said. “Getting down into the South.”

With so many states rushing to pass that "birth certificate" law, I'm surprised we have not seen anything on how he will overcome that problem for being re-elected.

We know how things operate around Chicago, but their 'rules' do not apply in all the courts.

Having a black mayor and one of the fastest growing black populations in the south didn't hurt either.

With the NC legislature putting the squeeze on Roy Cooper to enforce NC laws, with an eyes to overturning Obamacare, I wonder how this will sit.

I plan to avoid Charlotte at all costs.

I pray to God that good North Carolinians have got more sense than to feel good about this, except for the money they will spend.

I didn't know Zer0 had won every state in 2008 in a landslide election win.

What election was I watching?

Obama Hoping to Win Every State Again in 2012

Before Barack Obama won it in his 2008 landslide, North Carolina wasn't usually considered a swing state, since it hadn't gone to a Democrat since Jimmy Carter in 1976. But with the announcement today that Charlotte has been selected as the host of the Democratic National Convention in 2012, it appears that the party is hoping to keep North Carolina in play once more. For what it's worth this far out (answer: not a lot), a PPP poll last week showed that Obama is still very competitive in the state. He leads Mitt Romney by three points, Mike Huckabee by four points, Newt Gingrich by six points, and Sarah Palin by nine points. As PPP's Tom Jensen notes, the GOP has "no chance at taking back the White House next year without winning North Carolina."

Look at the fun they will have riding 9 miles of an over budget rail line, going to the NASCAR hall of fame and the whitewater park, both of which have not and will not ever turn a profit. Charlotte is a spend now, pay later city. Obama will feel right at home there.

Employment for Crystal looms on the horizon - one less person on the welfare roll! Perhaps Linwood will find a singing gig entertaining the delegates! Stay tuned......Nifong may find a position as well.

I think you have hit upon a great ides, a booking agency!

We could move the entire Hoax to Charlotte. Mr. Obfuscation, Judge Stephens. Bell, Baker, Chambers, Hodge, Levicy, Arico, Burness, Brodhead, the 88, Himan, Linwood, Nifong, and of course my favorite Gottlieb.

The not ready for Prime-Time Hoaxers!

Yes, he will dedicate "He's Still in Fire" to Obama.

Perhaps Jackie Wagstaff could run the agency (isn't the former jailbait without a job currently?) that will market Crystal to convention goers. Nifong, as a former traffic ourt judge could always be her driver as she will need someone conversant with traffic laws so that she can get to her assignations without any difficulties. I am sure that convention security could use a couple of former police officers (Himan and Gottlieb - are you two looking for some additional income?). Now, for a position for Meehan - I have run into the proverbial brick wall.

I am sure the DNC could use Meehan to provide seminars on humility for the delegates and teach them how to not answer questions while talking for hours.

Then again he could collect stool samples as there will be lots of it flying around.
