As many others here have noted, Crystal’s children stand to lose the most by Judge Jones’s decision to return them to their mother.

But not far behind in the losers sweepstakes is Judge Jones himself, for if, as seems likely, Crystal straps herself once again to the down escalator for a joyride that harms or imperils her children, Judge Jones could well find himself munching censure pie, even in the black community.

Solidarity often genuflects to self-interest—unless overawed by stupidity and indolence, which combination (at least to my mind) accounts for far more misery in this world than does malice.

Well it made Drudge! ...and the Washington Post

The Durham Miscreants Game is up.

Now if Judge Beaty starts ruling we can proceed to discovery and that is when the fireworks start.
If Discovery starts can you imagine the number of hooligans checking in?

Durham's cronies continue to "moon the system".

As others have noted, both cream AND pond scum rise, and soon enough Mangum will be in trouble again.
Do we really want to know how she celebrated last night and with how many?

Durham's cronies continue to "moon the system".
.
If you recall, Judge Orlando Hudson approached Nifong and told him that convicting and sending black people off to Jail wasn't the answer. Nifong supposedly agreed.

So, there is a history in that courthouse of Judges dictating to the DA's office in terms of what they should and shouldn't prosecute, and how they should go about it.

I'm willing to bet that Judge Jones made his opinion known to that office to not bring further charges (or these charges) against the Petite, Shy, shining example of Motherhood and everything Good.

.
That look on his face appears like one that would follow some statement like 'you get what you got and you can't do nuthin' about it, so take that'.

I find it rather rewarding that Jackie Wagstaff ends up in the pokey for complaining, about the judge's directive to the jury to go back and debate some more, in front of some of the jury who were 8-4 in favor, at the time, of a not guilty verdict in order to come up with a unanimous decision.... of not guilty.

Jones then handed down sentences of 45 and 43 days, two days shy of the maximum. Since Mangum had been confined 88 days before trial, she was freed.

Couldn't Judge Jones at least put Mangum in the slammer with Jackie Wagstaff for two days?

They could have started a book called "Understanding the Black Household"

It could be a pop-up book, and come with action figures, like a vacuum-cleaner-wielding Mangum.

Go back and read some of Jones diction - makes one wonder what his English grades were in college and law school. It is no wonder that his instructions to the jury were convoluted - his grammar was seiously impaired.

I am saddened, revoluted, angry, horrified.... and somewhat amused. When I asked for a photo of the judge, I could then tell what the verdict was going to be. Remember when we used to say that "Lady Justice is blind", and we saw her statues everywhere, holding the scales of Justice in her hand, but BLINDFOLDED... so we could be reassured that justice was equal and impartial under the law?

Justice is no longer blind. Perhaps it never has been. We humans, being inclined toward evil deeds in the name of self-interest, are always capable of inflicting on others the same pains that have been inflicted upon ourselves. Sadly, we learn that no amount of human retribution ever washes away our own guilt, shame and pain.

So we see the black progressives, being used by each other and the power-hungry whites to rewrite the rules of common decency, civility, and rule of law. And now... in this last example... we will see Jones be recognized for what he is. And we see Crystal's children as the victims of his failure to protect them, because of HIS self-interest.

Does this man have no conscience, or has he sold out to the meta-narrative, or is he just looking for some payback? Time will tell, because actions will tell.

It saddens me to see all the people of Durham County lumped into the same category as these people. I used to live in Durham County. Two of my children were born there. I still have good decent friends there who are actually surprised when I tell them how the rest of the world is now seeing Their World.

In my opinion, part of the fault, and therefore part of the answer to this terrible corruption is that good people just have not looked, have not cared, and have not chosen to pay the price to salvage their community. Wasn't it former Chicago Mayor Daley who said "All politics is local"? And he should know. If that is true, the locals in Durham County need to look at themselves in the mirror and decide if they want to become another Detroit. And they need to start a grassroots, well-funded, articulate, intentional campaign to take back their communities. Nothing else will stop this.

Liestoppers is a powerful force. But this "community" ( and I feel that we are, in a very real sense) can only support and empower the grassroots local community.

"All that it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing".... It doesn't help for us to curse the darkness. Some people who care are going to have to act. It will take time and will not succeed overnight. But if a few who care will start, others will undoubtedly join. But some MUST start.

At Last A Verdict & Other Drama!

(snip)

You may have also heard that Jackie Wagstaff, a good friend and colleague of mine, is in the Durham County Jail for "Contempt".

I think we all know who, for the most part reads Democracy Durham. The few of you who have open minds and visit this blog to learn something and/or engage in reasonable conversation on issues about which reasonable people might disagree I welcome you and thank you for visiting and for your comments. However, I think it is safe to say that the majority of you check out this blog so you can feed your salacious appetites for all things Crystal and as an outlet for unreasoned and bigoted commentary on the important issues this case raises. These same readers are, if I may generalize, likely to also detest Jackie Wagstaff. Maybe I'm wrong about that but I don't think so.

I can almost hear the clucking, tsk tsking, and derisive laughter of those readers described above. Not one to disappoint my audience I hereby serve you up more grist for your ridicule mill:

Jackie was whispering, apparently not softly enough, in court as she, myself, several others, and everybody in the courtroom including reporters, other lawyers, and the many observers that came and went had been doing during the entire trial.

Jackie was about to be let off with a warning by Judge Jones when Deputy Scotty Hodges intervened to tell the judge that we (and by we I mean specifically those of us who were there to support Crystal) had been disruptive during the entire trial. It is true that he had to shush us a few times (maybe more than a few) but he had also sushed nearly everyone in the audience at one point or another. We "supporters" had been talking for several days about how Hodges was singling us out for sushing and other minor infractions that he didn't seem to notice that everyone was engaging in (phones ringing or buzzing too loud is a common problem). In fact Jackie herself earlier that day had spoken to Sheriff Worth Hill and made arrangements to come see the Sheriff to discuss Deputy Hodges' behavior toward our "group".

Everyone in the audience had an opinion about how the trial was going. It was clear from his body language and his facial expression and some muttered comments that Deputy Hodges was not a fan of Crystal's and certainly would prefer that she be found guilty. Besides that Hodges knows all of us from previous trials and from our portrayals in the media. To say that Hodges is an ultra-conservative would be an understatement.

At the very moment that Jackie was about to be given a warning and released (we knew this by the comments of the judge as he was addressing the issue and framing what he was about to say) at that moment Hodges, seeing an opportunity to throw his substantial weight around interjected his prejudices into the process.

I call them his "prejudices" because he abused his position as an officer of the court to paint our little group in the worst terms possible. He exaggerated how disruptive we were and never mentioned that our behavior was well in line with what was going on in general in the audience. Had we been as disruptive as he claimed why were we not ejected or brought before the judge earlier?

(snip)

I'm on my way down to bring Jackie some money and offer support. Later I will be reflecting on many aspects of the trial. Before I go, however, I want to commend Chanel 11 ABC for their short and surprisingly unbiased coverage of yesterday's events. Also, I would like to thank Jessie James DeConto of the News & Observer for his use of the phrase "....Cystal Mangum the accuser in the Duke Lacrosse Rape case.." I have been encouraging the media not to describe Crystal as the "false accuser" or her accusations as having been false in anyway because it is inaccurate and untrue. The accusations were never proven to be false because the case never went to trial.

A FEW HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS

I guess you wrote this before the verdict came in but I wanted to answer you anyway. Yes, Crystal got several offers to plead to lesser charges. The most recent was after the first day of the trial. A reasonable person might say that she should have taken the plea and not roll the dice with a jury trial. I have told her personally that she should seriously consider taking the plea if, in her judgement she felt it would be best for her. However, she says she’s not guilty of the charges and she wanted her day in court. The verdict wasn’t the best that could have happened but it does allow her to have her kids back and her sentence was for time served. So, it worked out for her much the way taking the plea would have. The only up side to doing it this way is that she has put the DA on notice that she isn’t going to roll over and just take anything he offers.

I haven’t heard yet if she and her attorney are going to appeal the guilty verdicts on the lesser charges. I suspect they won’t. We have yet to see if the DA will try to go after her again.

Who the hell is Jessie James DeConto ? At least his first two names seem to describe most of the media in Durham.

cks, chances are Judge Jones is also a honor graduate of NCCU where opinions are free and the degrees are too.

Duke lacrosse accuser free after mistrial

by Jesse James DeConto - Dec. 18, 2010 12:00 AM
McClatchy Newspapers

DURHAM, N.C. - Crystal Mangum, the accuser in the Duke lacrosse rape scandal, is free and will be reunited with her children after a jury deadlocked on the most serious charge she faced from a domestic incident earlier this year.

(snip)

At least I have seen some other versions of this story in which the reporters have the decency to say,
"Crystal Mangum, the exotic dancer who falsely accused three Duke University men's lacrosse players of rape in 2006..."

I don't know why the N&O can't seem to say this...
