Forewoman said 8-4 result was the most recent one. Jones: "So there have been other votes on arson that weren't at 8-4?" "Right."
less than 20 seconds ago via TweetDeck

"Is 8-4 the closest it's been?" "Yes." "So it's been changing with one of the numbers getting bigger each time?" "Yes."

Let's see....they started deliberating late yesterday afternoon, resumed sometime today after 11:00 and then went to lunch at 1:00.

I don't think they have worked on this for very long, yet.

Crystal Mangum verdict may be near

DURHAM Jurors could reach a verdict this afternoon in the criminal case against Crystal Mangum.

The trial has entered its third week, and the jury foreman today told Superior Court Judge Abe Jones it had reached unanimous decisions on five out of six charges. She said jurors were split 8-4 on the most serious charge, felony arson.

Mangum also faces charges of misdemeanor child abuse, injury to personal property and resisting an officer.

If this is a jury of Crystal's peers ( can't image that there are any such) I'm thinking that 8-4 is a pretty courageous vote for Durhamites. I just wonder if the jury members worry about retribution from the seamy supporters of CGM et al. I can't imagine letting a jury like this just go out and eat anywhere they want to when they are in the deliberating stages.

Remember, the state can charge her again after a mistrial.

Where I was from in Mass. the jury wasn't allowed to leave the court building while they were deliberating the fate of a defendant. Except to go home at the end of the day.

What makes you think they would or even if they did, they would actually try to indict her on the correct charge?

Jones: “That's really all I can say to you. I don't think I should say anything else." Two jurors stand, thinking he's dismissed them.
