I am sure chatham or someone else will give a full account later. My cookies are done, my fudge is made and I now have 3 more presents than I had several hours ago. Now- I am tired. Some bullet points below from video CGM said at first that. Milton set the fire, she watch him when he lit it. CGM asked Bond, if she admitted to the charges, would she be charge with a lesser charge? Milton ran because she was throwing things at him. She had a pimple on her face when he hit her and it popped! CGM and Milton had dated when CGM was around 23 yrs. old. They broke up and dated again when she was 25 yrs. old. That’s how long they had been knowing each other. Bond leaves. CGM puts her head back down on the table after she opens up another drink they had brought her and then-all of a damn sudden she starts shouting..... OH! OH! She sets up shouting OH! OH! OMG my back is hurting. She walks over to the door where the guard is...OH! OooooooooH! Please help me my back and head are hurting. I need pain medicine or something for my back. OHHHHHHHHHHH I could not hear what the guard was saying back to her. The Judge who appeared to have been napping while watching the video-took a break at this time. I left. |

I arrived around 10 am and in the absence of the jury the defense once again asked that the tape (DVD) of crystals interview be suppressed. DENIED Defense is very technical. Requests that an officer (didnot get the name) be made available by the prosecution. I did not get the basics of this request but the ADA went into the back room to call that officer to make sure he could bea vailable>}?? ADA called Leslie Bonds to the stand. She was the investigator assigned to the case the next morning, after the charges were made. She arrived at the scene about 8 am. She checked to see if the victim or anyone was at the scene including the other half of the Duplex. A car was in the driveway and Bonds, not having a computer, called into the DPD to confirm the license plate of the car and who the owner was. The defense objected on the basis of hearsay. Just over ruled. Milton was not there but the car had 4 flattened or slashed tires, windshield was damaged, back of vehicle had glass fragments and general car damage to the vehicle. The vacuum cleaner was there also with glass around it. Bond obtained a copy of the lease, photocopied it. SHe also wanted to talk with Mangum to get her side of the story becasue all Bond had was the police report. She went to the interview room with with Mangum and the entire time Mangum was there the inside of the room was monitored with videotape and sound. (this is important for later on) ADA introduced the video as evidence and again the defense objected after being asked by the judge. Judge overruled. The video was turned on for the jury. The first part of the recording show crystal entering the room sitting down and Bond left here for a few minutes. During that time crystal put her head down on her arms on the table and one could hear her saying she was tired. Bond came back anbd brought a soda for her and left again to determine how she was going to interview Mangum. (important for later) The second part was the actual interview. |

Crystal was read her right "anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law". Inside the interview room Bond also had a witness, I believe he was a sargeant. Did not catch his name. Got her another drink. Bond starts that she has no idea what the charges are other than what was written on paper as report and wanted to interview crystal together side of the story. Mangum said that her boyfriend punched her in the face, got an eye injury. Bond said tell me what happened. Mangum told her story starting with the day before. She had headaches. stomach ache and other body pain and asked him to take her to the ER. eventually she ended up having a spinal tap. She went to the ER about 10 pm and got back home about 8 am. Mangum went on to explain her relationship with milton. He mainly stayed with mangum but also had another place to stay if he wanted to. After getting home from the spinal tap milton was fussing, saying stufflike you and your kids have to take some responsibility, mangun really doing nothing to help (this is what mangum is saying milton said to her) just generally complaining about everything. Arguments back and forth, the whole thing escalating. All this was occurring about 11-12 while the 2 oldest kids were at school. Miltpn left to get a haircut about noon, came back about 4:30, laid down and went to sleep. When the 2 oldest kids got home they began doing their homework. About 8 pm milton and the oldest boy went to get a pizza at Papa Johns so the family could eat dinner. Discussion about who was gonna cook for the kids. Mangum said she was sick so the kids could eat pizza also. Mangum did not eat any pizza. argument started again, about the kids. Mangum said that milton was tense. She asked milton, do you want out of this relationship? He said why? do you have someone else? He then started packing his clothes. Then there was name calling back and forth. She said he was no good in bed. Was going to take a picture of his penis to show everyone how small it was. He then hit crystal and the kids jumped on his back to help their mom. Milton grabbed her around the neck, held her about 5 minutes, the kids were screaming and running around. Milton was taking his clothes out and he went outside, Mangum followed him outside and she noticed the vacuum cleaner outside (LOL- my comment) She looked around and saw that miltons car was smashed,Milton was screaming I LOVE YOU2 or 3 times and then he ran away. That is about the time the police got there. She said, I guess I had a crackup. She wondered how the cops got into the house. The cops started fighting with her, was yelling stop, tears flowing now from her eyes in the interview. The cops were saying she was resisting arrest and Mangum was asking why the cops were there. (evidently mangum did not know or remember that one of her kids called 911) There were 2 male cops, one found milton and he was standing behind the cops. Milton came back into the house. The cops just threw her down, no explanation. remember this is whatmangum is saying - not necessarily what happened. |

Investigator Bond saw clothes tossed around outside qwhen she showed up the next morning from the incident. Mangum admitted tossing the clothes outside. ABout the vacuum cleaner used to smash the car windshield, Bond says, I can only assume you used the vacuum on the car. How about the flat tires, you must have gotten real mad because you were hit and your intent was to damage property? Bond next was telling crystal what the charges are saying what one says can be different that what happened. actions of crystal are telling Bond that she wanted to damage miltons property. Crystal is not really responding or answering these comments and questions by the investigator. Investigator bond is talking a lot now. Tell us about the fire department. Where was the fire? Mangum said in the tub. What was on fire? Clothes were on fire. whose clothes? Probably miltons clothes. Mangum was not talking about the fire. Mangum said milton started the fire. Crystal said she saw him start the fire. Then there was something about the 3 year old playing with matches but I did not get all of that. The mangum said.... SO if I admitted to it, it would be for lesser charges? Bond said she needed to know why she did it. How long after you started the fire did miltons car get damaged. ABout 30 minutes. After he left you did the tires and car damage? The Bond got into saying mangum did it because of the beating by milton and mangums injuries. Milton was gone about 30 minutes. During that time mangum did the car and the fire. Only miltons stuff was damaged. Bond asked where crystals kids were now. She said with their dad. Bond says Anything else? I think somewhere else in this station is miltons statement. Investigator Bond then left the interview room. The tape kept rolling. Mangum laid her head down onto her arms on the table. Yells out a little bit. Sniffing going on. Mangum get up, walks around a little bit ( infrustration?) sits back down, hands folded in front of her then puts head back down on table. After a a minute or so, get up again and says can I go tot he doctor? owwww, got some pain, owww, owww, owwww, owwww, up and walking around, says my back, ahhhh, owwww office in the room with her now says to take a seat and they will call someone. Paramedics came. Taoe off. Morning break |

. He Popped Her Pimple. Okay. Someone get her some pain medication. Posted earlier in this thread, Himan and Clayton end up calling Paramedics for Crystal, she is taken to the Hospital. Imagine how much she costs Taxpayers per year. Both days she is to face questioning - ends up being attended to by EMS / ambulance personnel. . . Edited by Mason, Dec 14 2010, 08:51 PM.

After the break. defense stands up and wants to have the entire video shown including the part when the paramedics show up. Da Judge thought there was too much shown already. Judge says not really needed unless bond came back and asked more questions, or part of the original interview was truncated. The short haired defense lawyer wanted the paramedic part shown to let the jury hear about the drugs (medications) crystal was taking or on. I got the feeling thatthe defense was going in the direction that mangum could not remember talking to investigator bond. Defense wanted to show that mangum may have admitted to stuff under the influence of drugs (but see later for addition info) Crystal at this point was looking behind her looking toward Ms Wagstaff for some advice or help Crystal wanted to tell her lawyers something, but nothing happened. Crystal had a worried look on her face.) I am not sure what the defense was trying to do other to let the jury know what drugs crystal was on when talking with the paramedics because the camera was still going. Defense was looking for a drug side effect or drug interaction defense. But the judge would not allow that. Judge said he will allow the defense say mangum was on medications to inform the jury and crystal can testify what she was on which is not necessarily what she said she was on on the tape. Judge indicated quite strongly to the defense that there was no medical expert to inform the jury about drug interactions and side affects that may be claimed mangum had. The judge said if the drug door is gonna be opened and expert is needed or mangum herself can say to the jury what the drugs were doing to her during the interview. (remember that crystal admitted to causing the damage and starting the fire) Judge said to the defense you just dont throw these things up in the air, you just dont throw this out there in front of the jury with out an expert. And of course Ms Mangum does not have to testify because of her 5th amendment rights. On the tape there is no medical expert saying how any drugs will interact. Judge says tape will not be shown, but will be allowed if drug expert comes in. Defense requests a profer?? about that portion of the tape that has the paramedics there. But before they get the camera set u again the judge decides t finish up with Bond the investigator and witness for the ADA. Allt his was done with the jury out of the room and it took a good long time. Bond gets back on the stand. Gives her impressions of Mangum. Mangum was conscious, aware, she answers with thoughtful process, there were a variety of emotions from laughter to crying. It was like a regular conversation and the emotions were appropriate for the conversation. Bond went on that during the interview she did not appear to be in any pain. In fact bond asker her about pain during the very beginning of the DVD interview and crystal only complained about a headache. After that Bond left the room for a while to orgaize her interview. Later Mangum was asked if she had to go to the bathroom, then lots of pain, wiggling on the floor, EMS was called and was asked about meds. According to Bond, CRYSTAL SAID SHE HAD NOT TAKEN ANY MEDS THAT DAY. SHe admitted that she had never missed taking her meds prior to that date of the incident. Thats all for the prosecution and bond. |

The defense. and Bond The defense starts out do you recall what the girl said on the 911 tape? Bond could not recall. After the first appearance in front of the magistrate Bond asked mangum to go to police headquarters to be interviewed, was she shackled? Bond said no, she was handcuffed like every other person in custody being transferred from one place to another. She may also have been shackled but I could not really hear the answer. The defense then asked bond if there was someone with crystal during the entire interview. Bond said yes. Then the defense said well, that is not what the tape shows. After a (comical back and forth) the defense finally realized that even though no one was physically in the room with crystal the tape was always on taping the room. Bond indicated that no interviewee is ever left alone. There is always someone watching the live feed from the interview rooms and just because there is no one "physically" in the room with the accused does not mean they are alone. I saw a light bulb go off over the defense head at that point. The defense was bring up a point that Bonds was not accurately relating to the jury what crystal was doing in the first 42 minutes of the tape when she was "alome" The defense then start to question the accuracy of Bonds comments about crystal moving around a lot and not being quiet, especially during the first 42 minutes of the DVD when mangum was "ALONE" lol. The jusy was asked to leave the room and Bond was asked to eave the room. The defense suggested that Ms Bonds representation was not correct That the tape shows that mangum had her head on the table for most of that 42 minutes. The ADA and the judges both admitted that Bonds also said that she did not watch the whole 42 minutes of that part of the tape because she was also busy preparing her interview of mangum She would only look up at the screen once in a while. The judge then said she was not mischaracterizing because Bond did not see the entire 42 minutes. The request to show the jury all 42 minutes of crystal doing nothing from the beginning of the DVD was emphatically denied by the judge. The jury was brought back in (now it is 1 PM) and released for lunch. The profer was delayed by the judge, they were suppose to do it during lunch, but the judge assured teh defense it would be done before the day was done. Since it was 1 pm and coourt would not meet again until at least 2:30 I left for the day to do stuff I needed to do. I did not go back. I did not get the feeling that this defense was going to put mangum on the stand to testify. I did not get the feeling that the defense was going to bring in a medication expert to testify about drug interactions. I did get the feeling that the defense was struggling. And twice I saw mangum turn around to look at her friends in court sort of in panic. Crystal also was out in the hallway chatting with friends during the morning break, having lots of laughs and giggles. It was a frustrating day for the jury and one could see that on their faces. . Yes, Excellent Chatham! Thank you. As to the Truthfulness of Crystal's statements, ask any Cop, ask any Detective, when a Perp is confronted with their lies, they almost always admit to something lesser than the crime. Okay, you're right, that's not mine, but I didn't steal, it was given to me by this guy Frankie. They come off their story, but lie about the most damaging charge against them or give (false) justification for doing what they did. Crystal's a Veteran, she's not going to go from Lying to Full Truth in one fail swoop, not going to happen. She's providing Justification for her actions. What he did was so horrible that she didn't know what she was doing, etc. They'll never get a full list of Crystal's drugs. I suspect the Harvard Short-haired woman has decided if she's going to put Crystal on the stand or not. If they do, they better have EMS personnel in the room. I don't buy Crystal's story mentioning her kids homework and an argument over who's going to make them dinner. They kids are practically on their own. I'd be willing to bet they "cook" more than Crystal. One other tidbit, Crystal's Dream Team did NOT subpoena Milton Walker. So the jury is not going to hear from Milton. . It appeared to me that based on the testimony and the DVD that milton may have been taking care of the kids a lot more that he wished to. Although I was in the court room today, there may be parts of what I saw and heard that others may have seen or heard differently. I call it personal interpretation of the data presented. lol lol A different person may have a different view of an event. Thanks |

I missed court today, had to do some work. :-( Thanks to all for their great reporting. The ADA's calculated risk just paid off. He's got Crystal on tape telling two different stories. In one of them, she confesses to starting the fire and hitting Milton. In a criminal case, a confession alone is not enough for conviction, it must be supported by some other evidence. What the state has been doing is putting on all the supporting evidence, and there is plenty of it. But, there's more. The state now has Crystal on the horns of a dilemma. Does she take the stand and testify? Or sit silent? If she testifies, which story does she tell, or does she come up with another story? No matter what she says, she gets impeached with the video and circumstantial evidence. Depending on how she testifies, the state has much more to use against her. This is not a good spot to be in for the defense. Walt-in-Durham |
