Both morphine and oxycodone can cause constipation and confusion, and I would be hard pressed to argue that CGM wasn’t full of $h!t.
One of the all time great lines ever posted on this site! Hat tip sdsgo!

I will absolutely second that -- bravo!

Is it me or does anyone else find this line of defense odd?

Crystal and her Dream Team have publicly stated that she was the one being attacked. The 911 tape is in evidence, it is not disputed.

So Police respond to a 911 call, and things don't look right, Crystal wants them to leave immediately without discussion but they have a responsibility to clear the scene. When they ask one of the kids if they are all right, Milton comes out of the Bushes. Now the two Cops, one with each adult, start down the road to finding out what happened and if the kids are safe.

Now, it seems to me, the argument at this point is that the Cops made a crucial mistake by being there for one of Crystal's Classic meltdowns. How dare they. Crystal has escaped Justice forever with lies, manipulation, and a strange ability to have benefactors pony up money on her behalf. She would have continued her record of evading Justice if the Cops just would have realized she was exempt of all normal Law Enforcement practices and procedures. No, these Cops were trying to clear a scene with a call from a minor involving 911, but they were there when she started turning Green and her eyes glazed over with rage.

The problem is clearly the Cops were there when Crystal transformed. Now we can't have that.

Good point,Mason.

Crystal, with her history of mental illness, has some behavioral "issues." When under stress she seeems to either go limp into a semi-catatonic state, or she goes ballistic, which appears to have happened when the police brought Walker in from the cold and back into the house.

However, mental illness does not absolve her of the responsibility for putting everyone (including her neighbors) at risk by lighting a fire in her house.

People like Matherly and VP are just enablers, trying to explain away Crystal's behavior. I don't see how her attorney can make arguments justifying what she did, but attorneys are just paid guns anyway. "Everyone deserve a good defense."

Turning green has been her "get out of jail free" card forever. My bet is she walks this time as well.

Officer Thompson Doesn't Like Being Grilled Like A Suspect!

You just had to be there to see and understand how angry Officer Thompson was when she was cross examined by Crystal's defense attorney Mani Dexter. During "Direct" questioning by Assn't DA Mark McCullough she simply looked like a deer caught in the headlights and like she was about to cry. But when Ms. Dexter challenged her on some of the finer points of her testimony she looked like she wanted to jump off the witness stand and put some serious hurt on her interrogator.

For most of the cross examination Officer Thompson would not look at Ms. Dexter. Instead, she turned her head slightly and looked down. When forced to answer a question under repeated questioning she faced the jury with a stone hard look on her face and spat out the words.

At one point the defense attorney asked a question that went something like this:

Attorney: "The reason you make sure that the two parties involved in domestic violence are separated is that there is a potential for one of them to snap, isn't that right?:"

Officer Thompson had to be asked the question several times (three I think) and each time she refused to accept the word "snap".

Eventually the defense attorney called a side bar with the prosecutor and the judge and the jury was sent out of the court room for a few minutes.

(snip)

This officer looks to be under thirty. She is on the small side and, at the time of the incident in question, she had been with the Durham Police Department for a just a little over a year. So, I think Rookie is a description that fits her status both then and now.

(snip)

More to the point...the jury is seeing all this.

I must be missing something also.

How did she plead? Did she plead guilty? It seems to me that her attorney has admitted
that she committed all the acts specified.

I think a person can plead not guilty by reason of insanity; but can you plead not guilty by reason
of "the police made me do it"?

If she has plead already, then why is there a trial? A trial is to establish facts. The facts
in this case are already admitted.

So why is there a trial at all? What
facts need to be established?

There might one day be questions to police officers to determine if they should be disciplined for
improper investigation; but the officers are not on trial here, and they are not charged with anything.

So why are there any questions to them at all; in fact,

She has, in effect, pleaded guilty. So let the judge decide sentence.

(And, at a sentencing hearing, the issue of police "provocation" as extenuating circumstances
can be brought up.)

Durham court procedures continue to amaze...

I admire the "Rooky's" balking at the word "snap".

What did she actually say in response to the "snap" Q?

P.S. she may have been asked 3 times, but did she "have" to be?

This seems to be standard bullying on cross-examination; Did the prosecutor object to this apparent bullying? Did the Judge put a stop to it?

Court Report from Friday before Lunch - by a Third Party

Officer Tyler was on the stand the entire morning.

Crystal's Defense attorney continually interrupted not allowing him to say that he discussed this with this officer or that officer and they agreed or anything down that avenue. One time it was allowed, providing it is corroborated later by Officer Thompson. The Prosecutor said, reading from his notes, that Mrs. Thompson already testified to the same thing. They were cutting hairs and moved unbearably slow.

Crystal looked nice and wore an expensive business suit that someone no doubt recently bought for her. However, she wore about 4.5" heels with the pantsuit and laughed inappropriately several times. She was also a big clock watcher - as in the Wall Clock.

She had 14 of Friends of Mangum in the courtroom. There was also what looked to be a reporter from NCCU that was very friendly with the Friends of Mangum.

Some things that stood out.

Officer Tyler described the Apartment as small and having a lot of debris on the floor and all around. He mentioned that "lots of debris" about 3 times. He said there was no furniture in the Living room at all, except an outside folding chair that was used.

He said, without being able to put a fine point on it, that something just wasn't right He said Crystal didn't act right.

He said Crystal did the opposite of everything the Police asked her - eventually 4 different Police officers were speaking nice to her and trying to get her to follow direction and she fought every time. She was put in the back seat of the cruiser at one point when the Fire trucks had the Police blocked in and she was told what was going on and told she just needed to sit there and they would be back shortly. They looked and it looked like Crystal was gone, she had dove down under the front seats as best as she could and looked very uncomfortable, she was practically upside-down. The officers put her upright explained nicely for safety reasons they needed to be able to see her - but FOUR more times Crystal got out of the seatbelt and did the Dive.

It took 3 cops to carry out Crystal because she fought them on everything, fought them wildly. Officer Tyler said that Crystal said at one point she had back problems - and Officer Tyler said it didn't look like it to him. He said she really fought them good. The female officer (Thompson) is very small.

Officer Tyler stated the after-hours Magistrate is the one that suggested the charge of Attempted Murder after being briefed on what happened. He said when he heard News reports saying she had been charged with Attempted Murder he thought the News had got it all wrong.

Officer Tyler said the Police on scene didn't know that she was Crystal Mangum until after she had been arrested and just before they went to leave the Scene. This is after the Fire Dept, EMS, and the whole nine yards worked the place. EMS came to find out she was Crystal Mangum just when everyone was leaving the scene when they found medication in Milton's car with the name, Crystal Mangum on it. Up until then, they thought they were dealing with a Marella Mangum, someone he said he found out was the name of her sister.

Back to Crystal acting weird, he said that when they realized there was a fire, Crystal was handcuffed on the floor like 3 feet from a door to the kids bedroom and all 3 kids were in that bedroom. He reiterated the place was very small. He said he went searching for the source of the smoke and opened the bathroom door in Milton's/Crystal's bedroom and he said he could see a fire in the bathtub the size of a good campfire, he said that suddenly something happened and huge flame erupted and even shot out into the bedroom through the door and went along the ceiling. He said he slammed the door shut. He said at that point the smoke was getting dense throughout and you could see the smoke line quickly coming down the walls, this is just outside the bedroom now back with Crystal and Officer Thompson. He said, with her kids just 3 feet away, Crystal never said get my kids out of here or help them or anything. He said it was very unusual.

Crystal's Attorney objected and the Judge dismissed the Jury to the Juror room. Crystal's attorney said that the Right to Remain Silent was created for this very instance, where someone already arrested could remain silent and not have that silence viewed in a poor light. Unbelievably, the Judge sided with the short haired female defense attorney. The prosecutor argued enthusiastically and asked what type of Mother could remain silent while her kids sat (out of sight) but 3 feet away in a house that was burning. He was passionate. The poorly behaved Crystal crowd made faces and shook their heads in exaggerated fashion. The type of behavior is usually not allowed in courtrooms. It was surprising. They talked quietly among themselves but made it hard for others to hear.

Again, thanks to a friend that used to be with us on another forum that had the day off.

Watch how the media report this--probably they will leave out anything which makes
Crystal appear in a bad light.

(If a Duke lax player had been acting like this, it would have been front page
news, dissected by every pundit, and endlessly repeated as proof of
bizarre behavior.)
