We forget sometimes what a spectacle a trial would have been...

Durham Village Light Your Torches

All the Mike Nifong voters and the ethically challenged, who support him, need to be careful what they wish for, because your wish might become your nightmare.

A trial, a trial, that is the chant of the villagers in Durham. Salem, Mass. heard the same chant over three hundred years ago. The chant of the ethically challenged villagers is some variation of the principle that the railroading of three innocent men should be undone in a village court.

(snip)

Oft repeated comments:

"What is wrong with you people? Tell me, why do you not want this case to be decided in a courtroom? Are you afraid? If the boys are innocent, there should be no problem...right???

Let a trial take place, for pete's sake!

This is a pathetic variation of the "two wrongs will make everything right" argument. Mike Nifong manufactured a case out of nothing for financial and political gain, the first wrong. This hoax should then be stretched out into a trial so the first wrong has time to ripen, rot, and stink up the entire North Carolina justice system, that is the second wrong.

Allowing a little bit of corruption in the NC criminal justice system is like allowing a small gas leak. It will end very badly.

The name and reputation of Durham is now on the road to becoming an international joke, a Letterman and Leno punchline, a snarky metaphor for corruption and gross injustice. Being called a Durhamite will take on a whole new meaning, and it will not be pretty.

(snip)

How will lying hoax master Mike Nifong perform when the pressure is on? Will Nifong suddenly become civil, or will 28-years of his mean, traffic court bully, sarcastic behaviour shine through?

(snip)

This case is being followed in other countries. How many international press passes will they allow into the Durham Courthouse? [how many bloggers? How would we actually get accurate reports on the day's proceedings
if we had to rely only on the MSM?]

The international media to start with, as they say, does not have a dog in this fight. But, which dog do you think will become their focus? The evil lying corrupt and newly elected Durham district attorney, or three clearly innocent young men? What story makes better copy in a world that is questioning America's moral leadership?

(snip)

The New Black Panthers can serve as honor guard and ushers to help everyone find their seats. Victoria Peterson can hold a press conference on the courthouse steps after every day's proceedings. If not her, someone will find a Durhamite to do their best Baghdad Bob impression for the cameras. Forget the Cameron Crazies, you will have just plain crazies for the cameras. There will be a new entry in the dictionary under laughingstock: see Durham.

It takes a corrupt village to charge, try, and then burn witches. A voracious 24-7 international news cycle will take delightful notice of the circus trial in Durham village. Durham's corrupted system of law and order will now put on a show in the big top.

Durhamites, put on your pancake makeup, practice your stupid human tricks, light your witch burning torches, and send out a casting call for all the local racists. Get ready, the world is coming to Durham.

Break a leg.

And remember, this was stopped, not by the judicial system, but by ONE tie-breaking vote.

Absent that, this spectacle would have been on the fall lineup.

(And the above article does not cite the likely attendance of gang members with cell phones, taking
pictures of the jury; Nifong's comment that he was unable to protect witnesses, that they had to be "on their own";
the necessity for jurors to reside in Durham after their verdict; etc.)

Think of how easy--how almost necessary--it would be for them to rationalize finding the accused guilty
of at least something, on some counts--rather than go home and say they voted for a full acquittal.

Think of the "expert" commentary before the cameras by such locals as Al McSurely, William Barber,
Lee Coggins, the Dagenharts, John Fitzgerald, etc.

Maybe a few Duke professors thrown in (Holloway, Lubiano)--maybe Dean Wells for a little "balance".

This came very close to being reality...

Of course, not to worry: it would all have been sorted out on appeal in about five years...
