The facebook site "Main Quad Throwdown" has been taken down and there are reports Duke pressured the organizers of this alternative Tailgate to do so. There was another rumor that Duke administrators threatened to cancel the Last Day of Classes celebration if students go overboard on Saturday. The comments section in the Chronicle on the subject is up to 133.
I guess "free speech" only works if you're a professor and member in good standing of the John Hope Franklin Center.

This is "a clear use of corporate power, and a breach, I think, of ethical citizenship....”

Again guys, don't shoot the messenger but word out of student affairs is that they're considering upping the ante: if students show up for an unofficial main quad tailgate, the cops will be called, and people will be arrested and sent to jail.

This is what you get when the "ruling class" has been in power so long they actually detest their charges.

This line of logic is what lead to the Stalinist purges prior to WW2 and the Killing Fields of Cambodia by the Khymer Rouge.

The people were exterminated for their own good, doncha see?

They ought to wear water buffalo pins or cut-outs as a kind of silent protest...

Porta-potty passout leads to ban
Updated Nov 9, 2010 10:48 PM ET

A 14-year old was found passed out drunk in a port-a-potty before a football game at Duke University, pushing the school to permanently cancel student tailgating late Monday.

The unidentified male, who is the brother of a Duke undergraduate, was rushed to the hospital on the school's campus in Durham, N.C., on Nov. 6, and later recovered.

That was not enough for university administrators, however, who called the drunken partying prior to football games unacceptable. The school's football team is 3-6 this season, a slight improvement after nearly a decade of putrid performances.

In an email to the student body about the incident, Duke vice president of student affairs Larry Moneta called tailgating "increasingly dangerous in every iteration."

He referred to the passed-out individual as "a teenage youth." Two campus sources familiar with the situation told NewsCore the boy was 14 years old.

"Tailgate has become an embarrassment -- it has no connection to our football team," Moneta told The Chronicle, the student newspaper. "Now it has to end. I think the notion that a young teenager could be discovered under these conditions just crosses the line."

Duke has long tried to cull the tradition, which can begin as early as 4 hours before noon football games. Only of-age students can transport alcohol into the parking lots, though younger students may attend and imbibe what they do not bring.

Of course, an edict coming from Larry Moneta, who is a phony, probably doesn't help.
Well, Larry does have the ability the discern the educational value of a
"sex worker" sticking a sparkler in their butt and singing the national anthem,
in contrast to a sports team hiring strippers to entertain them.

Students sent to jail for peaceably assembling on the main quad of the campus which they attend? Heh, heh.

Maybe at Christmas, Brodhead will be visited by the ghosts of Presidents past, starting with Douglas Knight (another Son of Eli).
