NBC17.com headlines:

Exclusive: Accuser in Duke Rape Case May Have Been Drugged

An unnamed source close to the investigation of a reported rape near the Duke University campus has told NBC 17 News that someone might have drugged the accuser the night she claims three lacrosse members raped her.

"She may have been slipped a date-rape drug in a mixed drink she was given by one of the lacrosse players shortly after she arrived,” the source told NBC 17 late Friday.

"Her condition is said to have changed dramatically in a short period of time, from being completely sober on arrival to passing out on the floor in a short period of time."

Bombing Figure Is Said to Get Over $500,000

Published: January 04, 1997

NBC paid more than $500,000 to a one-time suspect in the Olympic bombing to avert a lawsuit over comments made by the anchorman Tom Brokaw, The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.

The settlement with Richard A. Jewell, who was working as a security guard in the Olympic Village at the time of the July 27 bombing, was announced on Dec. 9, but the amount was not disclosed. NBC issued a statement saying it agreed to the settlement to protect confidential sources. It offered no apology or retraction.

The Journal, quoting unidentified sources, said Mr. Jewell settled for more than $500,000.

(snip)

''The speculation is that the F.B.I. is close to making the case,'' Mr. Brokaw told the sports commentator Bob Costas. ''They probably have enough to arrest him right now, probably enough to prosecute him, but you always want to have enough to convict him as well. There are still some holes in this case.''

Thirty seconds, ONCE, pointing to Jewell as likely guilty.

Compare that with the serial accusers Nancy Grace, Wendy Murphy; with Geraldo; with all the news coverage this received.

Compare it to "Dancer gives details of ordeal"--a story which not only contained false information, but which
omitted other information which might have brought the accuser's story into question.

Considering ONE media outlet had to pay at least $500,000 for ONE thirty-second broadcast impugning the reputation of an innocent defendant...

And how liable should someone be if they deliberately disseminated false information, manipulated statistics and gave innuendo to the media, in order to further incriminate persons they knew to be innocent for
a crime which never happened?

Multiply that by the number of persons involved (to include family).

Multiply that by the number of incidents.

Multiply that by the number of days it took to bring them to that admission.
