The Obama administration doesn't have even a fleeting grasp of economics. They just threw in about 280 million to establish a battery plant which will employ 80-90 people. Now they have to create a market for the batteries by paying almost 20% the purchase price of the car. The sales target is 60,000 vehicles. The dent this will make in a market which in 2006 was 7.6 million cars is meaningless. Almost 70% of all electricity in the US comes from fossil fuels. So let's review. You have a car that simultaneously manages to be expensive yet unappealing. It will capture less than one percent of the market while getting 70% of it's energy from fossil fuel. Except when it running it's ICE engine burning gasoline which has to be premium. Oh, in a final insult to the customer the batteries will need to be replaced at a cost of $10,000. The Chevy Volt is a fashion statement, not a vehicle. |

I really do hope it succeeds, but the competition from the Chinese will be intense. IMHO The electric hybrid cars to watch for will be made by the Chinese Manufacturer, BYD. This is the company Warren Buffet owns 10% of. It was created in 1995 with 40 employees and now employs 150,000. It is an international conglomerate that started with superior battery technology and has expanded into cars, semiconductors, and alternative energy. BYD is one of the world leaders in cell phone batteries. Its Dual Mode F3 car looks to be a winner, It can run on gasoline, be recharged at a station, plugged in at home, or be recharged slowly by its solar roof panel. Each of these methods have their own benefits and drawbacks. At the heart of BYD is an chemical engineer, Wang Chuanfu(China's richest man), who created a low-cost ferrous-iron electric battery. It weighs more that a Li battery but is cheaper to produce and will last the life of the car. It estimated the F3DM will be introduced in 2011 in the USA and it cost about half of the Chevy Volt, $22,000 vs $41,000. Last year 300,000 of them were sold in China. By comparison Chevy plans to sell 10,000 next year. We may already be too late with the US Electric Car. Of course the question will be quality, durability, and safety. As for cost the Chinese win hands down and that is the real problem facing the USA, competitive costs. As like the once poor quality Japanese cars became high quality so will the Chinese cars. Our country is watching our manufacturing base leave the USA in most every industry. Watch the video of the F3 DM http://www.byd.com/showroom.php?car=f3dm Edited by Baldo, Aug 1 2010, 09:59 AM.

When Sir Paul visited the WH, Obama should have sung this song to Sir Paul, after all Paul I believe wrote it. I am sure Paul would have loved being chauffuered around in the Volt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ts2U1mkfz4 |

We might as well buy a Volt, because we are paying for them anyway... |
