Will Washington's Failures Lead To Second American Revolution?

By ERNEST S. CHRISTIAN AND GARY A ROBBINS
Posted 06:30 PM ET

The Internet is a large-scale version of the "Committees of Correspondence" that led to the first American Revolution — and with Washington's failings now so obvious and awful, it may lead to another.

People are asking, "Is the government doing us more harm than good? Should we change what it does and the way it does it?"

Pruning the power of government begins with the imperial presidency.

Too many overreaching laws give the president too much discretion to make too many open-ended rules controlling too many aspects of our lives. There's no end to the harm an out-of-control president can do.

Bill Clinton lowered the culture, moral tone and strength of the nation — and left America vulnerable to attack. When it came, George W. Bush stood up for America, albeit sometimes clumsily.

Barack Obama, however, has pulled off the ultimate switcheroo: He's diminishing America from within — so far, successfully.

He may soon bankrupt us and replace our big merit-based capitalist economy with a small government-directed one of his own design.

He is undermining our constitutional traditions: The rule of law and our Anglo-Saxon concepts of private property hang in the balance. Obama may be the most "consequential" president ever.

The Wall Street Journal's steadfast Dorothy Rabinowitz wrote that Barack Obama is "an alien in the White House."

His bullying and offenses against the economy and job creation are so outrageous that CEOs in the Business Roundtable finally mustered the courage to call him "anti-business." Veteran Democrat Sen. Max Baucus blurted out that Obama is engineering the biggest government-forced "redistribution of income" in history.

Fear and uncertainty stalk the land. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke says America's financial future is "unusually uncertain."

A Wall Street "fear gauge" based on predicted market volatility is flashing long-term panic. New data on the federal budget confirm that record-setting deficits in the $1.4 trillion range are now endemic.

Obama is building an imperium of public debt and crushing taxes, contrary to George Washington's wise farewell admonition: "cherish public credit ... use it as sparingly as possible ... avoiding likewise the accumulation of debt ... bear in mind, that towards the payment of debts there must be Revenue, that to have Revenue there must be taxes; that no taxes can be devised, which are not ... inconvenient and unpleasant ... ."

Opinion polls suggest that in the November mid-term elections, voters will replace the present Democratic majority in Congress with opposition Republicans — but that will not necessarily stop Obama.

A President Obama intent on achieving his transformative goals despite the disagreement of the American people has powerful weapons within reach. In one hand, he will have a veto pen to stop a new Republican Congress from repealing ObamaCare and the Dodd-Frank takeover of banks.

In the other, he will have a fistful of executive orders, regulations and Obama-made fiats that have the force of law.

Under ObamaCare, he can issue new rules and regulations so insidiously powerful in their effect that higher-priced, lower-quality and rationed health care will quickly become ingrained, leaving a permanent stain.

Under Dodd-Frank, he and his agents will control all credit and financial transactions, rewarding friends and punishing opponents, discriminating on the basis of race, gender and political affiliation. Credit and liquidity may be choked by bureaucracy and politics — and the economy will suffer.

He and the EPA may try to impose by "regulatory" fiats many parts of the cap-and-trade and other climate legislation that failed in the Congress.

And by executive orders and the in terrorem effect of an industrywide "boot on the neck" policy, he can continue to diminish energy production in the United States.

By the trick of letting current-law tax rates "expire," he can impose a $3.5 trillion 10-year tax increase that damages job-creating capital investment in an economy struggling to recover. And by failing to enforce the law and leaving America's borders open, he can continue to repopulate America with unfortunate illegals whose skill and education levels are low and whose political attitudes are often not congenial to American-style democracy.

A wounded rampaging president can do much damage — and, like Caesar, the evil he does will live long after he leaves office, whenever that may be.

The overgrown, un-pruned power of the presidency to reward, punish and intimidate may now be so overwhelming that his re-election in 2012 is already assured — Chicago-style.

• Christian, an attorney, was a deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury in the Ford administration.

• Robbins, an economist, served at the Treasury Department in the Reagan administration.

This editorial from Investor's Business Daily states what was unthinkable just a few years ago. There must be strong feelings in the business investment community to be able to run with this.

I really don't think the DC Dems understand what is happening in this country. They better wake-up real soon.

I dunno... Perhaps it is better if they DO NOT understand. We need a backlash - much bigger one than that caused by Jimmy the Peanut. And the less the 0bamites anticipate it, the more damage they (presumably) will suffer. What we need is a Reagan or two - but where do you find them? :think:

Something is horribly wrong with this man, Obama.

The female Governor of Michigan economic policies crashed and burned in Michigan - but Obama brought her in immediately as an economic adviser.

Barney Frank had played a historical role in the pilfering of Fannie and Freddie - he got it all wrong and oversaw a mortgage lending crisis that will be felt for 40 years. Still, Obama put Frank in charge of the TARP, he was involved with guiding the stimulus, and after the Stimulus failed and the banks moved the TARP money overseas - Obama has Barney F. for the point man in the financial regulation overhaul.

Something is wrong.

Obama & the Congressional Leaders must be that they believe they know better and are so used to getting away with doing what they want, they won't listen to the people and the reality of what is happening in the country.

Of course the MSM being in the tank for Obama there was little to check their abuse of power.

"...banks moved the TARP money overseas"

Just for the record, the only TARP money I know that went "overseas" was that paid out by AIG. A move by the man now running the Federal Reserve.

Of course that is just another example of what Obama brought along with him. I had little faith in Bush, was even disappointed in much he did, but he did NOT surround himself with idiots. Sometimes I wonder if the Emperor did that just so he'd always feel better about himself on a daily basis.

My guess is that 0bama is much dumber than most people give him credit for. And he is living in a fairly complicated world (the world of the POTUS), which he does not understand AT ALL. So everything he says and does is somehow weird, irrelevant, etc. Presumably, his transcripts reflect his intelligence, and are kept secret... Such a person will surround himself with strange people (which he has done), and will say strange things whenever he goes off his teleprompter. To cover all of this up, a canard is spread that he is a genius.

Occam's Razor supports this explanation. Also, remember the movie "Being There"? It all fits.

Could it be he is a mean unfeeling SO*.

Barack Obama seems to have a pattern of using ceremonial or stately events as opportunities to ambush and humiliate people. This behavior is unpresidential and reveals a vindictive streak that makes Richard Nixon look like Mister Rogers.

I think you are overestimating him. Of course, he is a thin-skinned, vicious, low-class SOB. But the WEIRD, OUT-OF-WACK aspect comes from straightforward stupidity. One often meets such people among faculty at top-rung universities, especially in humanities and around.

Something is wrong.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I am waiting for someone to write the "Second Declaration of Independence", who will write it? Now is the time to write such a document, so we may be able to execute revolution through the polls, not violence. After watching some of the people the voted for Obama, that maybe congress is right, they know what is good for them, but for me I am tired of being one of them. I got an e-mail today saying they were having Obama birthday parties all over the country, to these people Obama is the Emperor and he knows what is good for them. One such party is at a restaurant very near my home, even asking you to RSVP, who was the last president that had birthday parties all around the country? Is this was we have evolved into, a country that praises it's POTUS, as a King or God?

The Emperor's Birthday Party!

Some 'me, me, me' on a national level - how sweet.

As for the "Declaration of Independence", I'm not sure we need a new one, just to fight for the old one. It would help if they'd edit the "interstate commerce" clause of the Constitution in some manner that would restrict what all the government can "regulate" by using it.
