http://newsbusters.org/blogs/alana-goodman/2010/07/23/cnn-host-calls-crackdown-bloggers-wake-sherrod-incident-something-s-g CNN Host Calls for Crackdown on 'Bloggers' in Wake of Sherrod Incident: 'Something’s Going to Have to be Done Legally' By Alana Goodman Fri, 07/23/2010 - Should there be a "gatekeeper" regulating internet bloggers? In the aftermath of the Shirley Sherrod incident, that's what CNN promoted on July 23. Anchors Kyra Phillips and John Roberts discussed the "mixed blessing of the internet," and agreed that there should be a crackdown on anonymous bloggers who disparage others on the internet. "There are so many great things that the internet does and has to offer, but at the same time, Kyra, as you know, there is this dark side," Roberts said. "Imagine what would have happened if we hadn't taken a look at what happened with Shirley Sherrod and plumbed the depths further and found out that what had been posted on the internet was not in fact reflective of what she said." But Phillips replied that the mainstream media "can't always do that." "There's going to have be a point in time where these people have to be held accountable," Phillips said. "How about all these bloggers that blog anonymously? They say rotten things about people and they're actually given credibility, which is crazy. They're a bunch of cowards, they're just people seeking attention." (snip) Phillips wanted to go even further, asking if "there's going to come a point where something's going to have to be done legally" about anonymous bloggers. "There has to be some point where there's some accountability. And companies, especially in the media have to stop giving these anonymous bloggers credit," she said. (snip) CNN's two regulation-happy reporters, think the Sherrod situation can help bring attention to the "necessity" of blogging reform if she brings a defamation lawsuit against Andrew Breitbart. According to Roberts, Sherrod has "the power now and she also has the profile to maybe bring this into a new light, so we'll see where this goes." |

Just how accountable are the MSM when they defame someone? (How about a Newsweek cover with mug shots of persons still presumed to be innocent? But one way or another, it appears that the establishment media (and perhaps the govt.) really, really want to shut bloggers down--whether it be through some kind of "fairness" doctrine, or else lawsuits, or giving everyone a single identifier code, or through restrictions on what can be posted. |

Did Breitbart fire her? Was that not a public speech? Wouldn't that make her a public figure? Did Breitbart hold a gun to her head and make her say what she said? |

And I about forgot. The first time I watched that part of the speech the main thing I got out of it was how much the audience seemed to like how Sherrod treated that white person and liked her sending him to "one of his own kind". |

The problem in Sherrod's situation was reaction by the idiots for CYA without consideration for the complete context of what was said (which still has problems). The MSM is guiltier of out-of-context reporting than any other source I've seen, maybe some exceptions for comments most consider the source on anyway. CNN - loves THEIR freedom of speech! |

PROMINENT BLOGGER CALLS FOR FEDERAL ACTION ON CNN's LIES Dateline - Ruston, Louisiana - July 23, 2010 Walter Abbott, a prominent blogger in the blogosphere today called on federal authorities to look into the widespread practice of Cable News Network (CNN) fabricating news stories from whole cloth. CNN is a subsidiary of Time-Warner, Inc., a NYSE-listed company. "CNN just makes it up as they go along," said Abbott. "This practice of allowing people to broadcast anything they want on cable TV without government control has got to stop," he added. Abbott publishes a widely-read blog that covers North Louisiana politics and is also widely published on FRee Republic.com and the Liestoppers Meeting bulletin board. He is one of the most knowledgeable experts on the notorious Duke Lacrosse Frame that occurred in 2006 in Durham, NC. |

I agree totally. That was first and foremost Breitbart's point in showing the video. |

You go, abb. Before we start regulating the blogs, let's start a truth in reporting law in congress to stop the MSM from being an arm of the current administration. |

This is just totally preposterous. They're grasping at any straw to try and shut down bloggers (but only those bloggers they don't agree with.) Are they suggesting that the internet be policed, on the lookout for clips taken from longer videos to make sure that what's posted is not out of context? What about the MSM when they publish only a short quote from a longer speech? Should this be policed every time the MSM uses a quote in an article or newscast? It ticks me off that this was suggested BUT it's laughable. |

Perhaps these fools should concentrate on the FACT the World's Largest Economy doesn't have a budget, Congress doesn't read Bills before voting on them, and the DOJ won't prosecute the NBPP voter intimidation! BTW who in the hell fired her? The White House! Way to go abb. Love the Press Release! |

"I worry about my child and the Internet all the time, even though she's too young to have logged on yet. Here's what I worry about. I worry that 10 or 15 years from now, she will come to me and say 'Daddy, where were you when they took freedom of the press away from the Internet?'" --Mike Godwin, Electronic Frontier Foundation |

My guess this is why Breitbart was, IMO, set up-- to crackdown on the blogs. |
