Man shot outside Durham courthouse

Witnesses say the incident began with some kind of altercation inside the courthouse building. The groups involved then came outside and the fight continued down the street.

Someone in a nearby vehicle started shooting, and one of the bullets hit the ground and then bounced up and hit a man in the leg.

He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Reports say the incident may be related to a gang case currently going on inside the court building, but that has not been confirmed by police.

KNOXVILLE - Shortly after one of his veteran prosecutors pleaded guilty today to driving under the influence, Knox County District Attorney General Randy Nichols suspended him without pay for a week.

Assistant District Attorney General Kevin Allen admitted in Anderson County General Sessions Court he was driving drunk last month when he was arrested in Oak Ridge.

He received a standard sentence of 48 hours in jail, 24 hours of litter pickup and a $350 fine.

His driver's license was suspended for a year, but he may apply for a restricted license that will allow him to drive to work.

A charge related to his refusal to take a breath-alcohol test was dismissed as part of a plea deal.

Allen will lose a week's pay for the Feb. 26 incident in which Oak Ridge police say he was arrested after an officer saw him driving erratically.

In a release, Nichols said Allen acknowledged he was under the influence and should not have been driving.

"I have every confidence Kevin has learned a lesson he will not forget and such a mistake will not be repeated," Nichols stated.

Allen has been with the DA's office for more than a decade and has successfully prosecuted a number of high-profile cases. He had just won a murder conviction in a fatal robbery attempt outside a North Knoxville laundry the day before his arrest.

More details as they develop online and in Friday's News Sentinel.

Man shot near Durham County Courthouse

DURHAM A man was hospitalized after being shot near the Durham County Courthouse late Thursday morning.

The incident started at about 11 a.m. when a fight broke out inside one of the courtrooms, Durham County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Mike Andrews said, who did not immediately know how many people were fighting or which courtroom they were in.

Deputies escorted the involved parties out of the building through the courthouse's Parrish Street exit.

The victim was walking west on Parrish Street when shots were fired from a gold-colored Hyundai, Andrews said. The victim was struck once in the lower part of his body. He was taken to Duke University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The area around Church and Parrish streets is closed off as the investigation continues.

No arrests were made as of early Thursday afternoon.
