In the original book the epilogue is three pages but in the later update (for the paperback?) it is 26 pages. Mangum herself returned to the obscurity from which she came. She en-rolled in some classes at NCCU in the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters, with Jesse Jackson's organization paying her tuition, according to a reliable source. But she hastily withdrew in February or March 2007 after learning that the state attorney general's office was planning to check on her status at NCCU as part of its reinvestigation of her rape allegations. The definitive April 11, 2007 finding that her accusations were false also ended her financial support from the state's victims' support fund, which Nifong had used to set her up in a house or apartment in or near Chapel Hill for part of 2006. After returning to Durham, Mangum lived with relatives and her (now) three children. How she paid her bills and supported her children after being dropped from the victims' support fund was unclear. I guess it needs yet another update... |

My guess is that a good portion of the "victims' fund" comes from federal sources, and using federal money fraudulently is a felony. The idea that no one could charge Crystal or Nifong or others with federal crimes is a lie. The feds chose not to pursue that course because of the racial politics, period. Once again, we see how selective prosecution rules in Washington. Federal prosecutors look for political benefits when pursuing prosecutions, not justice.
