It said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.5, was 21.7 miles (35 km) deep, relatively shallow, and was centered 21 miles (33 km) northwest of T'ai-tung. Taiwan uses the Richter scale to measure earthquake intensity. The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 6.5. The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 8:18 am (0018 GMT), was around the southern city of Kaohsiung at a depth of 5 km, the Central Weather Bureau said.
