Houston Rodeo Parade was today; Come on down!

Olbermann, et al can cast all the aspersions they want, but I'm sitting here, watching the replay of thousands of horses, riders, wagons and floats parade through downtown Houston. MY Senator looks comfortable riding a horse- and I bet he knows how to shoot a gun. I love watching this stuff 'cause it's so easy to tell which riders actually DO ride You don't have to be born here to be a Texan, but if you don't appreciate the heritage and the independent spirit that has always driven our state, there are forty-nine other states you can try out. Some of the trail rides ride ninety-two miles to be here for the opening of the rodeo. None of the wagons have rubber tires and all are cherished possessions, carefully maintained for next year. (Granted, RVs and catering trucks have replaced camping out overnnight, in many instances, but I wouldn't disparage anyone for not wanting to sleep in the snow, sleet and rain we've had.) Over the years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has given out over 25 MILLION DOLLARS in SCHOLARSHIPS- not too shabby.

If you ever get a chance to come to Houston for the rodeo, it's a treat- and so much part of our heritage.

TM, the Rodeo is always so much fun and I so wanted to go this year. Lots and lots of fanfare! Was John Cornyn riding the horse? I've seen the trailriders ride into town a few times and it is so much fun to watch. I saw Elvis perform twice at the rodeo and even have childhood memories of seeing Roy Rogers.

I love my Texas heritage, too, and my daughter tells me that real cowboys are disappearing but you couldn't tell it from down here in central Texas. You still see plenty of men in cowboy hats and many people wear boots, including me.

A few Texas facts: If Texas were a country it would be the 10th largest in the world. It would have the 12th largest economy in the world based on GDP. It would be the 5th largest oil and gas producing country in the world. It's the only state with its own power grid. DFW Airport is bigger than Manhattan.

Texas has an interesting history and one of the early settlers from North Carolina wrote his autobiography and you can find it online. It's called "Evolution of a State" by Noah Smithwick. I highly recommend it.

I'm pretty sure it's fell a few spots in the past decade.

Not that it makes much difference.

I still have vivid memories of the Rodeo with Roy Rogers that I saw in Houston when I was about 5. (These may have been two events, but that doesn't matter.)

Everybody from the show was there. Trigger Jr performed with Roy, Buttercup with Dale, and I got to go back to the stables and meet Trigger! In person! ....(My parents always teased me about saying it like that. "Meeting Trigger in person." :) )

Alas, I did not win the child-sized Nellybelle (the jeep). I have always been disappointed in that!

I very much enjoyed my 3 years in College Station. I count Texas as one of my home states. (Army brats get to have more than one.)

No need to be redundant, Baldo.

Brisket is BBQ.

No wonder we are such kindred spirits! I remember going to the "Fat Stock Show and Rodeo" at the Coliseum, and rushing to the rail, as Roy Rogers rode by, sticking my little five year old hand out to touch his.

Yes, John Cornyn was on horseback. He reminded me of my dad and grandfather a little, in that he obviously knows his way around a horse, but he looked dapper in a jacket and wore a "dress" cowboy hat. Folks, my grandfather was of an era when oil deals were done on a handshake at the coffee shop in the Esperson building and no one would have DARED renege. That's the culture in which I grew up, sadly it died long ago.

Uh, no. I cook brisket all the time, but I don't barbecue it. And, not all barbecue is brisket or even beef. Sorry...
