Santiago airport to be closed for 72 hours; approx. 78 known dead so far; hundreds trapped; tsunamis of 100+ feet possible in southern Pacific; Hawaii tsunami warning issued (expected 15 ft. waves there) ![]() http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=119625§ionid=351020706 "Earthquake experts say that the quake in Chile was 1,000 times more powerful than the maqnitude-7.0 earthquake that caused extensive damages in Haiti on January 12, killing at least 230,000 people. A magnitude-8.8 earthquake can yield an amount of energy comparable to that of an explosive with an estimated 10 gigatons (billion tons) of TNT." Edited by Quasimodo, Feb 27 2010, 09:18 AM.

Let me do some thinking "out loud" here. The earthquake hit at 3am local time, which is 1am Eastern. The tsunami watch map lists 15 hours for the possible wave to hit Hawaii. 1 am Eastern = 8pm Hawaii 8pm + 15 hours = 11am Hawaii time (which is 4pm today Eastern time) OK. I'm not so confused anymore. Now I know how long I'm keeping an eye out for the people of Hawaii. |

130 ft. waves hit San Fernando Islands off the coast of Chile (woman interviewed on Chilean TV says islands were inundated) --------------- From New Zealand (10 ft. waves expected) : ChileQuake National Warning: Tsunami Threat to NZ Update 7 03:15HRSNZDT 28 Feb2010 Tsunami update The first wave to arrive in New Zealand will be in the areas around Chatham Islands (Waitangi) at approximately 0705 NZDT, Sunday 28 February 2010. The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest. Strong currents and unusual tidal effects may continue for several hours. Wave height refers to maximum water level relevant to the normal sea level at the beach. This does not take tides into account. Based on historical events it is expected that the greatest wave heights will occur between 6 and 12 hours after the initial arrivals. The National Crisis Management Centre in Wellington has been activated. The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) and scientific advisors are closely monitoring the situation. People in coastal areas should: Stay off beaches Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities) Share this information with family, neighbours and friends Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities Please do not go sightseeing |

They get smaller; but, local tides and bays, etc., may play a part (causing the influx of water to back up and its level to rise) Consider the Pacific like a big bowl of water which has been shaken; the water will slosh around in all directions before it finally subsides. |

People in low lying parts of Banks Peninsula are advised to prepare to evacuate their homes by 8am on Sunday because of the tsunami warning. Waves up three metres high could arrive along the east coast of New Zealand following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile. Civil Defence says the first waves are expected in the Chathams at 7.22am on Sunday. Banks Peninsula residents may not be able to return hole for at least 24 hours and should take with them any essential medicines and baby needs. As well, they should take important documents, a batteries-powered radio and torch bottled water, and extra clothing and footwear. Civil Defence warns the first waves to hit the entire east coast of New Zealand and may arrive later than forecast, and may not be the largest. It says strong currents and unusual tidal effects may continue for several hours. Acting National Controller of Civil Defence Alan Walker says there are already many reports of people sightseeing in Canterbury. They are warned to stay away. Farmers are advised to move stock to higher ground. RadioNewZealand |
