I think people need to back it down a bit and reflect upon what purpose a forum serves. It's for discussion which will inevitably lead to disagreements. A group of people constantly agreeing with each other will be boring and is inherently dishonest. It can't happen unless people adopt some form of self censorship.

People need to keep their own feelings in perspective on boards. The person on the other end may have just as strong feelings and both can be valid depending on what end of the spectrum they focus on. In the case at hand Joan looked at the actual content of the invitation and Caroline focused on the back story of the invitation and how the BSU leveraged it to make demands. Neither could be called factually wrong.

Every one needs to develop a little thicker skin and realize when you wake up tomorrow your life will be completely unaffected by what happens on this board. Your kids will still need you, your spouse will still love you and the dog will want it's bowl of food.

Based upon Quasi's excellent research (as per usual), I'd say that two former posters are owed an apology (not me, I am perfectly capable of fighting my own battles and I didn't take a hit in the "recent unpleasantness"- yes, I intentionally used that phrase).

Would someone please find a clerical collar emoticom (perhaps we should use the "pope") when it's time to award the Liestoppers self-righteousness award.

"Stereotypical caricatures may depict African Americans as being inordinately fond of watermelon."

Such caricatures never saw our family photos when I was a child eating watermelon from end to end, seeds and all, slurping up the juice and loving every minute of it. Watermelon was a family treat. We would get in the car and drive to an open air market, my father would select the melon and we would drive home, cut it up in the back yard on a table and the rest is history. I will never understand how certain innocent things from my childhood have become associated with racism. I also could never understand why my parents salted it before eating, either. The vision of it brings a smile to my face.
When I was a kid, the guy at the market would cut a wedge shaped slice out of the melon so the customer could see how ripe it was. My father always gave that slice to me to eat on the way home and it is one of my most loving memories of him. My parents had a large family, one income....so a lovely cold watermelon in the heat of summer was a huge treat.

Over the years when I would see watermelon associated with black people, I simply thought that everyone liked watermelon as much as I did.

I am right there with you.

And damn if anyone is going to tell me my life experiences are invalid because of some political code.

Speaking of watermelon........ every Sunday during the summer, when we went to grandma's house after church. She would sometimes cook, fried chicken, real mashed potato's, brown gravy, corn on the cob, collard or turnip greens and homemade biscuits to sop the gravy. Or she would fix a huge pot of chicken and dumpling.

After the table was cleaned and everything put away all the grandkids were waiting for watermelon. My dad- an only child, would get out the knife and brown paper bags to lay the watermelon on. These were the long seeded watermelons bought off the back of a pick up truck. ( we always has 2 melons)

Anyhoo, my dad would cut the two melon's into long slices.Us kids sat at the kitchen table slurping the watermelon, seeds and all.My grandma made us put a towel down the front of us, so we wouldn't get the juice on our Sunday clothes. When we got through,my brother would clean out the others rind. He would eat down to the green part.

If we stayed at grandma's long enough, my grandpa would bring out the crank ice cream maker. It was always a tiff over what kind of ice cream it was going to be. It was either, banana, peach,or vanilla.
Then us kids would argue over- who's turn it was to set on top off the ice cream maker while grandpa cranked it.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread with memories. Tomorrow would have been my father's birthday and this month is one year since he went over the rainbow .....and I still miss him so much. :cryi:

Carry on....

When I think about Nooses, I think about the Old West.

When I think about Watermelon, I think about my Father, who loved it.

There is somehow a denigration when others impose their associations on us, overriding our own. Demanding the world be viewed the way they prefer to view it.

.
I love watermelon, esp. when it's ice cold. I think of my southern relatives and summers in Maryland, though they always put salt on it. I prefer mine plain.

Right on Mason. I think of watermelon and endless summers and family and love. They are not going to turn something beautiful into something ugly for me.

Yes, you use only the white part of the rind. Peel the dark green away and trim all of the red. After that, it is a multi stage process of cooking and brining and soaking in a sweet syrup. I wish I could make them, but I can't find her recipe.

When I was a kid, she collected all of the watermelon rinds from the community picnic (at the Little League baseball field) and spend 2 or 3 days making the pickles. (I got to help eat the excess red parts, from the pieces that hadn't been touched really.)

Oh, they were soooo goooooood!

Watermelon pickle is wonderful! There used to be a great country inn near my farm here in Maryland that had watermelon pickle on the relish bar (no salad bar.....instead there were olives, cottage cheese, relishes, fruit, etc). This place is now an upscale yuppie restaurant and the relish bar and the watermelon pickle is long gone. Typically the rind is pickled with cloves and cinnamon....so it is a sweet pickle.

Cripes people - how are we missing this AWESOME retort from whoever is this Jiggaboo Jones? Good God, what a steaming in-your-dumb-face reply to all the people who've highjacked his party!

So - some black guy/gal wants to host race mixing parties that poke fun at stereotypes. Sounds great, seriously. You white folk wear shoe polish and we niggas'll wear something laughable from the Caucasian stable of weird stuff (plenty to choose from). For the right type of people this could be a great night of fun.

For the professional troublemongers employed and enrolled on today's campuses, it was whatever they damn well said it was.

Thanks mucho to whoever tracked down this link. It puts this whole thread and the original intent of the party in the proper context.

Folks, we done been suckered....
