The rationale of Obama's health care gabfest was theatrical. The bipartisan aura was intended to support the effort to ram Obamacare through the House and the Senate on a purely partisan basis, capped off by the use of reconciliation in the Senate. White House spinmeister Dan Pfeiffer holds that the event provided "a good discussion and even though people periodically lapsed into talking points, it was honest, substantive and thoughtful." Pfeiffer's role in the production is to maintain the suspension of disbelief necessary to take the play seriously.

The Republican speakers (Lamar Alexander, Tom Coburn, Jon Kyl, John McCain, Dave Camp, John Barrasso, and Paul Ryan) did an excellent job of addressing the flaws inherent in Obamacare. When they were most effective, Professor Obama sought to shut them down or rule them out of order. Despite Professor Obama's vaunted intelligence, this was one class in which roughly half the students were smarter and at least as knowledgeable as the teacher; the other half provided comic relief. The dog ate their homework.

All the Republicans who spoke deserve kudos. They showed the teacher up as a pretender. In one way or another, they both elicited and pierced Obama's pomposity. The remarks of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan (video above) stole the show in this regard. Among other things, Ryan discussed the fiscal legerdemain that permeates the Obamacare project. Ryan deconstructs the fairy tale at the heart of Obamacare.

Obama was not amused. Obama treated Ryan's performance as lèse-majesté, an offense violating his royal dignity. Professor Obama seethed as Ryan spoke; he badly wanted to throw Ryan out of the class. Instead, he gives Ryan the evil eye and appears to give Ryan the finger. It's a moment that reveals something of the animus driving the project.

Via Hot Air and Weekly Standard.

UPDATE: Glenn Reynolds points readers to the screen shot of Obama during Ryan's remarks, captured by Stephen Green. And Michelle Malkin reviews the play in her column today, while Tunku Varadarajan distills the spirit: "After this six-and-a-half-hour civics lesson, let us now return to the Leninist mode: that of crushing the opposition."

How presidential. What did he do with the booger? Put it under the conference table?

He needs a Booger Czar.

Brett Baier had a funny clip at the end of Fox News this evening - I think it came from the Jimmy Kimmel show. Had Obama falling asleep as his summit.

It is notable that Obama's main achievements have never been fought for - they've either been given to him or else attained without fighting. For instance, Obama's entry into Harvard Law was attained because of his race. Ditto Obama's selection as President of Harvard Law Review, again by virtue of the color of his skin. Finally, Obama's two offices that he attained in Illinois - State Senator and U.S. Senator - were BOTH achieved with no opposition. Simply put, this man has never developed the skills to either earn something on his own or to engage with others to earn it. He's simply had it handed to him.

For instance, if you or I had to compete for entry into Harvard, we would have had to have studied hard, gotten our grades up, submitted papers, etc. - i.e., done something to get in. But not Obama - he just leaned back and sailed in because of his color. Ditto with President of the HLR. Others had to get their grades up and produce papers to prove they were fit. But not Obama - he just leaned back and sailed in because of his color.

And his two elected offices. The first one - State Senator - had NO opposition. Obama went to court and by virtue of arcane law had ALL of his opponents disqualified. He ran as the only person on that ticket. Which means he didn't have to go out and engage with the people against his opponent, he didn't have to talk with his opponent's supporters and convince them that they should vote for him instead of the other guy. And he did not have to do the political thing which is give and take - 'okay, I'll promise you this if you'll do that', etc. He was not required to do anything of the give and take. Likewise with his U.S. Senate run - by pure luck, the Chicago machine discovered an Achilles heel with his opponent (divorce records which were embarrassing). The opponent then dropped out and Obama just sailed through. Again, no give and take because there was no one to give and take against - he was the only choice.

So now he's supposed to negotiate about the Healthcare Bill? How? What on earth exists in this man's character that prepares him for such a thing? The answer is nothing. He's an arrogant loner who's never worked for anything - he's either sailed through on the color of his skin or the lack of opposition. He's never worked for anything. He's never had to give and take - he just takes. There is nothing in this man's character (arrogance - "I won") or his past (awards and offices handed to him on a silver platter) that makes him capable of negotiating now with opposition. He has neither the experience to know how to negotiate nor the temperament to even want to try. He's unfit to do so.

And yes - that IS the 'finger' that he gave to Rep. Ryan.
