Duke legal fees for all purposes: 2004-2005 --- $4,316,301 2005-2006 --- $5,879,719 2006-2007 --- $10,207,165 [double!] 2007-2008 academic year --- $17,040,989 [four times that of 2004-2005] 2008-2009 [not available yet; shall we presume at least the same sum of $17 million would not be unreasonable?] Is a figure of $30 million in legal fees thus far (which is conservative, since it does not figure in the new suits against Duke’s insurance co. or much of the expenses for Pressler’s renewed suit) out of the ball park? Plus there were settlement fees for the Duke three. How much is Duke spending on trying to avoid having its officers give depositions? How great is the current shortfall in the Duke budget? ($125 million?) How much of that shortfall would have been met, if these added legal expenses had not been incurred, and if those alumni who traditionally gave to Duke had not suspended doing so as a result of the lax case? |

Well, we begin to know what Brodhead costs. |

By the way, National Union Fire Insurance Company filed an objection to Magistrate Judge Trevor Sharp’s recommended ruling in the Duke University insurance case. They disagree with his decision sending National Union and United Educators to arbitration. Justia Docket Item 53 |

One just wonders what the BOT is doing? Can they be so far removed from reality, so insular, that they just keeping moving on? Perhaps Duke cares more about themselves than their students. |

They had their chance to dump Brodhead in 2007 but stood by their [poor excuse for a] man. It's all about character, and not just Brodhead's character. |

They are. Nothing will change because the BOT keeps replacing itself with like-minded folks. Where is the NC Atty Gen? Isn't Duke a charitable trust and therefore entitled to protection by the AG from looting and squandering money. |

Is there any way to get the same info for the City of Durham? That would be most illuminating. |

Yes, there is. All someone has to do is go to City Hall and ask for the documents. North Carolina has a strong public records law. It should be used and used frequently. Nothing scares the bastards more than someone rooting in what they consider to be "their" paperwork. http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/Statutes/StatutesTOC.pl?Chapter=0132 http://www.rcfp.org/ogg/index.php?op=browse&state=NC |

Is it possible to go further back in Duke's records? This trend line appears to be devastating; however, when making comparisons, the starting point is critical. (See "global warming"). It would be nice to go back maybe ten years to really emphasize the increase. (Think "hockey stick"). |
