http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/os-seaworld-orlando-shamu-injury-20100224,0,942688.story Park guest Victoria Biniak told Local 6 that the trainer was a veteran of SeaWorld and had just finished explaining to the audience what they would see during the performance. At that point, Biniak said, the whale came up from the water and grabbed the woman. "He was thrashing her around pretty good. It was violent,'" Biniak told Local 6. The whale "took off really fast in the tank, and then he came back, shot up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started thrashing around, and one of her shoes flew off." She said sirens went off and everyone was forced to leave the stadium. |

Sad. I would never get in a pool with anything bigger than me and a name like "Killer!" |

They're called 'Killer Whales' for a purpose! They kill. There's a reason why these animals have never been domesticated - it's because their wildness can never be tamed. If an animal has had centuries, even thousands of years in which it's never been tamed, than it means it can't be. Observe the lessons of history. Or suffer the consequences. |

It seems the whale involved in the tragic death of the trainer, Tilikum, had been involved in other fatal incidents in the past. "'We recognized he was different,' said Chuck Tompkins, head of animal training at all SeaWorld parks... A SeaWorld spokesman said Tilikum was one of three orcas blamed for killing a trainer in 1991... Tilikum was also involved in a 1999 death..." http://www.philly.com/philly/wires/ap/news/nation/20100225_ap_whaledragstraineroffplatforminfatalattack.html |

The 1993 movie "Free Willy" was make believe. Unfortunately it was also misinformation in the way it portrayed the lovable young boy & the whale. I agree that Killer Whales belong in the ocean. I would be PO too if I was stuck in a cage all day. |

The media keeps saying this whale "was involved" in other deaths. It's a WHALE! It's not "involved" with anything. It does the stuff whales do. Whales cannot form criminal conspiracies. They do not need to lower their voices like they've just uncovered the aquatic equivalent of Amy Bishop. If this snow (and my imprisonment) continues I'm going to have to unplug every television in this house. |

What can one really expect when one pens in animals? I find zoos abominable for that reason - no living organism should be caged for any reason. No, I do not have a pet because I am not home and I refuse to gate a room or leave an animal out in the cold all day alone. |

cks - I totally agree with you. The saddest and most painful sight in my life when I was in Europe in the early 70's and I walked into the zoo in Madrid. There, in a tiny enclosure, I saw a polar bear going through a hellish routine that just did not stop, it just kept going on and on. He would go up to a spot in that tiny enclosure (I remember it was to the left) where he would then stop and bow his head down, up, down, up - then he would spin around and go in the opposite direction for about 5 feet (it was such a small area) at which point he would stop, whirl around and return back to the same spot where he would again bow his head down, up, down, up, etc. I saw him do that over and over and over again - and it just broke my heart. This magnificent beast was psychotic, just like a mental patient who's slipped over the edge and does mindless motions repeatedly. I ran out of that zoo in tears. |

I have a good friend who does "healing touch " with animals. She said that the trainer must have done something to that whale at some time or another that the whale took exception to. About that I do not know, but something must have made the whale "go over the edge". |

Orcas actually do kill for revenge, and kill for sport, etc., iirc. So do a few other animals, but for some reason, it isn't talked about much. Porpoises also kill for fun, iirc. |

The story keeps changing, so much so, I'm suspicious. With every new telling, they place more blame on the deceased. ABCnews today even offered this account to make the 12,000 lb kitten the victim - Brancheau's long hair "swatted the whale in the face." I see a campaign to minimize what happened. |
