It took me all of two minutes to discover the article from the New York Times that I linked to above. I’m confident that the many sleuths on this board could find other items, including one I spotted that indicated Columbia’s acceding to Obama’s being one of its graduates, if they put in but a small fraction of the effort they routinely show in pursuing other questions. Columbia is a large, impersonal, urban university, which housed a relatively small percentage of its undergraduates when Obama spent two years there. It appears he was not much of a joiner. I’m not at all surprised he does not evoke reminiscences from more than a few contemporaries. From my own experience as an instructor in a liberal-arts college that prided itself on keeping course enrollments small, I can say without too much embarrassment that even my best students are but blurs to me today—and have been so for many years. In a house overstuffed with books and papers, old grade sheets and student papers stood little chance of evading the curbside reaper. And as a parent who put three children through colleges of reputation, I can say that getting information from these colleges even after winning acknowledgment from their registrars’ offices that I was the same person who signed all the checks still ranks on my fun-o-meter with cleaning out a grease trap. My experience is hardly unique; my best friend just submitted a letter to his daughter’s university, a letter she signed authorizing his speaking to university officials and his getting information about her grades and her tuition-and-fees account. I am not denying that much about Obama’s schooling remains murky. Nor I am denying that Obama might have good reasons for wanting that information buried in the archives of the Knights Templar. I am suggesting that carrying on here as if Obama has fraudulently represented himself as having attended Columbia discredits this forum. Edited by Duke parent 2004, Feb 11 2010, 07:00 AM.

If I ever carry on like that, be sure to let me know... What credit do we have to discredit? We aren't ABC News... The forum is not perfect and neither are it's members. Nor are they expected to be. Nor are they limited to talking about absolute truths. Much of the content of this board is speculation, and necessarily so. There would be precious little conversation if we could not speculate. Had we not proceeded with limited info during the height of the LAX case, where would we have been? It wouldn't be Obama attending CU that might be interesting, makes little difference whether he did or didn't to me, but the performance, the organizations, the classes taken, etc... Those might be interesting. I have not made it a secret that I think Zer0 is an idiot...
I believe the NYT's rep is currently lower than ours for accuracy of info. Why would anyone use such a distrusted paper as a source for facts? Edited by LTC8K6, Feb 11 2010, 07:13 AM.

The speculation that “something happened” at that Duke lacrosse party in March of 2006, though from an evidentiary point of view far more difficult to refute than the speculation that Obama never attended Columbia, deserved to be skewered on this board and elsewhere. How many folks here would nevertheless defend it as having contributed in a healthy way to a “conversation” that needed to be aired? Even an idiot (and, alas, Obama is not one) deserves to be portrayed accurately. Although I long ago cancelled my subscription to the New York Times and have instructed my personal representative to submit my obituary to Liestoppers and not to the Times, I must concede that the Times does get it right now and then. |

Yes, the NYT did such a bang up job there...so good that it was hard to tell they were trying to refute it... There's nothing in the NYT article about Columbia/Obama that I need to know, btw...and much of it seems to be from Zer0's own book... No meat, just broth. Which I have already complained about regarding Obama's education and background... Here is one example of many regarding simple reporting by the NYT: http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2009/07/024142.php Edited by LTC8K6, Feb 11 2010, 08:23 AM.

"...I can say without too much embarrassment that even my best students are but blurs to me today" I haven't looked at much more than what has been posted about Zero over time here, qualifying that with having read and hosted quite a few documents relating to the birth certificate (for the blogger/attorney which brought the initial lawsuit into the news). I'd expect people coming out of the woodwork to grab their 15 minutes of fame resulting from having been somehow associated with the POTUS in the past, especially if they're of the same mindset when it comes time to cast their votes. With Bill we learned he did not inhale and found out what "is" is... With W we know about his past drinking habits, and that he was a pilot safely grounded within the nation... With Zero I'd anticipate hearing about an old girlfriend (for a night or two?), the professor that claims to have taught him the politics leading our nation presently, the guy that worked at the sandwich shop Zero bought lunch at weekly... a few anyway. He is quite the unsolved mystery, even if the limited records provided are true and accurate. It does not change a thing as far as who he is now, it's just that we are not certain if he is who he evidently wants us to believe he is. ADD: I read the thread as unanswered questions many are curious about. If they will be answered is in doubt, but sharing what we finds and opinions on it is a good thing IMO. My only interest has to do with why 0bama is willing to spend a whole lot of our tax dollars to not make public his history? Of course that history includes from birth up through Harvard Law school. Even a well intentioned professor type person evaluating a potential candidate for President or Chancellor of a prestigious university would want to know everything about the candidate before allowing that person to make policies that students, faculty and staff, as well as the community, would have to live with (i.e hire the person). Having been part of a process where some individuals were blinded by the shining light off the gum rapper, in hind site, that group think allowed a not so intellectually endowed control seeker to take the reins of power. Too little knowledge too late. Five years of incompetence. John Kerry refused to release much of his military records. Due to that refusal I assumed he was a coward. |

I think the point is is not whether he attended Coulmbia or not. It is as CKS says "Too little knowledge too late." To me the question is what did he study? |

Let’s assume we learn what courses Obama took at Columbia almost thirty years ago. Then what? Should we presume that he uncritically absorbed everything he read or heard in those courses? My elder daughter, only ten years out of Cornell, took a course there from Martin Bernal, author of the notorious Black Athena, which tome has fueled much of the nonsense that has come out of black-studies departments. She admits to remembering virtually nothing from that course--aside from saying that Bernal’s lectures were captivating! Today she is a lawyer in a large firm, most of whose partners are liberals. Yet she’s a dues-paying member of the Federalist Society and on some issues is more anarchistic than her old man--even though I do not encourage her in this direction. One of my best friends flaunted his leftism all four years I knew him during our undergraduate days. Today he celebrates John Adams and the Founders. I haven’t the foggiest idea how or why he came around. Perhaps raising three daughters and paying for their college educations had something to do with it. |

Excellent. But your daughter isn't currently driving my country off a cliff... Why can't I learn any of this stuff about Zer0? Did he take classes that reflect his current politics, or has he gone his own way since college? |

Hey, my daughter’s spending could well bring us in from that ledge. My larger point is a simple one: What don’t you already know about Obama’s politics that would be “explained” by a list of the courses he took in his two years at Columbia? As I’m sure you know, Columbia has for at least the past fifty years avoided being mistaken for Grove City College. Nevertheless, I’m willing to bet that some of its graduates voted for Reagan and the Presidents Bush. Damned if I could tell you, though, just which ones did. . . . |

And I would be able to judge this how...? I don't have the information, remember? And it isn't just Columbia, anyway...he said again, becoming exasperated...

Oh, Lord. Duke Parent - please, with my blessings, submit your resume to Eric Holder as his assistant. It will be a match made in heaven. When a terrorist is dragged off the plane in Detroit, with his undies still smoking, you will then be able to rush to his side and with a comforting hand on his shoulder, turn to the shaken passengers on that plane and chastise them with your learned speech. "Oh, let's assume we learn that this man flew to Pakistan and actually met with Al Qaeda some months ago. Then what? Should we presume that he uncritically absorbed everything he read or heard in those meetings?" Yessiree, THAT will put those passengers in their place. Edited by Carolyn says, Feb 11 2010, 11:35 AM.

Let me have the info about the President of my country, and let me worry about what I make of it...and whether I put one or two of my big feet in my mouth over it... |

LTC, you are NOT putting your 'two big feet' in your mouth. You're instead putting them down the righteous path that the media and others refuse to tread - the path that leads to the big Zero's past. He's hidden it somewhere - and we, the American people, have the right, indeed the obligation, to find its hiding place. Keep walking, LTC! |

Fill in the list any way you wish. I’m arguing here that the causal connections so many here apparently think self-evident are anything but. Very few of us—and I’m willing to cut some slack for even the odious Obama—are mere reflections of our schooling. And if Obama is that rare exception, do you not already have a pretty good idea of his agenda? |
