I'm glad the bastard's dead.
His Republican opponent, Bill Russell, a superb and honorable man, has issued a dignified request to hold off on Murtha until a few days have passed. That is dignified of Russell to do that in regards to his campaign - but I see no reason to adhere to that myself.
Murtha was a crook, a fat pig of a liar, and a traitor who accused innocent Marines of murder. When caught in his lie, the pig hadn't even the human decency to admit he lied. Murtha was also, hands down, one of THE most corrupt pols that existed in Congress and that is saying a great deal.
Death doesn't sanctify anyone - it just makes them dead. Death doesn't erase their sins either; it merely means the jerk can't keep on committing them because he's now going to be six feet under.
Like I said, Murtha was a lying, sleazy, pork-addicted old pol who was as corrupt as they come. He was also a lying traitor who stabbed innocent Marines in the back. That's what he was when he was alive and dying doesn't change it. And dying doesn't change either the way I feel about him. Like I said, I'm glad the bastard's dead.
Everyone has a few redeeming qualities - that said, as a politician, Murtha was all that you said, plus some.

Yeah, not enough house votes now...
They will get around that, though...

Condolences to the Murtha family. Him . . . not. so. much. A heart as cold as ice and corrupt as they come, hope he's staying real warm where ever he is. One less political hack from PA.

I was reluctant to say this because you never really want to speak ill of the dead. But, yeah, I'm glad that bastard is dead and there are a couple of others he could have taken with him AFAIC.

Dan - I'm shocked - SHOCKED you would think a shy timid little thing like me would ever let people know how I really feel. Lawsy - I'm going to have to go lie down now with a cool Marine on my chest.

Special election in May, I believe. If the Dems don't change the rules again.... Your right, the governor of PA, has 10 days to set a date for a special election. The press up here anticipate May, like you said. The republican, that ran against him in 2008, barely lost. Russell in the latest polls had a lead over Murtha for the 2010 election.

Great Post Carolyn, I was going to say, good riddance to bad rubbish. I was a Marine and Marine Reservist for over 30 years. The Marines will give him an honorable burial, because he was a Marine. I think all those years in congress made him an addict to power, kind of like he was drunk with power. If this isn't an example of government corruption, I don't know what is. Had he stayed out of congress, he probably would have died as a proud retired Marine. I think he spent more time in congress, then in the US Marines, so much so he turned on his own, calling his fellow Marines, "cold blooded killers", with no apology after they were vindicated. The man who could have died as a hero, instead he died as an old politician, who forgot where he came from.

Dead or Alive describes him only as "Long-serving congressman from Pennsylvania, known for his liberal use of earmarks in directing funds to his district."

Of course one shouldn't speak ill of the dead, and I shall not here. But it cannot be denied he was polar opposites to my political beliefs and likely most everyone who posts on this board. I shall simply say - as I said when liberal columnist Molly Ivans passed three years ago - he (she) was a worthy opponent.
