I really have no words for this very weird person...this political use of someone's death is deplorable...

Note the crowd's uneasy reaction. They're Obama fans, but this is too weird even for them.

SCOTT adds: Almost as routine and almost as interesting are Obama's misrepresentations regarding the health insurance angle to the story.

Via Instapundit.

MORE: A reader adds: "This has really become a farce. Can you imagine even a rock star saying something along those lines...'And she was buried in one of our concert tees...' I would only expect to see that in some scene from This Is Spinal Tap."

"...As to why he failed to mention her name? Hard to believe its a privacy thing, seeing the St Louis Post profile. It's just Obama's utter absence of a common touch."

Obama knew who she was.

Melanie Shouse, was a devoted MoveOn Council leader in St. Louis. I received a mass emailing about her death last week from Moveon.org (somehow I got on their distribution list).

Perhaps he thought if he didn't use her name, we wouldn't find out that he was making it up about her not having health insurance...

He has taken to invoking Haiti and Haitian in weird ways too.

I've seen him do three times.

He doesn't know what the word 'mammogram' is. That's why the dumb creep pauses there, he's trying to think of the word and he can't. So he stumbles on with that 'the kind of exams she needed'. But he doesn't know what the word 'mammogram' is. The moron.

But worst of all, that tee-shirt reference is sick! I have seen pathological selfishness - but this takes the cake. This absolutely takes the cake. It's all about him. Sick. Sick. Sick.

I can understand how one can be speaking and can't remember the word one wants to use - it sometimes happens to me when I am lecturing. However, the whole story was really weird - what was his point exactly?

I am sad when anyone passes away, but something sounds strange about the way this is explained. The Obama T-Shirt remark is indeed weird. I just can't imagine using that as a caring person.

Yes Barry, we hate sausage making...

I got a letter — I got a note today from one of my staff — they forwarded it to me — from a woman in St. Louis who had been part of our campaign, very active, who had passed away from breast cancer. She didn’t have insurance. She couldn’t afford it, so she had put off having the kind of exams that she needed. And she had fought a tough battle for four years. All through the campaign she was fighting it, but finally she succumbed to it. And she insisted she’s going to be buried in an Obama t-shirt. (Laughter.)

But think about this: She was fighting that whole time not just to get me elected, not even to get herself health insurance, but because she understood that there were others coming behind her who were going to find themselves in the same situation and she didn’t want somebody else going through that same thing. (Applause.)

How can I say to her, “You know what? We’re giving up”? How can I say to her family, “This is too hard”? How can Democrats on the Hill say, “This is politically too risky”? How can Republicans on the Hill say, “We’re better off just blocking anything from happening.” That can’t be the message that the American people are delivering. Yes, they’re nervous, they’re anxious, they’re in a tough time right now. The thing they want most are jobs. They really don’t like the process in Washington, the sausage-making. That part I understand. But I know that they don’t — but I know they don’t want to just offer nothing to the millions of people in America who are in the situation that that woman was in.

That’s what we campaigned on. And we are going to keep on working to get it done — with Democrats and I hope with Republicans and everybody else in between — to bring down costs, to end the worst practices of the insurance industry, to finally give every American the chance to choose quality, affordable health care. We are going to keep on working to get it done.
