It has begun its last leg. The Shuttle Endeavour is being moved from its hanger at LAX to the LA museum My relative has joined the crowd and it has turned into a moving block party through LA. TV crews are out & Jimmy Kimmel is covering it. She said everyone seems to be acting like a happy 12 year old in awe of this great space-ship ![]() Space shuttle Endeavour making 12-mile trip to LA museum LOS ANGELES – At its prime, the space shuttle Endeavour circled the globe at 17,500 mph, faster than a speeding bullet. In retirement, it's crawling along the streets of Los Angeles at a sluggish 2 mph, a pace that rush-hour commuters can sympathize with. Endeavour's two-day, 12-mile road trip to the California Science Center where it will be put on display kicked off early Friday. Rolled on a 160-wheeled carrier, it left from a hangar at the Los Angeles International Airport, passing diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs, and reached city streets about two hours later. Hundreds of spectators, some with pajama-clad children in tow, waited in the predawn darkness. In unison, they held up their cameras and cellphones and gaped as the 170,000-pound Endeavour inched by with its tail towering over streetlights and its wings spanning the roadway. It made stop-and-go progress, with some halts to check its balance and to prune trees in its path as it crept past strip malls and storefronts. In a massive feat of parallel parking, the shuttle was backed into a shopping center parking lot in the Westchester neighborhood around 5:30 a.m. -- later than expected....snipped http://www.foxnews.com/science/2012/10/12/space-shuttle-endeavour-embarks-on-12-mile-trip-to-la-museum/ It's final destination is the California Science Center http://www.californiasciencecenter.org/ Edited by Baldo, Oct 12 2012, 04:35 PM.

IMO the whole thing is a big waste of money, They should have shipped it to Houston where it belongs. |

Where are the four Space Shuttles? Discovery - National Air and Space Museum just outside Washington DC. The Enterprise - Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York. The Endeavour - California Science Center in LA The Atlantis - Kennedy Space Center in Orlando They are all worthy, as was Houston. IF LBJ was still alive we know one would have gone to Houston In defense of Socal all six of the Space Shuttles were assembled in Palmdale CA an hour outside of LA and many of its components were built in the LA area which has a great concentration of Aerospace Industries. Sadly we lost Challenger & Columbia Besides the LBJ Space Center has numerous space vehicles already. They have the lunar rock collection, the Saturn V which is really spectacular, and the space shuttle Explorer mockup which is being transferred from Kennedy there. Also that Texas votes Republican probably didn't help. Edited by Baldo, Oct 13 2012, 03:10 PM.

Well if it makes you feel any better the Museum is in the middle of the USC Campus which is probably as well guarded as any campus. They take security really seriously. |

LA Times has a wonderful collection of Photos of the move. http://framework.latimes.com/2012/10/12/space-shuttle-endeavour-2/#/0 I noticed in the photos the crowds change from white to black to brown and all colors as it moved through neighborhoods in its journey. One thing was in common was the awe & happiness at the sight of this great space-ship. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned. |

Beautiful short video on the move of Endeavor Mission 26 The Big Endeavour A very special thanks to the City of Inglewood, Chief of Police Mark Fronterotta, Lieutenant James Madia, Sergeant Dirk Dewachter, and to the Men and Women of the Inglewood Police Department. None of this would have been possible without them. This project was only made possible by the help of a truly amazing and talented timelapse team which included; Joe Capra, Chris Pritchard, Brian Hawkins, Andrew Walker, Ryan Killackey and myself. This truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity that we are so happy and honored to have been be a part of. The endeavor started on Thursday night and went on until Sunday night, with very little sleep to no sleep. The only thing that kept us going was pure love of the art and adrenaline. One thing that stood out the most for me, while I was shooting, was the people of Los Angeles. It was so powerful to see the excitement on peoples faces and the pride of their home town. No matter how many times I would see the Shuttle it would never get old. This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget. My hope is that this film will show you the amount of dedicated people and teamwork that it took to get the Endeavour to its new home. Enjoy. http://vimeo.com/51621640 Edited by Baldo, Oct 17 2012, 08:49 PM.
