Could be an emissions testing checkpoint in route to the Super Bowl. Imagine the revenue this could create!

Three people were wounded this morning near Iberville and Bourbon streets, the New Orleans Police Department reported.

nopd-badge.jpgAccording to investigators, Eighth District police responded about midnight to a call of shots fired. They found three people shot, all with non-life threatening injuries: a 25-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and a 36-year-old woman. Their names were withheld pending notification of relatives, NOPD spokesman Officer Janssen Valencia said in a news release.

The victims, who told police that they were standing with a crowd when they heard gunshots and observed that they had been struck, were treated and released, Valencia said.

Eighth District Detective Maggie Tarling is in charge of the investigation. She can be reached at 504.658.6080.

Police ask that anyone with information on the shooting to contact Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 807.903.7867. Callers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn as much as $2,500 for tips that lead to an indictment.

There's not much going on now. A big truck in front of a building.

I didn't watch the entire game. My hairdresser today said one of Manning's receivers dropped the ball in the end zone. When I was watching the game, I noticed the Colts' receivers dropped a few balls thrown at them. Too bad for the Colts and especially Manning.

I'm too disappointed to comment except to say decent law abiding fans celebrate with gusto but do not destroy property or hurt people. The NO fan base speaks for itself. I remember when the Green Bay Packers won their first super bowl in 29 years (I believe the year was l996), there was a joyous celebration at Lambeau Field in the middle of the night and not one incident of violence or property destruction. That's the way it should be and most likely the way it is most of the time.

New Orleans Saints celebration comparatively short on mayhem (Only one stabbing, triple shooting)

By Brendan McCarthy, The Times-Picayune
February 08, 2010, 6:23PM

On a night when the city celebrated the New Orleans Saints' victory in Super Bowl XLIV to its maximum capacity, crime in New Orleans largely subsided, with citizens overcome by camaraderie and unbridled glee.

The New Orleans Police Department reported only two violent incidents -- a triple shooting and a stabbing -- in the city as thousands took to the streets to celebrate the Saints' Super Bowl victory. Both of the incidents took place shortly after midnight in the French Quarter.

"Considering how many people were there, it was a good night," officer Garry Flot said.

The championship celebration in New Orleans was tame compared with postgame mayhem in other cities over the years. After the Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2004, dozens of people were arrested for rioting, and a college student was killed when a car was driven into a crowd of revelers.

Countless people clogged the Quarter and the surrounding areas, with revelers eager to share drink and cheer at the city's most popular party spots. Police had beefed up patrols and staffing in preparation for the crowds.

The shooting took place about midnight at the corner of Bourbon and Iberville streets. Officers found three people -- a 25-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and a 36-year-old woman -- bleeding from gunshot wounds to their legs, police said.

Paramedics transported the trio to LSU Interim Public Hospital in stable condition.

The victims, who told police they were standing with a crowd when they heard gunshots, were treated and released, according to a NOPD news release.

At 1:35 a.m., a man told police he was stabbed near Bourbon and Conti streets. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, said Jeb Tate, spokesman for New Orleans Emergency Medical Services.

The city's EMS department also increased staffing to deal with a surge in calls for service.

"With no incidents of civil unrest, the vast majority of our calls were related to Saints fans celebrating a little too much," Tate wrote in a news release.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting or stabbing to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 807.903.7867.
