Didn't see Wade's interview, but read this:

Edwards' attorney, Wade Smith, said in an interview that Edwards wrestled with the decision to come forward but took so long to do it because "he's not the only person involved in this."

"It's a complex family situation, and he had to keep in mind that other people have concerns and worries about it," Smith said.

Smith said there would never be a logical explanation for why Edwards initially denied being the father. But he added that Edwards was "very pleased" to finally set the record straight.

"To say that life has been hard for John Edwards for the past year would be an enormous understatement," Smith said. "His life has totally fallen apart. It's been a very difficult time for him. He recognizes that he has been at fault."

Brit, the link is posted on this thread.

Wade Smith did indeed seem sad. He saw promise in Edwards once upon a time..I'm sure. It must be difficult to absorb how this once shining young family authored their own debacle.

Yes, we all have empathy for their tragedy. But tragedies do not just happen to saints...nor do they necessarily create saints. Shallow, self-serving people endure tragedy as do the truly evil. Tragedy is not a resume builder. It does not automatically embue one with integrity or wisdom.

We absolutely regret the loss of their son and respect their grief. . It does not mean however that we must then RESPECT their policiers or owe them election to office. Elizabeth's cancer is about her physical health..not her moral health..or her husband's.

By the way, remember the painter that set our fence on fire. I kept hiring him out of nothing but sympathy for circumstances in HIS life. I'm lucky the house is still standing.

It's long. Can't watch the whole thing, but confirms he hired Wade cause he is one of, if not the best CRIMINAL attorney in NC. John is in big trouble. And it's not about being the Daddy.

Extremely well put, Joan.

Excellent points in the latter part of this thread by Abb, cks, and Truth Detector too.

A Prison sentence can be closure.

Acc Esq,

I think about what John Edwards' policy on child support would be if he was asked at a town hall or debate. I think about what he would like to mandate for others.

Like Al Gore, I'm sure he believes he could (or he has) "offset" his love-child like Al offsets those Private Planes and steak dinners.

These are the kind of people that, all too often, end up in high public office.

I do not think we need to forget how the Edwards ran off the neighbor because he was a Republican and was shooting his gun on his own property. That action alone tells what the E. Edwards and J. Edwards are all about.

That is a sordid tale. No wonder Edwards hire Wade & Jim, he needs the best.

I keep thinking that the "natural justice" that both the Edwards "deserve" is the sex tape going viral on the internet.

Even though I'm not in NC, I have despised Edwards because of the way he got himself elected to the Senate in the first instance.
I remember that election because one of my neighbors gave a fundraiser for Faircloth and Trent Lott was the guest of honor. I remember that the street was actually washed because of some construction going on and it really irritated me that no one but this neighbor could ever get the streets washed and most particularly because he was always greasing some palm of a politician.

I don't remember the "dirty tricks" in the campaign but do remember that almost immediately "pretty boy" set his sights on the Oval Office.

If you have details, I would like to hear them again.

Let's face it. The majority of the clients of most defense attorneys are sleazy, if not guilty. So in that sense John Edwards is not much different than most of the other clients of Wade Smith and Jim Cooney.

The lacrosse case was an aberration where the defense lawyers could be on the side of the angels. What did Joe Cheshire tell Jim Coonery to get him involved in the lacrosse case? "You will never have a more innocent client!"

The standard response by defense attorneys is that every criminal deserves a good legal defense. But I myself would not sleep well at night if I were in their position.

Cheshire, Cooney, et al took went about as far as they could with RCD's defense. A lawyer can only go so far - that is if he/she plans on earning a future living in that state.

They were brilliant and with a little luck also able to make Nifong agree to have the AG take a look at the case. They knew at that point it was a matter of time and the case was over. By that time Nifong had been exposed in the Dec. hearing and had no choice but cooperate and begin to concentrate on trying to defend his own actions. Maybe not so much brilliant, but in Durham County damn lucky.
