Lawyers for former presidential contender John Edwards lashed out at Andrew Young today, saying his former aide is "primarily motivated by financial gain" in publishing a book packed with allegations about Edwards' affair with a mistress and his elaborate efforts to cover it up. snip Edwards has previously declined to comment on the allegations leveled by Young in interviews with ABC's "20/20" and in his book "The Politician," which will be released Saturday. His lawyers, however, issued a statement today. "While we have not had an opportunity to view the interview or read the book, we urge extreme caution by everyone involved. From media reports, it is obvious that there are many allegations which are simply false. It appears that Andrew Young is primarily motivated by financial gain and media attention," the statement said. The statement was released by Wade M. Smith and James P. Cooney III, attorneys for Edwards. Edwards' former mistress Rielle Hunter also fought back today, winning a temporary restraining order that prevents Young from distributing a video and photos she claims belong to her. |

If I remember correctly, the Edwards deceased son was named for Wade Smith....so old and faithful friends. I greatly admire these two, but I'm curious why they would not read the book before commenting on it. I think it's not exactly War and Peace. But if they read it, of course, that could undermine the ability to make this statement of denial. Or force them to say what they deny. (Sigh.) |

Edwards practiced law in Wade's firm. The difference in their ages may make Wade Smith feel like a father figure to Edwards. My first response was "everyone has a price" but I know that's my cynical attitude towards lawyers. Edwards is facing the worst crisis of his life short of losing his son. He obviously needs help. I have no sympathy for him whatsoever, but Wade Smith just might. I know for those of us who watched him stand in the line of fire for Dave find it hard to swallow. |

This would presume that there is some worthwhile objective to playing with words to defend Edwards public persona. The "public" is done with him. Edwards has no need to defend his "public persona" No remedial work or resurrection of his reputation is possible. He's done. Why bother? To what possible end? The best advice to Edwards would be...try to be a decent father to your children, including that little girl you denied. Stay AWAY from high profile trips to disaster sites. Too obvious. Find ways to redeem yourself where no one can see you. As long as you're looking for some "reward" here...something IN IT for you....no amount of "good works" will fool anyone. You were a pretty little cupcake that fell into the toilet. No faithful friends (even skillful lawyers) are going to be able to conjure the words to get you on the "menu" again. .....Spin, Spin...Flush. All gone now. |

Is Wade his lawyer for this October 2008 incident too? http://projects.newsobserver.com/under_the_dome/john_edwards_suspect_0 John Edwards: 'Suspect' Submitted by bniolet on 2010-01-29 14:54 Tags: Under the Dome | Elizabeth Edwards | John Edwards The Orange County sheriff's office released today a copy of a report alleging a "domestic between spouses and larceny of wallet" on Oct. 10, 2008, at the home of John and Elizabeth Edwards. In the report, Elizabeth Edwards describes how John Edwards came to the home to eat dinner with his children after a sports event, Mark Johnson reports. She told him they were dining with the babysitter, and he had no business being there, according to the report. Moments later, John Edwards challenged his wife’s comment and said the house was his, as well. Then Elizabeth Edwards said she saw her husband take her lime green wallet, which contained $320, credit cards and a Motorola Razr phone. John Edwards went down to "the barn," an adjoining structure that includes a full-size basketball court, for several minutes before beginning to leave, according to the report. "As Mr. Edwards was leaving, he was asked to give the wallet back,” the report said, “and he advised that he did not have it." The report ends by giving Edwards – a former U.S. Senator, former presidential candidate and former Democratic vice presidential nominee – a new title: "suspect." UPDATE FOR THE CONSPIRACY THEORISTS: The report had been kept secret since it was filed more than a year ago at the request of Elizabeth Edwards, the sheriff said. He cited a state statute that allows incident reports to be kept confidential temporarily in cases where the documents’ release could endanger the victims physical or mental well-being. |

I am not defending Wade Smith. I am only trying to find what his rationale for defending Edwards might be. That said, for the sake of this young child (despite the fact that she has an off the wall mother), the law firm may be trying to protect this child from harm and embarrassment all the while defending Edwards. Edwards deserves nothing in my opinion, but the innocent child who must grow up amidst this circus deserves a break even chance to have a normal life like those enjoyed by Edward's children with Elizabeth. |

Wade has been very careful in his televised statements to the local press. If I ever needed a lawyer and had the money......they would be my choice along with Joe. |

Joe - head and shoulders above Smith. Smith comes across as the "of counsel" of the firm. Joe Cheshire - go get'em Joe. |

The worst criminal in the nation has a right to an attorney, and the attorney has my respect for representing him. Any other respect they'd have to earn, and I'd say Wade has earned his share and more from many. |

I understand what you all are trying to say. I'm just puzzled. I just don't see why Edwards needs anything other than a divorce attorney. The excellent talents of these two fine attorneys are wasted attempting any PR for him...or making carefully worded attempts to restore any part of his reputation. There's nothing this book can take way from him. What is left of his reputation to protect? As for protecting the child..too late. His youngest daughter will always bear the burden of being the daughter he denied in public repeatedly..the child he assigned someone else to claim. Even Wade Smith and Jim Cooney at their finest cannot protect her from the video clips and interview quotes of her Father denying her....for his own ends and purposes. IMO, any further details of the sordid story pale in comparison to that. |

Joan, its not just about a divorce. How Edwards spent his campaign funds is a huge issue in all this mess. I suspect that's where Jim comes in. |

Good point, J. I had not thought of that issue and it is a big one. In fact, it's an issue that could potentially cause Edwards far more trouble long term than a divorce. |
