N&O reporting.

Three young men, members of the Duke Lacrosse team have been charged with raping a local dancer who also claims racial slurs were used during the alleged attack. While the evidence is being gathered, we are urged by authorities not to jump to any conclusions about motive.

Mental health professionals urge us to recall that the young men were under considerable stress as part of a competitive sports team engaged in a high profile winning season. They were matriculating at a very competitive university. There are numerous studies about depression and suicidal tendencies occurring among gifted youth placed in these situations. The alleged rape and racial slurs could have been nothing more than a desperate cry by these young men for help. There is so much more to learn before we rush to judgment or condemn these young men, various Durham leaders caution us.

How are WE as society responsible for these three young men reaching such a state of victimization that they had no recourse but to act out?

"Whatever they did, must be put in a much broader context" Duke President Richard Brodhead remarked. He reiterated how very proud Duke University was to sponsor a lacrosse team on campus. Brodhead reminded us that every type of sports team is a revered member of the Duke community.

"Before judging these young men...we must interview family members and friends" added Dr. Progressive Windbag. "It well may be that one or more of them had tried to remove himself from this Helmeted Sports situation. A sensitive young man might not be able to handle the casual violence of this kind of activity. Assaulting a young woman might be a way to act out his feelings of personally being trapped. Let us not rush to judgment till we understand what these young Lacrosse Players may have suffered themselves."

Other experts point to evidence that one of the two dancers referred to the Lacrosse players as "limp-di#%ed white boys." "Who knows how many times these young men had been victimized by this type of rhetoric? Any crime must include sensitivity to bullying and loss of self-worth.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton stepped forward to remind us that even if the charges are true... most privileged white Lacrosse Players never become violent. They both indicated they have close personal friends who are now or were once Lacrosse players. In any event, they announced they both will personally be funding two Lacrosse scholarships at Duke going forward.

In a show of support for Lacrosse Players everywhere, Mayor Bell announced he will be attending all area Lacrosse games for the rest of the immediate season. He was seen last night at a UNC match, wearing a tee shirt that said.."Lacrosse is a Lovely Sport."

They also may have suffered a "breached birth" causing their mental faculties to migrate to the wrong end.
