Published Fri, Nov 06, 2009 02:00 AM Modified Fri, Nov 06, 2009 06:03 AM Sex toy research causes a stir at Duke DURHAM At Duke University, a school that likes to tout its cutting-edge research, a sex toy study being conducted by a behavioral economist and student health workers has roused criticism. For much of October, researchers recruited female Duke students to take part in a "sexually explicit" study on Tupperware-style parties in which sex toys, not kitchenware, are the draw. The ads, which were posted around campus and on a research study Web site, sought female students at least 18 years old to "view sex toys and engage in sexually explicit conversation with other female Duke students." ... Father Joe Vetter, director of the Duke Catholic Center, was so troubled by the ads that he contacted researchers at Duke student health services and Dan Ariely, the professor of behavioral economics at the Duke business school and senior fellow at the Duke Kenan Institute for Ethics involved in the study. "My understanding is there is a concern on campus about promiscuity," Vetter said. In recent years, some university health centers have touted sex toys as alternatives to risky sexual behavior and serial promiscuity. The study, Vetter said, was designed by health care workers to see whether such approaches work. "I'm concerned about promiscuity also," Vetter said. "And to be honest, I don't have the solution. ... My concern is these students are in this developmental phase, and I don't think it's a good developmental practice to just tell somebody to just sit around and masturbate. I don't think that promotes relationships." Vetter hopes to take up the topic on Sunday with students. He wrote for the Sunday bulletin: "Can We Talk About Sex in Church?" Efforts to reach Ariely and others in charge of the research project were unsuccessful Thursday. The ad no longer appears on the Web site, Duke officials say, because the study is filled. Michael Schoenfeld, Duke's vice president for public affairs, said that all kinds of research are important on university campuses and that the sex toy party project went through a peer review process before any students were sought. "Not all research will make people comfortable," Schoenfeld said. anne.blythe@newsobserver.com or 919 932-8741 |

Dan Ariely is frequently a guest on Marketplace (American Public Media) and I have found him to be interesting and fairly humorous. I don't know if he's in the 88 or one of the Econ profs who supported the DLAX students... By the way, why don't they have a similar parallel study about undergraduate men and THEIR sex toys, dolls, fake vajayjays, internet porn, magazines? It can't be a tupperware-style party cause (straight) college men don't do that, unless HBO films it for their Real Sex series. |

Ohhhh, I didn't realize that the sex-toy party project had gone through the "peer review process." Well, then, I am really sorry that we even brought this up as an issue. I mean if "peer review" by a bunch of other wacko professors says it's okay, then everything is fine and dandy. What an unbelievably lame excuse! The administration at Duke is so screwed up Certain groups of faculty must be sorry that Brodhead made such a big deal about the Lax players hiring strippers for a party. That's putting a bad spotlight on all these wacko projects and shows at Duke. Brodhead should have just stuck to the rape, even if it didn't happen. His public remark "What they did was bad enough" will come back to bite them for years to come. Edited by MikeZPU, Nov 6 2009, 04:35 PM.

Sex Toy Study at Duke University Raises Some Eyebrows Friday, November 06, 2009 DURHAM, N.C. — A campus religious leader is unhappy about a study at Duke University that invites female students to attend parties where they can buy sex toys. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that the director of the Duke Catholic Center has lodged a complaint with researchers. The Rev. Joe Vetter says the study doesn't promote relationships. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,572486,00.html?test=latestnews The Blog Hooligans! You saw it here first folks! It appears that Duke is a sex crazed institution and it's faculty are looking for new ways to stimulate themselves and gain that ultimate sexual gratification. Is Duke attempting to redefine the 77 virgin model developed by some other misunderstood group? Is Duke suicidal with all the headlines related to sexual deviants and deviations? |
