Obama visit gets lukewarm welcome from Russian media

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's media on Tuesday gave muted coverage to the first day of U.S. President Barack Obama's visit, cautioning that the promised "reset" in U.S.-Russia ties remained far off.

At the start of a trip intended to mend strained ties, Obama and Kremlin leader Dmitry Medvedev agreed on Monday to set a target for cuts in nuclear arms and reached a deal to let U.S. troops fly across Russia.

But Russia's popular Moskovsky Komsomolets daily cautioned against rushing into optimistic conclusions.

"Can the leopard change his spots?" it asked. "America's main strategic course remains unchanged, irrespective of whoever occupies the president's chair."

"Obama now acutely needs a visible and tangible foreign policy success... Warming relations with Russia would well fit in to become such a success."

Ekho Moskvy, Moscow's most influential radio news station, opened its morning news bulletin with a report on the death of dissident author Vasily Aksyonov, relegating Obama's visit to second spot. It played a soundbite from Medvedev but no quote from the U.S. leader.

In a tongue-in-cheek article, the business daily Kommersant said Russia's former President Vladimir Putin, who now wields vast powers as prime minister, was visiting a combine harvester producer in southern Russia when Obama was in Moscow on Monday.

"Barack Obama run over by combine harvesters," read its ironic front-page article on the visit...

...the Izvestia daily said the U.S. leader had not been given a red-carpet reception on his arrival.

"If -- all of a sudden -- Obama had hoped for a red carpet and a crazy crowd of fans chanting something like Hollywood-style, 'We love you!', nothing of the kind was awaiting him in Moscow," it reported.

"But one also cannot say that there weren't at all any gawkers dying to get a glimpse of the U.S. president."

Free vacation for the kids. Why not take them back to Chicago so they can see their friends?

Rasmussen: Obama still slipping :ears:

Barack Obama’s “passion index” rating dropped to the lowest level of his presidency, according to the latest Rasmussen polling. Thirty-six percent of respondents now strongly disapprove of his performance, compared to 33% who strongly approve, giving him a -3 rating. The poll does not completely cover the period of time since the last unemployment report, meaning that he may still drop further:

Then this:

Obama Approval Crumbles in Ohio

http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com/

Might be time to bus in the ACORN thugs to crack some heads in Ohio. The state was overrun by the perpetrators of voter fraud last fall and helped Obama win the traditional swing state.

Well, it sure looks like Hopenchange has suffered a premature death there.
President Obama's job approval in Ohio has dropped significantly in the last two months, dipping under the 50% mark for the first time, according to a new poll by Quinnipiac University. In the last Quinnipiac poll in Ohio taken in early May, Obama enjoyed a healthy 62% job approval rating, with only 31% disapproving. Today, Obama's job approval stands at 49%, with 44% disapproving - a twenty-five point net drop in just eight weeks.

Not surprsingly, Obama has seen a corresponding drop among voters' approval of his handling of the economy: two months ago he had a net +21 approval (57/36), today it is -2 (46/48).
A swing of 23 points in two months, all the while he lamely blames Bush for his own economic mess.

Let's hope Ohio is an indicator of crumbling approval nationwide.

Meanwhile, Obama now also is at his lowest Rasmussen approval index.
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 33% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-six percent (36%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of –3. Those figures reflect the highest level of strong disapproval measured to date and the lowest level recorded for the overall Approval Index.
