Cute little boy- and he seems to have survived the illness.

It's strange that his family didn't acquire the virus but others must have.

WHO notches up swine flu pandemic alert
Global outbreak considered imminent; vaccine efforts will be ramped up

updated 4 minutes ago

The World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert for swine flu to the second highest level Wednesday, meaning that it believes a global outbreak of the disease is imminent.

WHO Director General Margaret Chan declared the phase 5 alert after consulting with flu experts from around the world. The decision could lead the global body to recommend additional measures to combat the outbreak, including for vaccine manufacturers to switch production from seasonal flu vaccines to a pandemic vaccine.

"All countries should immediately now activate their pandemic preparedness plans," Chan told reporters in Geneva. "It really is all of humanity that is under threat in a pandemic."

A phase 5 alert means there is sustained transmission among people in at least two countries. Once the virus shows effective transmission in two different regions of the world a full pandemic outbreak — level 6 — would be declared, meaning a global epidemic of a new and deadly disease.

What is interesting is watching this spread around the world so quickly. Of course what I don't have is baseline numbers to see if this is any different from any other virus. Is the reporting better?

First U.S. swine flu death is Mexico City boy in Houston
Texas shuts down high school competitions until May 11

The first reported death in the United States from the swine flu outbreak was that of a 23-month-old Mexico City boy who fell ill in Brownsville and was transported for treatment at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, where he died Monday, officials said.

Also, officials suspended all high school athletic and academic competition statewide until at least May 11 because of the spreading flu, which has prompted five districts to cancel classes entirely, including three in suburban San Antonio.

Gov. Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration for the entire state, basically a paperwork measure that allows Texas to begin emergency protective measures and seek reimbursement from the federal government. Perry also said Texas has 850,000 more courses of antiviral medicine coming, which would double its supply.

Dr. David Persse, director of Houston's emergency medical services, said the acutely ill child was admitted to a Brownsville hospital on April 13 and immediately was rushed by medical transport to Houston.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the boy already had "several underlying health problems" before he flew to Matamoros on April 4 and crossed into Brownsville to visit relatives.

The boy came down with a fever April 8, followed by other flu-like symptoms, the state said.

Persse learned of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmation of the virus before dawn this morning. Other people accompanying the child have shown no signs of illness, and the boy was not known to be sick when he crossed the border, Persse said

BREAKING NEWS: Mexico to shut down nonessential government offices, businesses, reports say
WHO notches up swine flu pandemic alert
Global outbreak considered imminent; vaccine efforts will be ramped up

msnbc.com staff and news service reports
updated 5 minutes ago

Global health authorities warned Wednesday that swine flu was threatening to bloom into a pandemic, and the virus spread farther in Europe even as the outbreak appeared to stabilize at its epicenter. A toddler who succumbed in Texas became the first death outside Mexico.

New cases and deaths finally seemed to be leveling off in Mexico, where 160 people have been killed, after an aggressive public health campaign. But the World Health Organization said the global threat is nevertheless serious enough to ramp up efforts to produce a vaccine against the virus. The group raised its pandemic alert for swine flu to the second highest level Wednesday, meaning that it believes a global outbreak of the disease is imminent. It was the first time the WHO had declared a Phase 5 outbreak.

CNN just announced that Ft. Worth is shutting down its entire school district until May 11.

Speaking of CNN, they are doing a live vote on their website on Obama's report card. He's getting mostly B's. They are voting about every 15 minutes on another question and then closing that question. You can still make your voice heard:

Scientists see this flu strain as relatively mild

Genetic data indicate this outbreak won't be as deadly as that of 1918, or even the average winter.

By Karen Kaplan and Alan Zarembo
April 30, 2009
As the World Health Organization raised its infectious disease alert level Wednesday and health officials confirmed the first death linked to swine flu inside U.S. borders, scientists studying the virus are coming to the consensus that this hybrid strain of influenza -- at least in its current form -- isn't shaping up to be as fatal as the strains that caused some previous pandemics.

In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare... snipped

"Let's not lose track of the fact that the normal seasonal influenza is a huge public health problem that kills tens of thousands of people in the U.S. alone and hundreds of thousands around the world," said Dr. Christopher Olsen, a molecular virologist who studies swine flu at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison.

His remarks Wednesday came the same day Texas authorities announced that a nearly 2-year-old boy with the virus had died in a Houston hospital Monday.

"Any time someone dies, it's heartbreaking for their families and friends," Olsen said. "But we do need to keep this in perspective.....

There's a girl in a suburban area near Houston who has been diagnosed with swine flu, but she is fine now and ready to return to school. However, her school here (private Episcopal high school) has been closed down because of the state health dept.

It appears as though the reported deaths are the result of not getting medical attention until it was too late.

Toddler who died of swine flu visited Houston mall

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A Mexico City toddler who became the first swine-flu death on U.S. soil spent a day with his family shopping at a huge Houston indoor mall the day before he began to show symptoms.
Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos says the Brownsville family with whom the toddler was staying said they spent three nights in Houston just before he fell ill.

Hospital and health officials said Wednesday that the 23-month old Mexico City boy arrived in Brownsville on April 4 and was hospitalized four days later.

They said he had no outside contact once he was hospitalized. The family has shown no symptoms.
