What about cooks in restaurants? I had lunch today in a Mexican restaurant. During lunch I got to thinking about being about 2 hours from where two were confirmed with swine flu and then wondering who was preparing my lunch, and did they wash their hands! Kind of lost my appetite. |

You should not be too concerned. Absolute majority of exposures do not lead to infections, and a huge majority of infections are mild - and most likely, you have not been exposed to start with. Generally, Americans seem to be nearly immune to viruses, even when lesser human breeds die like flies - and the same applies to hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, and other natural disasters! As it happens, I managed to be at the wrong place at the wrong time both in '57 and '68. In each case, the whole thing amounted to a nasty cold ('57 was nastier than '68, at least for me). When people are generally healthy, well-fed and well-exercised - viruses run in fear!

. This topic does bring to light the PC nature and the adherence to it at all costs with this administration. I wouldn't be surprised if they put in Safeguards at the Border - of CANADA! . |

Let's waterboard everyone with swine flu until they tell us how they contacted the virus. |

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30431245 EU health chief: Don't travel to Mexico or U.S. Warning comes as Spain reports first confirmed case of swine flu in Europe updated 36 minutes ago LUXEMBOURG - The European Union's health commissioner urged Europeans on Monday to postpone nonessential travel to the United States or Mexico due to swine flu. EU Health Commissioner Andorra Vassiliou met with the EU foreign ministers on the subject as Spain reported the first confirmed case of swine flu in Europe. That was also the first swine flu case outside North America. On arriving in Luxembourg, Vassiliou advised Europeans to reassess their travel plans. snip... |

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/nassau/ny-liswin2812702162apr27,0,801449.story Late last week students began overwhelming the nurse's office at St. Francis Prep, complaining of fever, nausea, sore throats and achy bones. The nurse notified the New York City Health Department - and when more students reported being sick Friday, the health department dispatched a team to the school. Officials said that team got caught in traffic and didn't arrive at St. Francis until 3:30 p.m., just as classes were being dismissed for the weekend. Brother Leonard Conway, principal of St. Francis, said only a handful of students were still around and that eight of them promptly tested positive. But more than 100 students are suspected to have the swine flu at St. Francis, officials told The Associated Press. Many of those infected had recently visited Mexico. Twenty-eight students at a Queens parochial school have confirmed cases of the potentially lethal swine flu, with 17 others likely having the illness, New York City's mayor said Monday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg emphasized that St. Francis Prep in Fresh Meadows appears to be the only cluster of the virus in the city. "We are still dealing with a single cluster," Bloomberg said at a news conference. The 28 students confirmed to have swine flu are improving, Bloomberg said. |

. Here's the "leadership" Newt Gingrich offered when he was brought on Fox to discuss Policy implications, his only offering was that everyone should wash their hands for 20 seconds! I'm not kidding. Gingrich, IMO, will always let you down. . |

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/antiviral_swine.htm Antiviral Drugs and Swine Influenza Antiviral Drugs Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) with activity against influenza viruses, including swine influenza viruses. Antiviral drugs can be used to treat swine flu or to prevent infection with swine flu viruses. These medications must be prescribed by a health care professional. Influenza antiviral drugs only work against influenza viruses -- they will not help treat or prevent symptoms caused by infection from other viruses that can cause symptoms similar to the flu. There are four influenza antiviral drugs approved for use in the United States (oseltamivir, zanamivir, amantadine and rimantadine). The swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses that have been detected in humans in the United States and Mexico are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine so these drugs will not work against these swine influenza viruses. Laboratory testing on these swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses so far indicate that they are susceptible (sensitive) to oseltamivir and zanamivir. Benefits of Antiviral Drugs Treatment: If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious influenza complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started as soon after getting sick as possible, and might not work if started more than 48 hours after illness starts. Prevention: Influenza antiviral drugs also can be used to prevent influenza when they are given to a person who is not ill, but who has been or may be near a person with swine influenza. When used to prevent the flu, antiviral drugs are about 70% to 90% effective. When used for prevention, the number of days that they should be used will vary depending on a person’s particular situation. CDC Recommendation CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses. Oseltamivir (brand name Tamiflu ®) is approved to both treat and prevent influenza A and B virus infection in people one year of age and older. Zanamivir (brand name Relenza ®) is approved to treat influenza A and B virus infection in people 7 years and older and to prevent influenza A and B virus infection in people 5 years and older. Recommendations for using antiviral drugs for treatment or prevention of swine influenza will change as we learn more about this new virus. Clinicians should consider treating any person with confirmed or suspected swine influenza with an antiviral drug. Visit: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/recommendations.htm for specific recommendations. |

Renaming the Virus. Political Correctness? The top agency for health in farm animals on Monday said Mexico's outbreak of deadly influenza was unleashed by a pathogen mixed from bird, human and hog viruses and branded the term "swine flu" as wrong and harmful to pig farmers. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said the pathogen was "not a classic human virus... but a virus which includes [in] its characteristics swine, avian and human virus components." The virus has not been isolated in animals to date. Therefore, it is not justified to name this disease swine influenza," the Paris-based OIE said in a statement. It said that science would show whether the virus was circulating among farm animals and the outcome should determine whether countries were justified in banning pig imports. "Currently, only findings related to the circulation of this virus in pigs in zones of countries having human cases would justify trade measures on the importation of pigs from these countries," it said. In an interview with AFP, OIE Director General Bernard Vallat described the virus as a "cocktail" of four different strains. "The background of these strains has been reconstituted," he said. "The avian strain is of American origin, and of the two swine strains, one is American origin and the other appears to be Asian. The human strain is American." He added: "There is no proof that this virus, currently circulating among humans, really is of animal origin. There is no element to support this." Vallat argued that "it would be really unfair to penalise pig farmers, who depend on their output for their livelihood, by talking about a risk which is not at all proven." The OIE noted that past epidemics of human influenza epidemics with animal origin had been named after their geographical origin, such as Spanish flu or Asian flu. "It would be logical to call this disease 'North American influenza'," it suggested. Vallat said that "no-one, so far" had been able to show how or where the novel strain of virus had brewed. Pigs are well-known crucibles for mixing viruses, able to harbour strains of flu that normally are specific to pigs, birds and humans. When present in the same animal, these viruses are able to swap genes as they replicate, which can result in a new strain and leap the species barrier to humans. However, the strain may further mutate as it is transmitted among humans, and, in addition, humans may infect pigs rather than the other way round. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.8282347267271b64646e51f83dc4437f.8a1&show_article=1 |
