A very negative review of Tim Tyson's book; blood didn't sign my name?

Apparently a relative of the alleged "shooter" in the case which is the focus of Duke Professor Tim Tyson's book, "Blood Done Sign My Name"", has now put up a website disputing central "facts"
as presented by Tyson. (Will the movie script have to be revised?)

"I can’t believe no one has ever questioned or challenged Timothy B.Tyson and his work?"

I have no idea which version of the events is correct; but the website does allege major factual errors or misrepresentations.

The one thing at this point that I would not have trouble believing is that a Duke history prof
could engage in "stretching" the facts to make them fit an agenda-driven story.

And that is a sad legacy of the lax case.

In defendants’ version of events, the father (Larry) and step-brother (Roger) came with guns to Robert’s defense after Marrow threatened Robert with “a large knife”. As Marrow turned to flee, Larry shot him with a shotgun in either the thigh or the buttocks (accounts vary). Roger then shot Marrow in the head, accidently, he says, when he was jostled in the melee. Larry and Robert were acquitted of murder charges by an all-white jury. Roger was never tried.

Robert Teel says that Tyson could not have heard on the evening of May 12, 1970, from Gerald Teel that “Daddy and Roger and ‘em shot ‘em a Ni*ger” for two reasons: First, Robert claims that the Teel boys were not friends with Tyson, and that in fact they disliked him. Second, Robert claims that the Teel younger children were taken into hiding immediately after the incident, so that Gerald Teel could not have made this remark to Tyson even if he wanted to. (“Immediately following the shooting incident we locked up the businesses and went straight to the Police Station in Oxford. My brother's [sic] left Granville County on May 12, 1970 in the morning hours.” Robert supports his recollection with a newspaper article that states that the younger Teels “did not return to school in Oxford after May 11.”)

Robert Teel also disputes Tyson’s contention that after Marrow’s death “men draped in white robes and hoods” stood guard over the Teel’s property. Most devastating to Tyson’s version of history is Robert’s evidence contradicting Tyson’s claim that a memorial march for the dead was fired upon by Ku Klux Klansmen. This contention is disproved by three different contemporaneous newspaper accounts of the march. This is a strange error for Tyson to make, given that he claimed to have read all the newspaper accounts of the incident.

Finally, there is a bizarre “contract for legal services” apparently penned by Tyson and signed by him and Gerald Teel in 1984. What can be the story of this I cannot say. Others are free to try to interpret the contract’s origin and meaning
.

excerpts:

The book Blood Done Sign My Name, page 3. A couple of men draped in white hoods and robes on our front porch. That would indicate the KKK to me. I myself have researched The Oxford Ledger, The Durham Herald, Raleigh Times and News & Observer. There is no mention of this from these papers during that time. I believe something that major would not have been left out of the papers. I can not personally confirm or deny about the robes because I was not there. But the newspaper confirms there were hired armed guards in many locations. Other family members have confirmed there were guards at the house. My father’s place of business also had guards. But No One in Robes. This is another one of Tim Tyson's total fabrications! There is further evidence of this in the Newspaper Article Section on this website.

------------------

Book Blood Done Sign My Name, Page 289-290, Here Tim Tyson is representing himself as a 23 year old man shaking like a leaf, lying about being hyped up on coffee, with a Ice Pick tucked in his pocket like the race hustler he is going to get a interview with Robert Gerald Teel. Then Tim allowed this man [who was a barber] to cut his hair, shave around his neck and ears with a straight razor! Can you imagine the trash talking and junk that Tim said to get a interview?

When Tim arrived at Teel’s Tim told Teel he was going to Law school at Duke to be a Lawyer and would like to do an interview with Teel about the events of May 11, 1970 for a school thesis paper. According to this contract that Tim wrote and signed for Robert Gerald Teel, Tim was going to represent Mr.Teel as his legal council on a 50/50 basis when he graduated from law school. Tim don't remember bragging that when he got out of law school and won this case that he would have a heck of a reputation coming right out of the gate and his career would be set life. So now the public is aware of part of Tim's little scheme, the public should wonder who was Tim going to sue?
Was it the town of Oxford, the African American community, or just who?

------------

Timothy B. Tyson has portrayed my family as being racist and full of hatred in his opening statement.
Timothy B. Tyson needs the readers to believe this incident happened because of a flirtatious remark.
Timothy B. Tyson hides the facts that a man was advancing on me with an oversized knife.
Timothy B. Tyson has made up the information about a grocery/convenience store that my father never owned.
Timothy B. Tyson was the only one that saw men in Robes on the porch. Five different newspapers made no mention of it.
Timothy B. Tyson knew about Roger before it ever went to court.

I have no idea who is correct, or how Tyson would answer the many allegations made at the website. But as noted, my lack of respect for Duke profs as a result of the lax case, has made me much more willing to consider that the allegations may have more than a whiff of truth in them, than I would have before.

Metanarritives don't depend upon the truth. They are based on the ideology being pushed by the author and spun into a good tale.

It's an old trick really.
