Evidently yesterday’s blog raised some eyebrows around the country. My apologies if I came off as sensationalist in nature. For the record, I wasn’t the one saying the team was canceled. Another person made that statement in writing via email to multiple media outlets. So please don’t shoot me as the messenger. Clearly “something” happened as ASU Lacrosse canceled 2 games this weekend. Two games just don’t fall off the schedule like mere days before the start of the season. What that “something” is, remains to be said publicly. My point wasn’t to disparage Arizona State Lacrosse. But while the 2009 ASU season hasn’t been canceled at this moment in time, the program has been temporarily or indefinitely suspended pending some sort of hearing on campus. Hopefully, some type of official statement will come out soon from the team and/or school to quell the rumors. One other clarification from yesterday’s post - Rob Graff quickly reminded me that the two previous situations with regard to team suspensions were different. Marquette (hazing) and Minnesota (alcohol) were different. I wasn’t trying to insuiate they were the same. Apologies to Golden Eagles, Golden Gophers, and all points North of my keyboard. http://forums.collegelax.us/news/?p=8988 Let's just hope some Burness type is not the VP of communications for ASU Here's a warning from a Lax Coach to check your players facebook page http://www.collegelax.us/news/2009/02/05/underage-coaching-playoffs-in-february/ Edited by Baldo, Feb 14 2009, 08:32 PM.

....The team was indefinitely suspended by the school two weeks ago, prior to a pair of season opening NCAA scrimmages in Phoenix. The school was investigating alleged hazing violations involving members of the lacrosse team. The school apparently made that suspension permanent for the entire 2009 season earlier today. No. 4 ASU, who made their first appearance in the MCLA Final Four last May at Texas Stadium, won’t get the chance to make a return appearance when the tournament moves to Denver in May. Arizona State, who postponed last weekend’s trip to Stanford University to participate in the Pac-10 lacrosse tournament, was scheduled to travel to Las Vegas on Saturday for a conference game at UNLV. Arizona State Coach Chris Malone couldn’t be reached for comment and school officials have declined repeated e-mail inquires for comment. An obviously crushing blow to both the Southwestern Lacrosse Community and the entire MCLA. There is just no other words to describe the situation. A top 5 MCLA program coming off their best season in the school’s history is kaput without strapping on their gear for one measly scrimmage. The public may never know the particulars of what exactly happened, but it doesn’t really matter. Arizona State has been very quick to penalize what they deem unsavory behavior before. Remember what they did last year to their cheerleading squad after those racy pictures where uncovered on the Internet? Obviously that isn’t same situation, but clearly the school has set a pretty high standard. As I discussed earlier, most schools have a lot less to lose in cutting a sports club versus a varsity program. With almost 60,000 students on campus, the lacrosse club is probably just one less headache for the school to deal with. http://www.collegelax.us/news/2009/02/19/sonny-side-up-arizona-state-terminated/ |

And it allows the College Presidents and Administrators Guild® to gin up some unfavorable publicity on Lax players and help their fellow guild member Richard Brodhead's lawsuit troubles. "Why lookee there. ASU has rich white boy lax players who are heathens just like those Duke Lacrosse players. Whatever they did was bad enough, doncha know. And their rich daddies will probably buy their way out of trouble, just like the Dukies." Or some such scenario. |
