Rereading this portion of UPI raises an interesting issue: After reviewing Gottlieb's conduct with Duke students, concerns were raised by many (including Durham attorney Robert Ekstrand) that one day there could be a confrontation with tragic results. Ergo, a compilation of Gottlieb's record with Duke students was made, and a client of Ekstand's "passed the message and the Ekstrand dossier [on Gottlieb] to a high-level Duke administrator, saying that "you've got a rogue cop on your hands." The client urged that something be done before a student got seriously hurt or worse. It's unclear what happened next. But eleven days later, Gottlieb was transferred to another beat." (UPI, pp. 54-55) So on the one hand, it appears that Duke has the clout with the city of Durham to get a cop transferred. OTOH, after the lax case started, all Brodhead could do was wring his hands and say Duke was powerless. What might have happened had Duke--knowing that Gottlieb was involved--involved itself again with the city and used its influence to suggest that Gottlieb be transferred off the investigation? Is it really possible that Duke had no ability to influence a police investigation run amock? And no ability to suggest to the city council and to Baker that due process had better be followed, and that other investigators needed to be brought in? |

Good Point Quasi! Of course they had power in Durham. What they were afraid of is being called racists and upsetting Durham activist groups who could and did bring down the wrath of the race, class, and gender forces. That is where Duke's Power ended because they were simply afraid of the consequences to themselves, not the innocent 2006 Duke Lacrosse Team. It was their own choice. "It’s not about the truth anymore." He went on, "It’s about the integrity of the university, it’s about the faculty, the city, the NAACP, the protesters, and the other interest groups." |
