Tortmaster on DIW: "I wish to extend a full and complete apology to Ubuntu House at Duke University for believing that it was in any way related to UBUNTU in Durham. After having received a communication from their Vice President Ryan Echternacht, I am satisfied that I was wrong.
Don't know why anyone would be apologizing. Any confusion between the Duke Ubuntu and the Durham Ubuntu is due to the shortsightedness of the Duke organization to consider that it might reflect poorly on them to have the same name as the already infamous. Duh.
Actually UBUNTU was hardly notorious nation wide. You are talking about a group of people (the new Ubuntu) who were juniors in high school, probably from out of state, when this case broke. I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to have been following the minutia of the Lax case on the internet. I don't have any problem believing that they had never heard of the original UBUNTU because the original UBUNTU was really just a small group of shrill individuals with a web site. DUH. The kid handled it very well and probably was due an apology. Go back and reread the Chronicle thread (100 comments) with the knowledge that the two groups are entirely separate. At the end of the day Greg made what I view as a full and sincere apology, something we have seen too little of the past three years. I am not against apologies, in fact I think they are a good thing. Greg is a mensch. I just don't think it was necessary for such an apology in this situation. Greg was probably not the first and will not be the last confusing the two.
I still think the Duke group, advised apparently by Duke (who should have known better) ought to rethink the name, perhaps using 'ubuntu' as a sub-title, slogan or motto.
I wouldn't want my brand new group being confused with the legacy of the Durham group, certainly not now that I'm aware of the problem. They should expect that in the future they may have 'clear' things up quite frequently for those who didn't read the article or the 105+ comments. And I wonder how long it will take the Durham Ubuntu group to, not so innocently, take advantage of the situation.

MOO Memo to the students for the future: when you get ready to name yourself something unusual, Google it.

Ubuntu of Durham or Ubuntu House. I'm willing to believe that a bunch of sophomores didn't make the connection. I find it impossible to believe that the Duke administrators who approved this house and this name didn't make the connection. It's about time that Duke administrators started acting like grownups. They should have recommended that a different name be selected.
