There isnt a Toronto Blue Jays fan anywhere who doesnt want to know whats wrong with Ricky Romero. Yes, the Jays ace does have an 8-2 record, but his ERA is pushing 5.00 and his control and his ability to locate his fastball has been off in the majority of his starts. Well, I think I might have a clue. While Roy Halladay and Ricky are two different pitchers with different skill sets and notable physical differences, they do have a major similarity. After "Doc" had his breakout season in 2002 with 19 victories he followed it up with 22 wins in 2003. Then, 2004 happened. In that year, Halladay came down with what was described as a tired arm or shoulder fatigue. He went 8-8 with a 4.20 earned run average. In those two great years of 2002 and 2003 Halladay threw 239.1 innings and then 266. In 2004 "tired arm" Now consider Ricky. The last two years hes thrown 210 and 225 innings and went 15-11 with a 2.92 earned run average last season, his best to date. This year something is wrong. The Jays seem to be saying its strictly mechanical and maybe it is, but maybe its just the number of innings thrown over the past two seasons. Pitchers have peaks and valleys. Roy Halladay bounced back and is forging a Hall of Fame career. There is no reason Ricky cant do the same. Through his first four seasons, and he as slightly younger than Romero, Halladay went a combined 18-17. In this his 4th season, Ricky is 50-31 with a 3.78 era. The Jays have fallen back to .500 and are in tough at home the rest of the weekend at Rogers Centre against the Wild Card holding Angels. Its hard to believe the Halos started the season 6-14, fired hitting coach Mickey Hatcher and seemed poised to do the same to skipper Mike Scioscia. Theyve now won 25 of their last 33 and an incredible 14 of their last 15 on the road. Part of their success has come from the emergence, of Mike Trout, and the continuing development of Mark Trumbo. Getting reliever Ernesto Frieri from San Diego and having him become a lights out closer reminds one of the Jays getting Tom Henke from Texas. He came up in the summer of 1985 and helped the Jays to their first division title. The Angels may yet overtake Texas in the West. Jays going to the All-Star Game? The All-Star rosters will be announced on Sunday. While Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion should be going to Kansas City, I dont believe that Romero should go if hes asked. He needs time to rest his arm and refocus. While I think that Encarnacion should go, Ive got a hunch that he is going to get caught in a numbers squeeze and will be one of the odd men out. Future Watch Anthony Gose is the only Jays prospects in the "Futures" game at Kansas City, since top catching prospect Travis dArnaud is gone for six-to-eight weeks with a knee injury. A Look Back I was doing a little research recently on the 1981 Jays. I checked out a particular box score from September 3rd of 1981 at old Comiskey Park in Chicago. It was a significant game for a number of reasons, but Ill leave you with this. Three future managers were in the Jays line-up that day. Ernie Whitt, who has guided our National team on numerous occassions with distinction, Ken Macha, and Ernies catcher partner and current Jays TV voice Buck Martinez. The Jays manager that day, the late, great Bobby Mattick was capping off his two years at the helm before giving way to Bobby Cox. Ill have more on that game down the road. Wholesale Nike Jerseys . Arrieta signed with Columbus in April, but the Costa Rican forward debuted for the Crew this month. He scored in the 17th and 34th minutes as Columbus erased an early deficit for its second straight win over an Eastern Conference foe. Columbus (8-7-4) defeated D.C. United, 1-0, last weekend and added an key road win against Sporting. D.C. and Sporting have both led the East this season. The Crew remained sixth in the standings, but have played fewer games than all five teams ahead of it in the table. Sporting (11-7-4) saw its winless skid reach three games as it wasted a chance to move back atop the standings. Red Bull New York, which leads thee East, lost to the Montreal Impact, 3-1, on Saturday, but maintained a one-point cushion.dddddddddddd Kei Kamara handed Kansas City the lead after 8 minutes, as he met a free kick from Graham Zusi in the area and powered in a header for his team-high eighth goal this season. Columbus answered with 10 minutes, as Josh Williams passed to Arrieta, who was able to convert a left-footed shot for his first MLS goal. Arrieta notched the game-winner later in the half, when he converted to the bottom left. Cole Grossman was sent off 5 minutes into stoppage time for Columbus, and K.C. nearly pulled out a point when Kamara had a chance from inside the 6-yard box, but shot just wide with just seconds remaining. Both squads return to MLS action Aug. 4, with Columbus at D.C. and Kansas City at the New England Revolution. ' ' '
