![]() Once upon a time, there was a city nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania named after a gulf in the Indian Ocean. It was fairly average—medium-sized, perhaps with an air pollution and crime problem. Certainly no one expected it to be the site of the meteorological event of the century. One fall evening, the skies turned black in the middle of the day. There was no eclipse. The stars did not shine. It was like everyone was trapped on an elaborate sound-stage, and someone ripped down the backdrop. By the evening of the first frost, the sky broke open and the shadows poured in. A column of ebony thrummed in the exact center of the city, and the things they saw became real. They were breathed in, and they crawled into ears and down mouths, and people started getting sick. Fever, dizziness, nausea, and a slow wasting. Within a day, twenty were dead. In a week, it was a hundred. A few recovered, but went mad; many were never infected at all. There were rumors of a few who became mildly symptomatic, but never succumbed, and went on changed... though it would be folly to admit to infection. Infected individuals had a way of disappearing if word got out. It's been a month since the skies went dark, and things are starting to calm down. But in the stillness, the strange after-effects of the shadow sickness are becoming known, and many say it's only a matter of time before the government does something more than crowd control. Once upon a time, there was a city drowning in shadows. Will you be able to swim, or will you sink to the bottom? — — — — — — — — — — Manaar: The Midnight City is a modern-day dark fantasy board using an optional GM system. |
