Somewhere in the skies of Yafutoma…. It was a pleasant afternoon. Wispy white clouds scudded along beneath the arch of cerulean blue sky, carried by a gentle breeze. The scenery was marred only by the appearance of a dark line on the horizon; the Dark Rift. But this far out, its tempestuous winds could not be felt. Their faint keening could not be heard through the bulkhead of the craft that paralleled it on a southerly course. The craft was a small touring yacht that had set sail from the Tsuki Shrine just that morning. Its next destination was the Ryudo Temple several leagues away. The occupants of this yacht were all taking part in a tour of such holy sites as part of a program designed to help religious institutions throughout Yafutoma come together and communicate with one another. Apparently the resurrection of Blueheim two years prior had sent shockwaves throughout their community, causing unrest and uneasiness as a result. The occupants, of which there were seven, all looked to be members of different sects. Two were females dressed in the garb of mikos. Three were robed males, priests obviously. And the last…well, he was different from the others. ~ Zatoichi wore the trappings of a clergyman but he’d long since given up acting the part. At the moment he was sprawled out on one of the yacht’s benches with a straw hat covering his face. He appeared to be completely relaxed, and he was, but his keen eyes peered out from beneath the hat’s brim, intently watching the other passengers. The ninja was obviously out of place in this setting. He wasn’t at all the religious sort. Why was he here? That was his business. And Zatoichi had never been in the habit of explaining himself. No, his intentions would have to remain a mystery to his fellow passengers. Not that any of them had bothered to question them thus far. In truth the three priests had kept to themselves for much of the journey. They’d only just joined it at the last stop on the tour. They hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary so far but the ninja was still suspicious of them. Then again, Zato was suspicious of everyone now that he thought about it. Still, his intuition had served him well so far and he wasn’t about to begin questioning it now. Zatoichi resolved to keep a close eye on the priests. And on that note, he turned his attention towards the yacht’s other occupants… ~ The Dungeon Crawl has officially begun. Use this round of posts as your openers. Feel free to converse with your fellow passengers and give a brief backstory explaining your arrival on the yacht. If you wish to begin as total strangers, that is fine. But it’s also okay if you want to give your characters prior involvement with each other. Kyuubi and Kiyoshi are both mikos so it’s plausible that they would have met each other before now. Kyuubi is also a thief, as is Zatoichi. They could also be acquainted with one another. The priests are not very talkative though, and should be treated as total strangers. Feel free to write this round up any way you like. The action will start in the next round. |

The touring yacht had picked up a miko from the Tsuki Shrine who now stood by the ship's railing, her raven hair flowing in the breeze. What made this miko stand apart from the normal variety seen in Yafutoma was that her garb was blue instead of red as well as there being a ceramic Huskitsu mask held on the upper-left side of her head and nine Huskitsu tails affixed to the back of her robes right above her rear. The miko's reasons for the trip were rather benign and straight-forward: she wished to see other holy sites and perhaps 'find' some trinkets along the way... Kyuubi smiled somewhat mischievously as she gazed from the priests to the relaxed clergyman and lastly to a fellow priestess. She had always wanted to go on a temple tour and while the priests seemed decidedly boring, at least there was a fellow miko to speak to. With a swaying of her tails she walked over and bowed to the other miko. "Hello! I am Tsukimi Kyuubi, what temple are you from?" Her eyes danced with curiosity as she gazed upon the priestess, momentarily oblivious to the fact that she was being appraised by the sprawling clergyman. Pacing about the ship, pretending to be appraise the various wooden and metal pieces that made it up, was just a way for her to ease her shaky legs and settled the constant turn of her gut. To be honest, she had a nonexistent knowledge about ships. The impromptu visit to Ryudo temple had originally sounded like an innocent and spiritually enriching excursion. It still was, but Kiyoshi felt out of place among the rather quiet occupants of the ship. There was a heavy silence hovering threatenly over them, broken only by the occasionally harsh winds that would blow their way. Kiyoshi knew that silence was a valuable thing, especially before an occurrence such as the one they were about to witness. One had to cleanse their mind of all rubbish that could interfere with there focus, but unfortunately for her, the current mood among the passengers was almost bordering on hostility. This was the first time she embarked into such a journey, having visited Yafutoma only a mere couple of times, excitement and uneasiness mixed together within her. Could she be overthinking too much? Surely nothing wrong would come out of this. Admittedly, the trio of priests seemed harmless, if not stiff. They hadn’t moved a bit from their spot since they'd boarded. The clergyman, on the other hand, seemed to be on the lookout, for what? Kiyoshi wouldn’t know. Maybe he too felt uncomfortable, or he was suffering from flying sickness. Such improper thoughts! Kiyoshi chastised herself, shaking her head to clear off her thoughts. She finally halted her pacing, deciding to rest on an inviting corner of the ship that had a decent view of the ominous, yet too far to worry about, Dark Rift. “Focus. Focus. You’re going to a temple. You’re supposed to learn from this experience. Knowledge is good. Knowledge will make you a better priestess for the temple.” Kiyoshi whispered softly as she tried to clear her mind, although a sudden voice ceased her attempts immediately. She’d noticed the peculiar priestess first, out of all of the passengers, saying that she stood out would be an understatement. Her unique choice of wardrobe was rather interesting, Kiyoshi mused privately. Feeling a bit of stiffness lift from her shoulders, she flashed her best smile, glad that she had fallen into friendly territory. “I’m Kiyoshi Inoue, I come from Inoue Island’s temple.” She bowed slightly, “I’m pleased to make your acquaintance, sister Tsukimi.” She glanced briefly at the rest of their companions, and then back to the Miko. “I’m guessing you’re not with them? What temple are you from?” |

White the two mikos socialized, Zatoichi continued with his observation of the three priests. His task was made all the more difficult by the voluminous robes that they wore. Hoods obscured their faces while long sleeves hid their hands from view. Or rather, had until one of them produced a small brown parcel from his pocket and passed it to one of his brethren. The thief’s interest was piqued when he beheld the rings the two men were wearing. They were identical, both consisting of braided gold strands that held a small blue orb ensconced betwixt them. “Symbols of their order?” Zato wondered silently to himself. It seemed a reasonable assumption. And yet a nagging memory from the depths of his mind suggested that he’d seen rings like those before but refused to associate them with any temple or shrine he could recall. Zatoichi resolved to take a closer look at one of those rings just as soon as the opportune moment to steal it presented itself. No sooner had that notion been settled when the monk who had received the parcel a moment earlier removed it from the unassuming brown paper that it had been wrapped in. But it was no afternoon snack of bread and cheese as the ninja might have surmised. No, his eyes widened when he beheld the ornate golden box clutched in the monk’s sweaty grasp. The box had gilded edges and wooden paneling lacquered in royal blue enamel. Zato knew beyond a shadow of a doubt where’d he’d seen an item like this before and felt his stomach clench up in sudden anxiety. It was a Slipara Box. The ninja was in the process of rising to his feet just as the monk raised its lid, producing a light blue glow from within. “Hey, you two!” Zatoichi was calling a warning to the two women even as a magic circle appeared on the deck of the yacht. And Zato was finally able to remember where he’d seen those damn rings before as the spell took affect. “Oh right. Those are Wind Gem Rings….” He realized a second before his face struck the deck and he fell into a deep sleep. ~ Zatoichi groaned and opened his eyes a crack. His vision was still blurry but he was fairly certain that he was no longer aboard the yacht. The ground beneath his feet did not sway with the rhythmic movements of an airship. Zato was also sure that he was not alone in whatever location he'd been brought to. He pretended to still be unconscious for a few seconds, allowing his eyes to adjust, before opening them further to survey his surroundings. The ninja could see that he was in what appeared to be a stockade of sorts. Gray stone walls surrounded him on all sides while a metal door provided egress from the small, cramped chamber. There was a narrow barred grate set into the upper half of the door but no windows anywhere else. Zatoichi turned his head slightly to get a look at who else was occupying the room. Just across from him were a pair of bunks set into the wall. The two mikos from the yacht were sprawled out on these. They both appeared to be unconscious still. Wincing slightly at the effects of having been asleep in an uncomfortable position for too long, the ninja sat up and then rose shakily to his feet. He glanced back to see that he’d been laid out on a small cot pushed up against the wall opposite the bunks. A brief examination of his person revealed that he’d sustained no injuries beyond the mild bump on the head he’d received when he’d fallen victim to the monk’s Slipara spell. He wasn’t at all surprised to note that they’d confiscated all of his weapons. They’d even stripped him of his disguise. Not that it would have been of any further use. His plot had already succeeded, albeit a bit too well it seemed. “Typical text-book abduction tactics.” Zato muttered to himself. “Well, can’t say as I didn’t see it coming so there’s no point in griping about it now.” But even if the ninja had been anticipating something like this occurring, the same couldn’t have been said of the poor priestesses who shared his cell. They’d just been in the right place at the right time to get mixed up in all of this. Not that that was Zatoichi’s problem. “But still….” The ninja sighed. “Hey, Sleeping Beauty!” He said in a louder voice, tugging on Kyuubi’s tails. “Up & at ‘em!” He added, nudging Kiyoshi with the tip of his toe. With that Zato settled back to wait for the two women to come around. ~ This will be another intro round. For now just react to your surroundings and the circumstances that brought you there. Please note that all of your belongings have also been taken and we’re locked inside the cell. Escape isn’t possible at this point. |

“I’m Kiyoshi Inoue, I come from Inoue Island’s temple.” The bowed slightly, “I’m pleased to make your acquaintance, sister Tsukimi. I’m guessing you’re not with them? What temple are you from?” Kyuubi smiled. "Nice to meet you sister Inoue, no I am not with them." She shrugged in disinterest of the men. "I am from the Tsukimi Inari Shrine north of Mt. Kazai." She listened to Kiyoshi but a warning came suddenly from the lax clergyman and a spell symbol blossomed on the floor and before she knew it Kyuubi was overtaken by sleepiness and she collapsed forward into Kiyoshi and the world went dark. "Kitsu~..." ~ Kyuubi dreamed of home... the blossoming trees, the wild Huskitsu... she remembered happier times... then suddenly a tug came to her tails and a voice pulled her out of her sleep. “Hey, Sleeping Beauty!” Groggily the miko sat up in what she dimly noticed to be a bunk bed. Yawning and rubbing her eyes she looked around. "Huh? Where am I...?" Suddenly it came back to her. "Gah! What happened?" She leapt off the bed and made a beeline for the door and pounded on the door ineffectually with her fist. "Those priests must have locked us in here! Moons above I hope they didn't come to arrest me for stealing..." She then reached into her robe's many pockets and began to panic. "NOOOO!" She wailed. "My tessen are gone! And so are my shinies! Nonononono..." On the verge of tears, the miko had never actually been imprisoned before having always found one way or another to escape with her freedom intact. She then reached up for her mask and began shivering when she found it to be missing too, though they had left her her tails. "They took my mask..." Reaching up to her neck she blanched upon discovering they had also taken her necklace. "My Hoshi no Tama! I cannot be without it!" She began pounding on the door again. She then turned back to the others, her face pale with a mixture of fury and fear. "They will pay, ALL of them!" Edited by Wizard of Glacia, Apr 20 2015, 03:22 PM.

“Up & at ‘em!” A gruff voice called. Who could that be? Kiyoshi felt a light nudge, and she wrinkled her nose as a damp smell assaulted her nostrils. She opened her eyes slowly, blinking the haze away, and then she gasped. What had happened? The last thing she remembered was being on the ship heading to Ryudo Temple. And then- and then….she’d heard the strange man’s voice, it had scared her, but there hadn’t been much time to marvel about what he sounded like once the Miko who she’d been talking to fell forward, Kiyoshi automatically held her arms out to catch her, and then everything turned black. Her heart raced as she stared from the Miko Kyuubi, who was desperately banging her fists against the door and to the man who’d been with them on the ship. Where was she? The first thing she thought about doing was checking herself for possible wounds, and anything amiss. “This can’t be happening,” she stood up, hands reaching empty air, where her katana had once been strapped to. Her robes and hair pin seemed to be untouched, much to her relief. She’d heard stories about abductions, pirates were barbaric like that, she’d never expected to fall victim to such an outrageous violation of her freedom. She glanced back at her cellmates, checking for wounds on them, everyone’s wellfare came first! “A-are you hurt?” She asked them in a raspy voice, clearly they’d been there for quite a while. She went to inspect the man, circling around him despite her shaking legs. She was scared, but it was hard not to assume her healer role in this situation. “Thank the moons. It seems no one has a concussion,” she let out a shaky breath of relief as she hurried over to the Miko, her hands outstretched as if to comfort her, but the look the Miko had on her face was viciouse and she halted her steps. "Please, calm down.” Kiyoshi said. It was hard, she could barely keep herself standing as it was, but if there was a way out of their predicament they had to remain calm. “Hmm? I’m fine.” Zatoichi answered Kiyoshi warily, a bit unnerved by the way she was circling him. “But you may want to see to the drama queen over there.” He added, jerking his head towards Kyuubi. “I don’t know if she’ll be able to live without her stuff.” After a cursory inspection of their holding cell, Zato turned his attention to his ace in the hole. He smiled beneath his mask when he ran a finger across the lining of his glove and felt the slender rods concealed within. “Yeah, calm down drama queen.” The ninja snorted at Kyuubi as he brushed past her and crouched down next to the cell door. “Your friendly neighborhood shinobi has this situation under control.” With that Zatoichi withdrew the lock picks he carried with him at all times from his glove and set to work opening the door. “I can get you both out of this room. But…er, I hate to admit it but I don’t know what’s waiting outside.” That much was true. Although Zato had his suspicions as to the identities of their abductors, he was operating based solely on a hunch. And Zatoichi wasn’t prone to making decisions without solid facts to base them off of. “But we’ll find out soon enough.” The ninja smirked as a quiet click from the door’s inner workings heralded his victory over the lock. Zatoichi opened the door just a crack and peered out, watching and listening for several seconds. Everything appeared to be silent and still beyond. With a sudden flourish the ninja rose to his feet and pushed the cell door open. “Well now, it was nice meeting you girls, really it was, but….I must be going. Feel free to look around and make yourselves at home. Tata now!” He gushed while backing out of the door. Then, with a casual wave of his hand, Zatoichi trotted off down the hallway outside of the cell. ~ As you exit the cell you can see that you are in a short hallway lined with five other holding cells identical to your own. One end of the hall terminates in a small office containing a desk and a large window, obviously a jailor’s post. At the other end, you can see a stairwell. You catch a fleeting glimpse of Zatoichi heading upstairs but there is also a set of steps leading downward. Where will you go now? ~ You are now free to explore the area and describe your surroundings and experiences as you wish. Background information will be provided in the sign-up thread to give you a better idea of what that will entail. |

Kiyoshi's attempt at comfort calmed Kyuubi a bit but she was still distressed. "I've never been robbed before... and all my things are very important, I must find them." She ceased panicking but continued to fidget, Being separated from her things against her will was almost traumatizing. With quickly strides and deft hands Zato moved past her and unlocked the door to step beyond. “Well now, it was nice meeting you girls, really it was, but….I must be going. Feel free to look around and make yourselves at home. Tata now!” Kyuubi stared as the ninja strode away. "Wait! You are just going to leave us? Damned shinobi..." She then stuck her head out into the hallway, seeing Zato move upstairs as well as the jailer's post. After coming back to the room she looked to Kiyoshi, "What should we do now? We obviously can't count on him for anything... but we could follow him or go elsewhere. That room down there might have our things in it." She pointed in the direction of the office. Kyuubi sniffed at the air and listened to the sound of the jungle coming in through cracks in the walls. "We are someplace humid... with life. This does not smell like Yafutoma." Kyuubi was unwilling to leave the other miko behind and elected to stay near her. |

Kiyoshi's eyes widened when the man unlocked their prison, and as he bid them farewell, she couldn't help the outrage gasped that left her lips as he left them to fend for themselves. This isn't right, we're not supposed to separate! Always stay together if you want to be safe, but safety wasn't enough, Kiyoshi wanted out of this place as soon as possible. Although, she could understand his logic. If it came to saving himself or dying because of a stranger, he would definitely choose the former. At least he'd given them a chance to fight for their freedom, yet this thought wouldn't stop the constant churning in her gut. She didn't have anything of worth with her, she didn't hold any military secrets or precious information, she was just a priestess, who wanted to pursue further skills to hold within her repertoire. As for the other two prisoners, she didn't know, they could´ve been the cause of her kidnapping. Kiyoshi was debating whether she could trust them. Why were they brought here? She turned to Kyuubi who was seething with outrage, hearing out her suggestions carefully. "He'll likely try to shake us off his back if we follow him." Kiyoshi replied in a soft voice, a frown marring her young face. If they were indeed out of Yafutoma, she was in big trouble, she didn't know anywhere else besides her home and the grand city. She quietly walked out of the cell, the hall was ominous looking and the silence was rather terrifying. But, where were the guards? She didn't understand why they would've been left unguarded, but that knowledge wouldn't matter anyway, they had been freed from their cell, and there was no going back now. "We'll have to find out, sister Tsukimi." Her lips tightened into a straight line. "If we run into trouble-" she paused, and glanced at her with uncertainty, "-we'll have each other's back?" she asked, although she knew that it didn't matter what the woman replied, betrayal knew now bounds in the end. As Kiyoshi stepped out into the hallway a face loomed into view behind the barred window of the cell door directly in front of her. “Yeah, I thought I heard someone.” A man’s voice said to someone out of view. Then, in a louder tone, he spoke directly to the miko. “Hey! Oh man, thank the moons you’re not one of those goons. Can you help us?” It’s hard to tell from the man’s facial features but his voice has a distinct Valuan accent. He gazes at you hopefully. But the door to his cell is obviously locked and without Zatoichi around, it can’t be opened without a key. “Yeah, I figured as much. Your friend ran out on you huh? Can’t say as I’d blame him. But still, what a lousy thing to do.” The man sighs. At the sound of the man’s voice, other faces begin to appear from within nearby cells. “What’s going on out there?” Another man, this one sporting a gray beard and a voice thick with a Nasrean accent, asks from the cell next to the one you were occupying only a moment earlier. “Just chatting with the new neighbors.” The Valuan man answers back with a wry grin. “Yafutoman by the look of you. Wow, the Professor really went out of his way to snag you lot.” Seeing the confused looks on your faces the Valuan explains further. “Apparently this place is being run by the guy. I don’t know what he’s a professor of but he’s been…experimenting on us. And no, I don’t know what kind of experiment either. For some reason I just can’t seem to remember what goes on once we’re taken out of these cells.” “None of us can.” The Nasrean chimes in. “Only bits and pieces of it comes back to us in our dreams. Flashing lights, someone speaking in a low voice….” “And that scary face.” The Valuan shudders. “We’ve all had dreams about someone with a white face.” Then, as if to banish the frightful memory, the Valuan changes the subject. “So yeah, where did they capture you? Me and my crew here,” He gestures behind him, indicating that there are more people in his cell. “We’re a salvage team. We were working to dismantle part of the Iron Gate when our ship was boarded by this gang of men in white uniforms. They said they were health inspectors and then….well, next thing I know, here we all were.” “I am a spice merchant.” The Nasrean recounts his own tale. “My group was on its way to Esparanza on a buying trip when we came across another ship flying a distress flag. We stopped to help them and…” He shrugs his shoulders, gesturing at the cell around him. “There were some Ixa’takans here too. But they escaped.” The Valuan continues. “Made a break for it when the goons came for them. I don’t think they made it though. We were told later that this is a small island and that there’s nowhere to go and no way to escape it.” He sighs with a downcast look on his face. “We haven’t seen those guys since then. They’re probably dead.” “But I, for one, would rather risk it than remain here at the mercy of that madman.” The Nasrean huffs. “Please, for the sake of the Red Moon, you must find a way to unlock these cells and release us!” “Better hurry too.” The Valuan agrees. “Don’t know when they’ll return for us. If you’re gone when they do, they’ll search you out and lock you back up again. Or worse…” “There is a jailor’s room at the end of the hall.” The Nasrean suggests. “Perhaps the key to the doors can be found within.” ~ Your captors will return to this area soon. Make haste and begin your exploration of the facility. Search the office if you like but the key to the cells is not inside. The prisoners will remain locked up until much later in the scenario. |
