With activity on the site being at such a low point Daioh and I will be participating in this impromptu Boss Battle to pass the time. As such it's only open to the two of us. If anyone else wishes to participate they need to update any RP threads they're involved with before joining this one.

The rules for this event are as follows:

1. Do not damage the boss beyond its ability to realistically continue the fight. You may inflict injuries upon it from your very first post but given the nature of this particular boss these will not cause it much damage at all. During the battle an event will occur that will signal the moment when it can be killed. Until that point it should be considered invulnerable.

2. As always the boss can god-mod against players at will. Its actions may set up special conditions which will be displayed in bold text within the post. No player may avoid these situations once they are initiated. Solid tactics may allow you to circumnavigate them though.

3. NPCs will be provided for all players to use in whatever way they see fit. Some will be enemies, some will be allies. You are allowed to control these as you would your own character. The captain of the ship is off limits though. Only Bear can write for him.

This event is scheduled for ten posts per participant and a reward of One Moonberry will be awarded to all those who complete it. There is no time limit on posts but prompt replies are expected.

The Boss Battle will begin now...

~

The scorching sun of Nasr hammered down on Maramba's port as sailors and dock workers scurried about beneath its oppressive blanket of heat. Ships moored in the harbor bobbed gently, their sails slack in the still air of midday. Many of the ships didn't even have sails. The blockish hulls of Nasrean vessels rode at anchor next to ships from Mid-Ocean and Esparanza.

The dock workers and sailors who came and went along the piers didn't seem to notice the heat at all. To them it was just another warm day in Nasr. But to one young woman who was making her way towards the end of the docks it was pure hell.

"Stupid @#$&ing Nasreans, having to live in an oven like this." The bounty hunter known as Machine Gun Annie grumbled to herself. "At this rate I'm gonna melt before I even get there."

"There" just happened to be a large trawler berthed at the far end of the docks. Despite all of the activity in port the slips to either side of this ship were left vacant, as if no one wished to dock next to it.

Annie scanned the ship from stem to stern as she drew closer. She had to admit that it was one of the ugliest things she'd ever laid eyes on. The ship's hull was a faded yellow and its sails were the color of mustard. Its deck was broad and flat with a huge crane mounted on its bow.

"Hmph, not much to look at." Annie snorted as she came to stand at the bottom of the ugly yellow ship's boarding ramp. "I hope there's more to it than this."

Annie started up the boarding ramp and came face-to-face with a squat sailor with a chubby face and porcine eyes the moment she reached the deck. "And who be you missy?" The piggish man asked, squinting his eyes to get a better look at her.

"I be here for the job." She answered crisply. Annie withdrew from her pocket a crumpled piece of parchment and shoved it into the man's face. He snatched it from her grasp and scanned it.

The parchment was indeed an offer for work. Many like it had been circulating around the port of Maramba for the past several days. Written upon it was a request for mercenaries who would be participating in a "monster hunt" out at sky aboard a certain ship. The name of the ship and the nature of the monster had not been provided.

Not that Annie really cared about either. All she needed to know was that there was going to be a big fight and there was money to be made from it.

"Ah, ye're here to see the cap'n about the job are ye?" The sailor smiled, revealing several missing teeth. "My name be Corke and I'm the boatswain o' this ship. I'll go and let him know that ye're here."

Corke turned about and headed off across the deck. Annie followed him, noting that many eyes fell upon her as she went. In turn she observed the faces of the crewmen who were going about their daily chores out on the open deck. "Shifty bunch." She muttered. Each one of the men she saw had the hard-edged look of men who lived outside of the law. Annie knew their ilk well, having brought so many to justice in the past.

As she passed beneath the ship's mainmast she glanced up its length. The captain's standard hadn't been raised yet but it wasn't hard for her to imagine seeing a black flag fluttering in the breeze up there.

"Something tells me that this one's going to get a little rough." Annie thought to herself.

(OOC - The event has begun. Use your first post to describe your arrival. The captain will appear in my next post to explain the event.)

''That's odd.'' A tall Nasrean man said as he took several cloaks down from a line where they had been drying in the heat of the scorching sun.
''What is it?'' A woman answered as she leaned out from a nearby window.
''Nothing, could of swore I put more than these out?''

''I guess these will have to do.'' A woman told herself as she walked along the docks.
The long cloaks around her body covered her from head to foot, only her eyes could be seen from behind the cloths.
''This heat is inhuman!'' She started to mutter to herself as she felt the sweat run down the side of her head.

The woman reached into one of the many pockets on the cloak and pulled out a small scrap of paper.
She only looked at it for a moment before putting it away and then looking around at the many ships.
''Well where is it then?'' She once again asked herself, not taking in too much around her as the heat was really starting to bother her now.

''I can't take it!'' She yelled, catching the attention of a few men passing by.
The woman reached for the green blade by her side and with a few quick slashes she rested her arms by her side.
For a second it seemed that she had swung her sword around only in frustration of the heat but just then the long sleeves on her arms tore away from where she had sliced the cloak with her blade.
She now had her arms bare which could still feel the heat yet without the weight of the cloth she felt much better.

The woman raised her sword again and smiled at her reflection in the green blade,
''I just can't resist.'' She grinned as she swung her blade around herself again before returning it to her side.
This time a large part of the cloak fell away around her stomach showing off her belly.
The woman smirked as another bit of cloth fell away from the top of the cloak revealing part of her cleavage.

Her cloak had changed allot within the slashes of her blade, now only hear head was covered along with part of the top of her while her legs where covered by the rest of the cloak which now resembled a long skirt.
She adjusted the belt she wore along with a few other things hidden from sight.

By now she had caught the attention of the men working on the docks which only pleased her.
''Hey.'' Called out one of the men,
''Why not show use your pretty face?''

The woman walked over and moved towards the man's ear,
''I'm far too pretty for your eyes.'' She laughed as she reached into her pocket.
''But maybe you can help me?''

The man took one glance of the paper and gave a quick nod.
''Yeah you want that ship over there.'' He pointed to the far end of the docks.

The woman did not even feel the need to thank the man and made her way towards the large ship.
''Oh my, much better than I thought.'' Her eyes gazed at the crane that sat on the bow of the ship.
''Yes I think this ship will do just fine.''

The woman walked onto the deck and right away most of the attention from the crew moved from their jobs to her.
''Hehe, am I in the right place for a job?'' He teased as she held the paper in her hand, yet her attention was still on the crane.

''You sure are.'' One of the crew men replied to her.
''Corke has just gone to get the captain.''

The woman stood on deck with her hands against her waist as she waited.

Annie watched as the newcomer arrived and nodded politely to her. It seemed that the crewmen had also noticed her and had taken quite an interest in her. It was pretty obvious what they saw in her. The robe she wore was very revealing and the crew liked what they saw.

Corke did not however. "Get back to work you lazy bilge rats!" He cried out. The crewmen ceased their gawking and went back to their chores. Most of them continued to glance at the two women every so often when they thought the boatswain wasn't looking.

"Ahem. Sorry 'bout them. The captain will see you now." Corke said, wringing his hands for a moment before he scurried off to tend to his duties.

With a loud crack the door to the captain's quarters slammed against the wall and an aging fisherman emerged.

thump-click thump-click thump-click thump-click

The sound of the old man's booted foot and peg leg clicked rhythmically against the ship's deck as he stepped forward to look his newest crewmembers over.

"Alrighy ye mangy lot! Stand to and lets have a look at ye!" The Captain growled as he stepped forward to inspect the two women. His gaze raked across their bodies, took in their appearance from top to bottom, as if inspecting a draft animal.

"Hmm, ye'll do I suppose. 'Twas hopin' for a few more to be joinin' us but there aren't many with enough sand in their crawl ta be acceptin' this kind of work these days." He growled, nodding his head in satisfaction. "Permit me to be introducin' meself. Me name is Sturges but most folk on this ship calls me CAPTAIN!"

Annie narrowed her eyes slightly. She recognized the captain's name from the wanted posters that could be found in the Sailor's Guild in Mid-Ocean. Captain Sturges, aka the Mad Fisher, was one of that regions more notorious Black Pirates.

But the last Annie had heard was that he'd moved into North Ocean to escape his constant feuding with Baltor and take over the territory of Gordo the Round who had recently retired. What was he doing in Maramba?

It seemed she was about to find out.

"So then, I suppose ye're all wonderin' why ye are here aye?" Sturges asked as he produced a pipe from his pocket and tamped down a wad of tobacco into its bowl. "Well I'll tell ye." He continued, lighting his pipe before speaking again.

"A few days ago I was contracted by the town o' Maramba to hunt down and eliminate a wee beasty that's been terrorizin' the skies near here. Apparently several o' their trade ships turned up missin' and for once it weren't us pirates what took 'em."

Sturges blew a thin haze of pipe smoke into the air as he turned to stare in the direction of the port. Annie looked over her should to see what he was looking at. It was a large cargo ship that was in the process of being loaded with all manner of goods to be shipped out later in the day.

"Y'see one o' the ships was found driftin' on the winds. Smashed all to Hell but none of the valuable cargo was gone. Only the crew and the food stuffs they was haulin was taken'. The expensive stuff was still there. What's more the ship look like it twas cracked open like a clam, aye?"

Annie looked as if she were listening carefully to what Sturges was saying. But in reality she wasn't paying him much attention at all. Her mind had drifted off into an addled fantasy where she was beating up the ship's crew and setting fire to the captain's peg leg.

"So Maramba cries 'Monster!' and decides to scare the wee bugger off. 'Course their soldiers can't set a huskra afright so they calls good ol' Sturges to do the deed aye? Ain't no finer fisherman in the skies and none tougher, to be sure!"

Annie would have laughed at that last part if she'd been listening. She'd have probably insulted Sturges, words such as "codger" and "gimp" would have been spoken and then her fantasy would have become a reality when the ornery old pirate tried to boot her off the ship.

Fortunately this worst case scenario didn't happen. It wasn't until this point, when Captain Sturges explained what he expected from the two women, that Annie finally started paying attention to him.

"But, for this task methinks I'll be needin' a bit of muscle to set things right aye? And that's where you ladies come in." Sturges explained with a flourish of his pipe's stem. "Ye don't look like the rough-and-tumble sort to me old eyes but ye answered me summons sure enough so I'll wager there's more to ye than a pair of pretty faces, aye?"

Annie caught a whiff of Sturges' pipe smoke and decided to join him. She pulled a cigar from her pocket and lit it up. "Yep, been in a scrape or two in my time." She agreed, exhaling a puff of smoke. "You won't find a better gunner in Arcadia than me. So don't fret gramps. I'll blow your monster out of the sky for ya."

"Hah, ye're a fiesty lass!" Sturges barked with laughter. "I like the cut o' your jib. Don't go dyin' on me and I'll make sure ye get a fine cut o' the pay."

(OOC - The battle will begin in the next round. Converse with the crew and make any preparations you need to. You can acquire weapons and items from the ship's stores if you wish.)

The Woman stood next to the shorter girl as they waited for the captain of the ship to check them over.
The door swung open as the captain came on deck to greet the two.

The man introduced himself as Sturges, yet even before he mentioned his name the cloaked woman had already clocked that he was a Black Pirate.
''Great just my luck....then again.'' Her frown quickly changed to a grin.

The old man started to go on about the task which they would be facing.
She did not have time to have a good look over the sign up sheet, the thing that caught her attention was that it was a ship and thanks to her informer the ship indeed had a crane.
Her attention kept switching between the Captain and the crane, the woman had a few plans of her own but these would have to be put on hold as the captain mentioned the word monster.

It turned out that they where on a mission to rid the skies of a monster that had been attacking ships in the area.
She watched as the ship's current captain spoke but not a single word reached her ears as she had too much planning going on in her mind.
'Looks like I might have to play the waiting game a little on this ship.' She thought to herself.

''I'll wager there's more to ye than a pair of pretty faces, aye?" Sturges finished off with.
The woman grinned as she placed her hand against her sword while placing her other hand against her waist, unknown to the others that under the cloth was her pistol along with a few other items.
''Let's just say I always get the job done.''

Just then Sturges took out his pipe while only seconds late Annie took out a cigar.
The two of them lit up as Annie exhaled while telling them what a great gunner she was.
The smoke made it's was over to the woman's face as she turned away for it for a second before turning to face the two, taking a quick inhale.
She wanted to join the two but did not have any of her own.

Her body wanted to stay but the woman finally got herself to move away slightly from the two.
''You can count on me.'' She waved her hand in the air as if she was attempting to salute.

The woman decided it was time to see just what the crew was like on this ship.
''The fact their already pirates could make my work easy.'' She mumbled to herself as she approached a crew man who was sorting out a old looking create.
''Say there miss, I don't think we caught your name?'' He quickly turned to the woman.

''Er..'' The woman stopped to think, she had not yet thought up a name for herself.
Her eyes darted around the ship in panic as her real name was on the tip of her tounge.
She turned to see the captain and girl she was with both puffing away,
''Pipe....'' She turned back to look at the man, ''Piper...Miss Piper.''

''Well if you need any help Miss Piper just let me know.'' He said as he started to sort out the contents of the crate again.
''Will do..'' The woman turned away as she made her way back over to the young girl again.
''So what brings you here?'' The woman tried to make some small talk with the other new member of the ship.

"Alright lads! Let's get this tub o' movin'!" Sturges bellowed. "We make for the huntin' grounds dead away!"

The crew moved as one to carry out the old man's orders. Men scurried up into the rigging to raise the sails while others bustled about the deck, completing a myriad of other pre-launch tasks. Sturges retreated into the wheelhouse to man the helm. Soon the came a rumbling noise from deep within the bowels of the ship as its engine was powered up.

"So what brings you here?" The oddly dressed woman asked, making polite small talk.

Annie glanced at her and arched an eyebrow. "Er...the job. Ain't that why you're here?"

Annie walked over to the steps that led up to the aft deck and sat down. She tossed the stump of her cigar over the railing and laid her machinegun across her lap. Annie was not a sailor so she didn't know enough about what was going on to lend a hand. Not that she would have anyway. She was here to kill a monster, not help out a bunch of rum-sucking numb-nuts like these guys.

"So, you ever do this sort of thing before?" Annie asked Raven. She decided that the other woman's desire for a little small talk would help to pass the time. "Monster huntin' I mean. Not the shady dealin's, which is what I think about all this. Er, not sayin' you look shady or nothin'. I mean you do but...."

Annie wasn't good at small talk and decided to quit before she offended the female pirate. Instead she ejected the magazine from her machinegun and pretended to inspect it for the next few minutes.

By this time the trawler had left the docks and was making its way out of the port.

~

A few hours later the trawler, a refurbished pirate ship Annie had learned was named the Kingfish, had left Maramba's airspace and was sailing through the shipping lanes where the merchant ships had vanished. The door to the wheelhouse swung open and Sturges came out onto the deck.

"Alright you lot! Keep yer eyes peeled and sing out if'n ya see anythin' that looks out 'o the ordinary!" The grizzled old pirate called out to his crew. Then he turned his attention to the two girls. "This be the beast's territory so keep yer lines tight." He told them in a quieter voice.

"Lines? What lines?" Annie asked, perplexed.

"Figure o' speech girl." Sturges snorted. "Means ta stay ready."

"Oh, I follow. Guess I'll go and prime the cannons then." Annie nodded. She excused herself and then headed downstairs to the gunnery deck.

Sturges turned his eyes upon Raven then. "Hmm, now that I get a good look at ye, I must say that ye seem familiar to me girl. Have we met before, aye?"

It was entirely possible that they had, either from her personal career as captain of the White Raven or as a member of the Tumbleweed's crew. Then again Sturges might have been recalling a night spent in the pleasant company of a harlot who had a similar demeanor to Raven.

"Can't quite place ye though." Sturges stroked his beard in thought. "Or maybe me mind is gettin' a bit addled in me old age."

~

A half an hour later saw the Kingfish sailing just off the coast of an island crested by high walls of sand colored stone. Sturges was at the helm again and the crew was growing increasingly tense. "The cap'n things the beast has a lair built somewhere in those." The crewman from earlier explained to Raven. "It could show up at any moment."

Belowdeck Annie hunched over one of the Kingfish's main guns, a weapon the captain and crew had affectionately dubbed the Mad Cannon. It had been loaded, as had all the others that lined the deck. The gunnery crew stood by with slow-burning fuses, ready to fire at a moment's notice.

"C'mon." Annie hissed as she glared out of the gunport through slitted eyes. "C'mon you mother..."

~

Another tense hour passed like this before the lookout finally called down that he'd spotted something. "Contact off the starboard bow!" He cried. "It's making towards us straightaway!"

"What be it?" Sturges called back as he staggered out onto the deck.

The lookout did not respond immediately. He seemed to be having trouble identifying just what it was he was seeing. "Well! Is it another ship?" Sturges cried up at him anxiously.

"No! It's a....I can't identify it captain!" The lookout answered. "But whatever it is, it's on a collision course with us and moving fast!"

By now everyone on deck could see what it was that was approaching them. It appeared to be a giant cone, eggshell white in color with reddish highlights. As it grew closer the crew could make out spiky outcroppings rising from the surface of the cone and a whirl pattern that spiraled down its length.

"Bloody hell, it means to hull us!" Sturges roared. "Brace ye'selves for impact!"

The huge object bore down on the Kingfish without slowing down. Its sharp tip would smash open the ship's hull with ease if it struck. Anyone who saw what was happening would realize immediately that that's exactly what had happened to the merchant vessels. And this flying behemoth was what had made it happen.

But the Kingfish was no merchant vessel. It was a Black Pirate ship manned by a crew of battle-hardened cutthroats. They had gone up against warships of the Imperial Armada as well as those of their hated rivals, the Blue Rogues. The moment the mysterious creature had appeared to threaten them the crew of the Kingfish had already begun setting up an attack of their own.

"Hard to port!" Sturges bellowed. His helmsman obeyed immediately and the Kingfish turned aside to avoid the oncoming monster. The huge creature passed the ship by, its hard shell scraping down the side of the Kingfish's hull, sending tremors across the deck.

"Starboard guns FIRE!" Sturges called out his second order. Just as the Kingfish swung away from the monster a volley of cannon fire was loosed against it. The heavy iron cannonballs streaked across the divide and struck the monster's shell. Small bits and pieces of it fell away from the impact but even at such close range the cannons seemed to have had little affect.

~

"Hey hey hey, what's going on up here?" Annie ranted as she emerged from below. She'd been on the opposite side of the ship and hadn't even seen the monster, much less taken a pot-shot at it like those lucky sons-of-bitches on the starboard guns.

Annie reached the top deck just as the monster passed beyond the Kingfish's stern. "What the hell are we even shooting....holy sonuva what the @#$& is that?" She broke off, staring in utter shock at what she saw hovering in the sky behind the ship.

The monster appeared to be a shellfish of titanic proportions. The cone-like object they'd all see was its shell, spiral-shaped and spike-studded. Once it had passed the ship by the crew could see that it had been moving backwards before. Now they were face-to-face with the beast.

Extending out from the broad end of the shell was its head. The globes of its two huge eyes were set to either side of an ovular head. Its mouth slit puckered at the front of its face. Trailing down from the lower side of its neck was a fleshy appendage that swished back and forth lazily. This could only have been a flipper that helped to propel the creature's mass through the sky. Finally, reaching out of the shell to either side of its head were a pair of long tentacles, each ending in a broad pad lined with suction cups.

"Guys, seriously. What in the bluest of blue hells is that huge thing?" Annie repeated her previous question. But the more she stared at it the more familiar it looked to her. Suddenly she realized what it reminded her of. "It sorta looks like a giant marocca doesn't it?"

"Aye, that's about the short and skinny o' it." Sturges growled, narrowing his eyes at the creature. "It's called a Nautilus. Not much more than an overgrown marocca really. But....in all me years sailin' these skies, I've never seen one the size o' that one."

~

At the same time that the crew of the Kingfish were taking stock of the Nautilus, the Nautilus was also sizing them up. Its primitive intellect did not factor in the threat an armed pirate ship might pose to it. Nor was it aware that its crew had come here to kill it. All the Nautilus knew was that the smell of fish lingered about the Kingfish's hold and many small creatures could be seen scurrying about atop its deck. And that meant one thing; there was food there. And the Nautilus was hungry.

~

"All hands, prepare for battle!" Sturges called out. It was an unnecessary command though. To a man, the crew of the Kingfish had prepared themselves to fight tooth-and-nail against the huge monster.

A short distance away their challenge was accepted. The Nautilus unleashed a roar that sounded like a steam whistle going off and surged forward. Its tentacles waved in the air as it prepared to grapple the ship and devour its crew.

"Er...the job. Ain't that why you're here?" Annie answered Raven's question which caught her off guards for a moment as she realized what she had just said.
''Yeah sure, the job.'' She quickly replied trying not to give herself away.
The woman had almost forgot that she was here doing a 'job' as her main plan was only known to herself.

As the young girl walked over to the steps for a sit down The woman who was going by the name of Piper looked around the deck.
The crew were running around getting the ship ready.
As she watched she got the sudden urge to yell out at them all, yet she remembered she was not their captain, yet.

"So, you ever do this sort of thing before?" Annie's voice came from behind her.
'Piper' Moved over and stood by the girl,
''All the time.'' She said with a grin across her mouth as she rested her hand against her sword.
"Monster huntin' I mean. Not the shady dealin's, which is what I think about all this. Er, not sayin' you look shady or nothin'.
I mean you do but...." Annie went on, trailing off as if she was worried that her words would be offense to the woman.

'Piper' just turned her head away with a smile,
''Yeah, let's say I hunt monsters.'' She muttered to herself as she gazed at the ship's crane then at the captain.
The woman then turned to face Annie,
''I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Black Pirates can't be trusted.''
A quick wink and Piper made her way across the deck.

~

A short time past and Piper found herself wondering around the deck, close to where Annie was.
Just then The captain made his approach on the two with some words,
"This be the beast's territory so keep yer lines tight."

''Aye, Captain.'' Piper called out, almost in a mocking way.
Annie asked the captain what he was going on about, showing that she was indeed not a pirate.
The girl went off to have a go over the cannons below deck.

Piper watched Annie leave before turning her attention back to Sturges, realizing that he was staring at her now.
He asked if they had met before as she seemed somewhat familiar to him.
''Who? Little old me?'' Raven played dumb, She knew of this Black Pirate so the odds were that he had heard of her too.

"Or maybe me mind is gettin' a bit addled in me old age." Sturges went on as he stroked his beard.
''I have served on ships before but not one as nice as this.'' She moved closer to the captain.
''The name's Rav....Rave, Piper Rave..''

~

Time slowly passed as the ship kept on moving forwards.
"The cap'n things the beast has a lair built somewhere in those." One of the crew members told Raven.
''You know the captain is getting on, could be time for a younger guy to take his place.'' She teased the man,
''Or woman.'' She gave him a wink before going on her way.

Raven was starting to get bored of waiting around, she even started to think there was no monster at all.
Time was getting on and there was no sign of any other ships.
If she was to take this ship she would have to do it soon.

~

An hour went by which was all Raven was willing to wait for.
She made her way casually up to where the Captain was, in charge of his ship.
Raven made her way to his side yet slightly behind him.

Her hand slowly went down the inside of the cloth that covered her left leg, she could feel the cold metal of her pistol as she grasped it in her hand.
She started to slowly pull it out as a smile grew across her face.
"Contact off the starboard bow!" Someone suddenly yelled, causing Raven to quickly let go of her weapon as she raised her hand to point in the direction of the thing.
Both trying to fake she was there to help look for anything odd and to cover up what she was about to do.
''There Captain!'' She called out.

"What be it?" Sturges yelled up to the look out.
No one seemed to know what it was but one fact was clear, whatever it was it was on a fast collision course with the ship.
"Brace ye'selves for impact!" Sturges roared.

Being a Black Pirate ship the crew were ready for the monster as it raced by, scraping the side of the ship's hull.
The cannons fired at the creature but did not seem too effective.

By now Raven had made her way back down to the main deck,
''Stupid beast!'' She yelled out across the skies in the direction of the monster.
She placed her hand against her chin as she took out her hidden pistol with her other hand.
''Looks like a change of plan, for now.'' Raven glanced at her weapon before looking in the direction of the huge monster.

"Hey hey hey, what's going on up here?" Annie asked as she emerged from below deck.
The poor girl did not seem to of noticed what just happened which made Raven almost feel sorry for her.
It seemed to her that Annie was the type to not want to miss out on any gun play.

Sturges told the crew what it was, a Nautilus.
Indeed Raven had heard of such a thing but had never seen one.
"All hands, prepare for battle!" The captain yelled out.
His words were not needed as the crew already were getting ready for the fight.
What was even more not needed was Raven's words,
''You heard the Captain, get to it or it's you who we will feed to the Nautilus!''
It was situations like this that got Raven's blood going which really got her Black Pirate side fired up.

The Nautilus swam lazily forward towards the Kingfish, easily keeping pace with the old trawler. Its tentacles swept out to grip its hull. The Kingfish shuddered as its engine fought against the strength of the creature that was holding it back.

"That's it me boys! Give it what for!" Sturges called out, brandishing his unusual weapon. The sharp tip of his stuffed swordfish lashed down to point in the direction of the Nautilus. The battle cries that went up from the crew in response were a mixture of fear and defiance. Several of the men split off into two groups, each one moving to assail one of the tentacles. Together they began to hack at the thick appendages with a mix of cutlasses, axes and pikes.

"Looks like I get the fun part!" Annie laughed. She hurried to the aft deck and leveled her machinegun at the Nautilus' head and opened fire. A swarm of bullets flew across the divide to bury themselves in the the tough hide of the beast's head. It snorted and twitched its snout in response, as if it had been stung by an annoying insect.

"Huh. It's tougher than it looks." Annie muttered in disappointment. "I guess I need a bigger gun."

~

The Kingfish's crew were having better luck than Annie was. Even though their individual attacks did the Nautilus little harm their collective efforts were enough to get its attention. Together they stabbed and hacked at its tentacles until the beast finally released its grip. Howling in irritation the Nautilus fell back away from the ship.

"Hah, serves ye right ye filthy sod!" Sturges crowed triumphantly. The crew raised a cheer as well, drawing confidence from their minor victory. But the battle was far from over. In fact it was only getting started.

~

The Nautilus drifted back from the Kingfish to hover just out of reach of those annoying creatures who had stung it. The creature was not phased by such a meager attack though. It was merely withdrawing for the moment to rethink its strategy.

A moment later and the Nautilus was prepared to have another go at the Kingfish and its crew. One way or another they were all going to wind up in its gullet.

~

Annie glared across the sky at the Nautilus. She too was rethinking her strategy. If only the damned flying snail would come to the side of the ship where all the cannons were then she'd be able to do some real damage. But for now it was out of the line of fire.

"Stupid...piece of....sonuva..." Annie muttered a string of obscenities aimed at the Nautilus. But her tirade was cut short when the beast began moving closer. "Uh...hey guys! I think it's up to something!" Annie called back to the crew.

At that moment the Nautilus launched its attack. Its mouth yawned open and a huge cloud of black mist roiled out of it, engulfing the Kingfish and plunging its deck into total darkness.

"Argh, ye cursed ink-spewin' bastard!" Sturges growled from the murk.

"No good bottom-feedin' sack of @#$&!" Annie screamed from somewhere in the darkness.

If foul language was enough to harm the Nautilus then it would have been knocking on death's door right then. But to actually kill it would call for sterner stuff than a potty mouth. The enveloping cloud of inky mist was preventing anyone from taking action though. If the crew started swinging their weapons about blindly they'd be more of a threat to each other than the monster was.

"Yeeeeaaaagh!" A scream erupted from somewhere in the vicinity of the bow. It seemed that one of the men had been plucked from the deck by the Nautilus.

Unless something was done to restore visibility the crew would be picked off one by one until no one was left to defend the ship.

(The deck has been covered in black mist, reducing visibility to zero. Attacks for this round will have little or no accuracy.)

Raven rushed to the side of the ship were one of the tentacles was already being hacked at by a group of men.
She took a hold of her sword, the blade which was made from green Moon Stone shone as it caught the light.
Joining in she started to lash out at the monster's tentacle with the others, making the creature pay for messing up her plans of taking the ship.

Just then the sound of gun fire grabbed Raven's attention, turning her head she saw that Annie was unloading bullets into the Nautilus' head.
It was clear the shots did not do much damage but it gave Raven an Idea as she looked at the eyes of the monster.
She ran over to the main post and started to climb the ropes, her sights where set on getting as high up as she could.

In little to no time she made it to the top where she balanced herself in front of the best.
''Like what you see?'' She teased the monster as she took out her pistol and aimed the best she could at the Nautilus' eye.
She was not known for her marksmanship when it came to fire arms but there was no way she was going to get close enough to stab it with her sword.

Before she could pull the trigger the monster let out a roar as it let go of the ship.
The crew cheered over the small victory but they all knew it was far from over.
''Great, now I'm up here for nothing.'' Raven muttered to herself now that her target had been lost.

She looked down and tried to figure out a quick way back down to the deck.
Even at such height she could of swore that she could hear Annie cursing the monster.

Just then the Nautilus' started moving towards the ship again, Raven ditched her plan of getting back on deck and took aim with her pistol once more.
''Back for more are we?'' She mocked as the monster approached.
Before Raven could pull the trigger again she got a shock as the Nautilus opened it's mouth exhaling a could of darkness over the ship.

In the darkness of the cloud Raven could hear a scream from one of the crew members and saw what looked like the monster's tentacle in the shadows.
''Bugger, I need to get down from here!'' Raven told herself as the sound of the monster started to move closer.
Trying to slide down the rope Raven found herself almost falling as she caught the cloak she wore around another rope.
''No question about it, the disguise has to go!''

The Black Pirate swung her cloak off from her body flinging it into the air where it disappeared into the darkness.
She tore away at the cloth wrapped around her and let her hidden dress lower across her body.
Raven then took a hold of two close by ropes that where attached to the main sail.
Swinging them over the mast as she ted them each around her wrists she used them to bungee from the top of the poll.
As she descended in the dark cloud the ropes pulled on the sail causing it to retract upwards pulling on the sail and causing tension in the ropes.
The second her boots touched what she presumed to be the deck she let go of the ropes which caused them to fling back up, making the sail burst back into place which sent a slight wind blowing around the area.
The dark cloud around only the middle of the ship where Raven landed ever so slightly cleared, just enough to make out what was around.

Raven took her hat from the back of her belt and placed her hand inside, pulling out a small purple mask which she then placed on her face as she spun the hat around, placing it on her head.
''Got you!'' She said with a grin as she pulled out her pistol, from the corner of her eye she could make out one of the beast's tentacles.
She fired her gun at the silhouetted monster, knowing that after seeing Annie's attempts that it would not do much if it hit yet firing her gun at the monster was pleasing to her even if it was ineffective.

''Find away to clear the mist you worthless pirates!'' Raven yelled at the darkness.
With her disguise gone there was no hiding her Black Pirate side.
No longer was this a mission to steal a ship but now a mission to survive.

(OOC - This round marks the halfway point in the event.)

Sturges was already working to clear the black mist from the deck. "Helm! 20 degrees topside!" He cried out through the murk. His orders were heard in the wheelhouse and the helmsman pulled back on the lever that worked the trawler's ailerons.

In response the Kingfish began to ascend at a gentle angle. The black mist receded as the ship rose out of it. The crew gathered at the starboard railing and peered down at the Nautilus. The huge creature was now drifting along just below them.

"Go and fetch some powder kegs!" Sturges ordered. "We'll crack that thing's shell open like a piss clam!"

~

While a few of the crewmen ran to fetch the explosives Sturges had requested Annie joined the rest at the railing. Slung over her shoulder was a heavy-looking harpoon gun. "Make way, one side! The hot @#$& is comin' through!" She shouldered her way through the group and planted her foot atop the rail. The rest of the crew gaped at her in astonishment. Even the Captain regarded her as if she were mad.

"Are ye daft girl?" Sturges gasped. "What do ye plan to do with that thing?"

Annie gave him a funny look. "I'm going to knit him a nice sweater. What the hell do you think I'm going to do with it?" She shrieked. Then a malevolent smirk stretched Annie's lips as she lowered the huge weapon and took aim.

"Welcome to eternity baby!" Annie laughed. And then she pulled the trigger.

~

What happened next was still surprising despite being totally predictable. Annie leapt up onto the railing to get a better shot at the Nautilus. From this precarious perch she took aim at the huge beast and snaked her finger towards the harpoon gun's trigger. But as she lowered the weapon's heavy barrel to line the beast up in its sights its weight caused her to lose her balance and Annie toppled overboard.

"Oh SHI~ WHHHOOOOOAAA!" Annie screamed, flipping end over end as she fell. On pure reflex her finger squeezed the harpoon gun's trigger. Luckily the weapon was pointing upward at that moment and the harpoon shot out over the Kingfish's deck to embed itself in the mainmast. Its tow cable played out as Annie continued to fall. When at last it reached its end Annie was snapped to a halt and left to dangle beneath the ship.

"Oh....whoa, geez. Man that was close." Annie fought to catch her breath and slow her racing heart after her harrowing plunge towards Deep Sky. With the empty sky spreading out beneath her and the Kingfish a looming shadow above all Annie could do at that moment was hold onto the tow line for all that she was worth.

And that's when she remembered the Nautilus.

"Oh, there you are. Big ugly mother..." Annie muttered upon sighting the creature. The Nautilus was still drifting along on its original heading. But now she was much closer to it than anyone else. The bulk of its shell was only a short distance away with only twelve feet or so of open air between it and Annie.

Annie smiled with reckless abandon as a plan began to form in her mind. She began kicking her legs until her body was swinging back and forth like a pendulum. Gauging the distance Annie kept swinging until her momentum brought her close enough to the Nautilus.

And then she let go of the rope.

~

"By Davey Jones' bristling beard, that girl is insane!" Sturges laughed as he beheld Annie's reckless stunt. Coming from a pirate known as the Mad Fisher, that was saying something.

Just then the crewmen returned carrying a half dozen small wooden casks. "We brought the powder kegs cap'n!" One of them announced.

"About time! A'ight you dogs! Touch fire to fuse an' toss 'em o'erboard!" Sturges ordered, taking one of the explosives for himself.

The powder kegs were handed out but the crewmen hesitated in following their captain's orders. "Sir, what about the girl?" One of them asked. "She'll be caught in the explosions."

"Oh posh and nonsense! That wench has the luck o' the angels!" Sturges countered. He lit the fuse of his keg and tossed it down towards the Nautilus. "She won't die from somethin' such as this!"

With a shrug the crewman repeated Sturges' actions and sent another keg over the railing. One by one the others followed suit.

~

For a brief, heart-stopping moment Annie hung in midair with nothing beneath her feet. In the next moment she landed atop the Nautilus. As she touched down the palms of Annie's hands brushed against the creature's hard shell. Its texture reminded her of clay pottery.

Standing up Annie took a look around. Aside from the spiny growths that rose from the Nautilus' shell there wasn't much to see. "M'kay, I'm here. Uh...now what?" Annie sighed. She had to admit that she hadn't thought this far ahead. "Maybe I should have just climbed back up the rope."

At that moment something fell from above and hit the Nautilus' shell. A second later and it exploded. Annie threw herself to the ground and instinctively scuttled away from the blast. In rapid succession two more explosions went off, each closer than the last.

Annie scrambled to her feet and started running. She chanced a quick look upward towards the Kingfish, knowing that it was the source of the explosions. "What the bloody blazes are you jack-a-ninnies doing up there?" Annie screamed indignantly. "You tryin' to kill me or something?"

Raven looked around as it seemed her words were not heard by any of the ship's crew.
''Worthless lot.'' She narrowed her eyes at the darkness.
Just then she ship started to change direction, shacking off the dark mist.

As the mist moved away she caught sight of a life boat.
''Time for my exit.'' She cheerfully told herself as she walked across the deck.
There seemed to be some commotion going on as it seemed the other girl who had joined the crew was attempting to attack the monster by herself.
Raven took advantage of the fact no one had seen her and decided it was time to leave the party.

As she was just about to jump into the life boat she took a second to look around,
''Just a moment.'' She told herself as she turned her head one way then the other.
''Where are we?''

Raven could not see anything in the distance that she recognized,
''I could be out here for days not knowing if I'm going in the right direction.''
The Black Pirate then turned around to see that the huge beast was still moving along side the ship.
''Ah, I almost for about you.'' She muttered to herself, not liking the chance that the beast could follow after her.

Raven thought it would be best to stay on the ship and help out with the Nautilus after all.
She was just about to move over to the crew when a scream shot out across deck.
Raven looked up but could only see the crew and their current captain.

It seemed as if the girl had gone overboard.
''Well she died doing what she loved I guess.'' Raven shrugged, She was a Black Pirate after all.
No sooner as she told herself this she heard the voice of Annie, it turned out she had caught the rope from the weapon she was using and was now swinging from the ship.
''Lucky devil.'' Raven grinned.

The Black Pirate then go an idea, she looked to the life boat then to the way below deck.
Still not a single crew member had seemed to of noticed her and so she made her way below deck to locate the crew quarters.
Soon she found what she was after, a few items of clothing and a couple of mops.

Raven made her way back on deck and across to the life boat.
The sound of a sudden explosion caused her to drop the items into the small boat.
''What in the name off..'' She turned to see the crew tossing explosive barrels over the side of the ship.

A smirk appeared on her face as this added another twist to her plan.
She took a few of the barrels from nearby and placed them in the life boat using the mops and cloths to dress them up as crew members.
A quick slash of her sword and the life boat was free.

The small boat started to slowly sail towards the Nautilus as the crew were still attacking it with explosives.
Raven made her way to the side of the ship where the crew were and took out her pistol, aiming it at the small boat.
''Come on, get your dinner.'' She teased the beast as she hoped the Nautilus would attempt to eat the small life boat.
She was confident in her plan but that all changed when she caught sight of Annie, who was now for reasons she did not know was on the shell of the monster.
